Easy water test question

When testing ammonia with a dye test kit, is it normal if the test results in a cloudy, opaque, yellow?

Here is the reason I ask a seemingly ridiculous question. My son's tank recently had a run-away heater. Temp. went 90+.javascript:smilie('')
eek We knew something was wrong when half the fish, snails, and shrimp died. Since my son, he's 11, usually test the water I don't remember is that cloudiness is normal. My fresh water tests are always clear yellow.

Any tips on how to get our tank back in shape?

sounds like aquarium pharmaceuticals, not the best or most reliable but .... i have used them for ammonia and nitrite basically for ease of use (and cheaper for multiple testing). and yes my ammonia test went cloudy when i added the first chemical to the sample.

Try Salifert test kits. I've had my best luck with those.
