I want to work on this tomorrow, but so far no help.

can anyone offer any suggestions? trial and error could lead to too many errors, this is a first for me...

I don't really understand your question, are you looking for a specific pump? If so, then check this chart out http://www.marinedepot.com/aquarium_...me.asp?CartId=

This will point out the flow rate vs pumping height (one where on the bottom of the number says shut-off).
