allergic reaction
Just a quick reminder regarding the dangers of our hobby. I accidentally stuck myself with my black sea urchin and had an immediate alergic reaction. my thumb became very painful and turned reddish purple. I immediately soaked in hot water and made sure the spines were removed. I also took benadryl which was a big. help. after further research I placed myself on levaquin and medrol dose pack. the thumb is better.
I do not wear gloves as I am deathly allergic to latex. too bad there is no real good substitute for those long reefkeeping gloves. remember to protect yourself

Yeah, I stuck myself quite a few times on my diadema. It doesn't feel good, but I had no ill effects.
Why use antibiotics proactively in this sort of case?

Because of the broken skin and potential toxins and bacteria in the water. I researched and this is what is recommended. The steroids are only because I have systemic reactions to things and was short of breath and tight in the chest.
