I was just thinking that the problems may have something to do with the calcium additives that are used in a lot of peoples tanks. I used to have a PH problem and I would add buffer into the sump. My rio 3100 was in the sump and the buffer was sucked right into it. I only use buffer now in newly prepared water for water changes and no longer use it in the display tank. I may be insane, but yes I have continued to use Rio pumps because they fit into my sump properly and have the flow rate I need. I have not had a problem in over a year and a half (since I stopped puting buffer in the tank). Could this have something to do with it?

I have a Rio 3100 going for 4 years as return pump on my 90g without problems. On my turboflotor skimmer, I go through a Rio 2500 every year or even 8 mos -- they don't last in that "free-spinning" role, I guess they like to get a little head pressure.

My 3100 was smoking in my sump,I got home just in time the room was filled with smoke. When i inspected it water was getting in where the power cord goes into the pump and was shorting it out...I'll stick with Danner mag drive pumps

Came home tonight to find all of my tanks pumps and lights shut off. The 20Amp main breaker had tripped. On investigation, it turned out that the Rio 2100 running my Turboflotor protein skimmer had failed. It ran fine for about 5 years, then one night poof. I opened the back cover, and the epoxy is cracked and the thing smells like an electrical fire. I just hope my tank remains OK.
I don't think anything but a Rio will work on my skimmer, so I guess I need a new skimmer (not a new Rio!!!) |

I've lost two Rio's. One ran fine for several years, then I was using it to mixup some saltwater, it quit running, and suddenly there was an oil slick on the new water. The other one died a few days later doing the same thing!!!!
Fortunately they weren't in my tank yet.

1 rio 2100 running without a cleaning in sump for 12 years!!!!
1 rio 2100 running 6 months in refugium (for chiller) has ceased once, never starts without help, and is noisy even with second impeller. 1 rio 1100 POS! second impeller did not stop the vibration and noise! Has not stopped moving water and I use it in a garbage can to mix seawater. Final score Rio 1 out of 3 worked Others I utilize(d): Power sweep/stuck 3 for 3 maxijets 4 for 4 Aquaclear 802,402,302 3 for3 Penguin 2 for 2 (15 years! never cleaned!)

So far I've lost 2 2100s and 2 2500s. Both 2100s and 1 of the 2500s just quit one day. The last 2500 shocked the heck out of me.

What causes them to meltdown and heat the water. I have (1)2500, (1) 800, (1) 600 but never had any problems. I give them an occassional cleaning but now yall have me nervous!!

Rios that have died 6 out of 8 (the last two I'm using in places I can afford a meltdown)
Sen are junk two, I lost 2-3 of them. The shafts expand and seize. IMO, just about any submersible, strong pump is of poor quality. The Eheim submersibles are very reliable, but very expensive, and quite weak. |

0 out of 8 Rios
5 out of 5 Little Giants 6 out of 9 Beckett 1 out of 7 Lagunas Admittably my rios get very little usage as they are utilized for water changes, fluidized bed filters (rise of 5 inches), and general water movement. I used a rio for my wet'dry trickle filter and switched it out for a pond pump for more umph on the rise. I have only listed the brand pumps a salt keeper might use. I utilize others for ponds. Koi
