DI Only

How many people are using a De-ionizer only, I heard that the purity that a de-ionizer produces is higher that RO but that you have to replace the de-ionizer cartridge often.

I am not sure but as the most expensive media on an RO/DI I sure wouldn't want to replace the media after one water change. Not really sure how only DI works but.......'

I wouldnt do it. Sounds to be very expensive in the long run.

I doubt DI alone would be "better" than ro. Its just a pellet, it doesnt actually filter anything out. It pulls stuff out from what I understand.

Anyways if it were better than RO why would everbody have RO/DI filters.

If they sold 10 times more media it would get cheaper so cost isn't the issue.

It will be extrememly expensive to go that route. The DI will strip out everything, but doesn't have near the capacity for filtering as a RO with the appropriate filters. That's why people use the RO to strip out most of the impurities and the DI to catch the rest.

Much more cost effective that way.

I only have to do to-up on my 65g with purified water as I onlu use NSW for water changes, so I will not be using that much water.

Before I knew better I bought one of those stand along DI filters. If I recall correctly it was about $30. It did a great job of giving me pure water all the way to 10 gallons! By 15 gallons it was completely worthless. Even an inexpesive RO filter before the DI will make it last many many many times longer.

Thats still a total waste of money and you would be ahead in the long run by just getting a decent RO/DI unit. You can get a 110g per day, 6 stage unit from filterdirect on ebay for $115. You can get them even cheaper if you don't want the faucet and storage tank.

You can get a really nice RO for 130 at the following website. They are reliable, quality, and not ebay.

www.air water ice.com (without the spaces)

That's what I have but the unit is certainly not cheap. There were a number of threads regarding these units (like we have) vs the ebay ones a while ago and they both are capable of 0 tds water and seem to produce for approximately the same time. I personally like having high quality items but it seems the ebay ones will get the job done without a problem.

Don't knock the filterdirect units on ebay. There is nothing cheaply made about them and are as high of quality as the more expensive units out there. I was able to go for over a year before my TDS started to go up to a number I didn't like (4). Thats with doing 2 gallon per day top offs and 15 gallon per week water changes. TDS going in is around 180, TDS from RO is 4 and TDS from DI is 0.

Perhaps you should re-read my post. I was saying that the ebay unit produces just as well as the others.

Wait a minute isn't ebay a stamp for quality

Filterdirect has been around for a minute but with ebay stores you never know. One day they just go poof.
