Length of retro kit
Would a 36 inch retro kit work for a 55 gal if it's centered or would there be shadows on the sides? It would be a Tek T5 kit.

You could stagger the bulbs.
Why not just buy a 54 watt kit? |

54 watt is less then 45 inches. stay with 54 watts

Actually, A 54 watt T5 measures 46.5 inches. With the endcaps, it's under 48 so it easily fits inside a 4 foot canopy.
