Thanks. I have certainly learned a lot from this and am feeling more confident in my skills of reefkeeping.

Thanks. I checked out your thread you posted; what a cool idea on a DIY zero edge tank. can't wait to see more. Did you decide on a tank size that you are going to use or will it be a custom built tank?

Working with pretty much the same dimensions as you the 60g tank is 30.25X18.5X25.5 and fits the "beer" cooler base perfectly leaving 2" to 2.5" of space. When I get brave I am going to drain the water some and remove the brace and trim. I scaped it with some fully cured live rock last night still waiting for the aragonite milk to completly clear and I will takes some pics.

that's a really creative idea.....where did you get the beer cooler base from?

I stole it from 7-11! LOL just kidding, I found it at the dump, at first I wasn't sure what I was going to do with it. Then I had a dream and woke up and did what you see. Will see how it works out long term. But being the base is NSF certified I am pretty sure it will do well long term.sd

yeah I love the idea....very creative and interesting. I always appreciate when people come up with their own DIY project and save some money vs. buying outright.

Ok will do, just added 20 more lbs of live rock. Going to be looking at upgrading the light in no hurry as the current lighting is good enough for this stage. I'm partial to all three linds of lights as I like T5, LEDs and metal halides. But if I just had to pick one type of light I would have to go for metal halide as they most naturally mimic the natural sun.

I never had metal halides or LED's but have great success with T5's. I have seen MH and LED in person on friend's tanks and love LED's over everything I have seen. Colors are amazing and cost effective in the long run when looking at KW usage and lifespan. Think I will go LED at some point as well as soon as they come down more in pricing.

So in learning to diversify my food options for my fish and coral I was wondering what people thought of or what your experiences were with live mysis shrimp. Let me first say that I have never feed my tank before with them nor do I even know what eats them so the purpose of this topic is to learn what I can about them and if they are suitable for my tank needs. So let me take the time to describe my tank.

56 column, mixed reef with lps, sps, zoas, and softies (meat eaters I believe are my acans, candy canes, yuma and ricordia, favias, hammers, torch)
fish are anthia, yellow tang, blue/green chromis, orange strip cardinal, two tank raised clowns.

I was thinking if I could get a small colony of live mysis shrimp growing in my HOB refugium, then I could feed my tank periodically with them (again assuming they are appropriate for my broodstock and fish).

Please feel free to put your thoughts and experiences out there since this is new to me.

Link to purchasing them http://www.aquaculturestore.com/swinverts.html

So the mysis shrimp are still in my refugium and loving it. I had to turn my attention recently to high nutrient levels which I believe are from RO/DI storage tank. (TDS 61). This started when I noticed poor polyp extension in my tank and slowed growth. I took it outside and cleaned it well with vinegar and I am back in business. Guess I should do this monthly since my RO/DI storage tank does not have a lid. Getting ready to upgrade my skimmer and replace my bulbs soon.

So I continue to have mysis shrimp living in my refugium. Now I have to figure out how they can find their way into my display tank as food for my fish. They are too fast to try to catch. Last month I had a mini cycle going on in my tank due to the hurricane that knocked out my power for several days. Things seem to be on the mend however I did loose most of my sps. Got new T5 bulbs (ati) and the color is great. I also got a SWC 160 cone skimmer 2 days ago. This thing is awesome and is skimming so much out of my water right out of the box. I will let it break in over the next several days then dial it in for good.

So it's been awhile since I have posted. I have been busy trying to be patient during another tank episode. Lost all of my sps corals a month ago due to algae bloom that could have been prevented. I decided to put a piece of what I thought was cured rock in my sump to help out a friend only to cause a major tank bloom. I am now considering creating a algae turf scrubber as I am getting tired of all the maintenance and don't really see the benefits in my tank from GFO and Carbon reactor. I believe in the less is more philosophy and I like the idea of letting nature do the work along with trying to create a ecosystem. I have done a lot of reading on ATS and think I will try it. Does anyone have any feedback for me on this? Would love to see your ATS setups.

I've never been a fan of carbon and I believe in the "Berlin Method" of reef keeping. (Water changes, live rock and feeding the tank.) But i also believe in over skimming.

Sorry you lost your SPS. I've just as six months ago added some Green Slimmer and Pink birds nest and have some decent growth out of both of them.

Did you notice a difference in your tank after adding the sump?

How did you make that sump?! I've been wanting a sump for quite some time now, but didn't have the means to do it. I see that you took your shelf out of your stand (assuming you have the same stand as mine), I was considering doing the same to mine, but thought it would ruin the integrity of the stand (I was also a bit scared for my life, having a 56g tank right above my head while attempting to dismantle my stand... lol).

Well first off, dismantling a stand with tank over head would be BAD.LOL. But seriously, when i was building the tank, i took out the shelf and cut some 2 x4's for support. I screwed and glued them with gorilla wood glue to the stand's plywood pieces from the inside, so the screw heads wouldn't show from the out side. Like this:
IMAG0140.jpg
and here you can see where i pulled the shelf out:
IMAG0141.jpg

I did this to each corner of the stand and around the top. It made the stand very strong.
