Mantis tank doubling as fish QT tank?

I have my O. scyllarus in a 38 gal eclipse tank. I'm wanting to get 2 swallowtail angels and was wondering if I could QT them with the mantis. I was thinking that I could build an eggcrate shelf that spans the length/width of the tank, giving the mantis a good 8" or so of vertical water under it, and place plenty of LR on the shelf so that the mantis and fish don't see/stress each other. Obviously, this set-up won't work if the fish needs medicating, but since it's never had fish in it before and likely won't again, I thought it was an alternative to just dumping new fish straight into my display tank. I liked the idea of having a well-cycled tank with some LR in it to QT the fish.

Good or bad idea?

Well they hunt fish but the eggcrate should work. I would try it with something cheap first though.

Eggcrate is good will let the maximum water flow through it, I used it as a divider vertically from the bottom of the tank to the top using sand and LR to stabilize it.
