New clam question
I have a 350g 34" tall reef. Lighting consistes of 3-400W MH 10,000k and an Icecap 660 (actinics). Will this be enough light to sustain clams on the bottom (4"inch sanbed)? If not, what if I added my old 2-175W? Please let me know. Thanks.

Oh and my lights sit 24" off of the surface of the water. So the lights are approximately4 1/2 feet from the clams.

Can nobody really give me any advice here? I am going to install 2 96 watt Actinic PC's as well as my two 175MH 10,000k bulbs. If that doesn't do it, nothing will. Clams seem to be doing alright, but I guess you cannot have too much light on a reef, huh? I think I may need to get a chiller though.

Well, I think it would probably be sufficient for clams on the sandbed, like derasas and squamosas. For Maximas and Croceas, I would put them up in the rocks.
Ideally I think the lights should be closer to the water surface, like 8-10 in. That's just IMHO.... Jamie |

Just curious . Why are your lights so high off the water?

The canopy is suspended from the ceiling and I wanted to give myself room to aquascape abd frag and place corals and critters. I may choose to lower it a foot in a few months after I am through (yeah right we're never through) stocking the tank.

A quote from Daniel Knop's book, Giant Clams, Chapter 6. Keeping Clams in the Aquarium, subsection Illumination (p. 131)...
I recommend metal halide "TS" lamps of 250 Watt (Osram TS 250W/D) and tube shaped lamps with the socket E 27 or E40 (Osram T 250W/D)...250 Watt are used for tanks 60cm high, 400 Watt with tanks of 80 cm, and 1000 Watt with tanks of 100 cm water column. HTH

Ordered the book and just got it. Can't wait to read it. Since my last post I have added 2 -175w MH and 2-96PC (03). So I think (and hope) that 3-400W 10,000k MH, 2-175W 14,000k, Icecap 660 (Actinic) and 2-96w Power Compact (actinic) should be enough light. All three of my clams seem happy. I have a 2" Squamosa, a 4" Ultra Blue Maxima and a 5 1/2" Blue/Green Crocea. I will keep everyone posted over the next few weeks to let you guys know how they do for the long haul. Thanks for the help.
