I would never want to live with a er skimmer that was sitting in water that constantly changed levels - you can not tune it correctly - you gotta fix this

I too, was that excited when the fed-ex man delivered my skimmer. The 2 days before it was delivered I must have looked at that tracking page 10 times an hour...no lie.

it can be higher than that but it will affect performance. if you don't want to affect performance and want to keep a higher water level in your sump, maybe you can make eggcreate or pvc stand for the skimmer to sit on top of.

Could someoone explain why deeper water level in the sump efffects skimmer performance.

I'll try to give it shot.
Imagine this say you have an air pump. That air pump has a maximum amount of air it can pump. Now say we attach an airline hose to the pump. The moment we do so the amount of air being delivered at the end of airline is reduced compared to the amount of air the pump would produce with out the airline because of the friction between the air and the inside of the airline. The amount that is reduced is a very small fraction though. We all know that as we go deeper into a body of water the pressure increases right. So when we stick the airline into a body of water the amount of air coming out of the airline is reduced. As we bring the end of the airline deeper into the body of water, the amount of air coming out the end of the airline becomes less and less. This happens because the air pump can only produce so much push (pressure) to overcome the pressure present at the end of the airline. Eventually if you go deep enough the air pump will no longer be able to overcome the water pressure and air will stop coming out of the airline altogether. Now if we replace the air pump which pushes air, with a venturi that sucks in air the same principle is at work. The venturi can only suck in so much air with a certain amount of water flow going through it. As we submerge the venturi deeper into the water it can suck less and less air. I hope this helped and didn't confuse. |

I'm putting together a list of equipment for my new tank (62g) and was originally going to go with a ASM skimmer. I've found a new CS5-3 that's within my price range and cheaper than the ASM. The CS5-3 is rated for 90g, so I think I'll be fine with 62g main and 20g sump. If you see a problem with this skimmer on my system please let me know.

I joined the ER club. I purchased a cs8-2. Looks like the newer pump because I dont see sedra on it. Enclosed with the skimmer is a tube of lube. Does this get put around the gasket o ring? I was fitting the collection cup on the base, turned it in place only to find that I was not able to remove it unless I use lots of force. Does the lube make it east to turn? It's real hard to get the collection cup off for cleaning. I am going to install the skimmer this weekend. Any tips would be appreciated. Thanks

steve- i have put vasoline around the threads of my union and on the o-ring. this helps it screw and unscrew easier and it seals better on the o-ring.
you sure you didn't overtighten the union too much and that is why it takes too much force to undo it?? Lunchubucket

Hi everyone,
Well put me in the club too ![]() I just picked up a 180g system and I now have a CS8-5 Eurreef skimmer. The skimmer is working great, just had to put a 100 micron filter bag on it to get rid of all the extra bubbles ![]() Steve |

so what is the deal with the new beta pumps? I know they are supposed to inject more air and all that, but when are they going to be available?

i got a brand new cs5-2 for my 10g acro tank,
how's that for oversized? anyway, it's been about 5 days now scince i dropped it in my sump and still no foam. it almost looks like it's working in fresh water or something. so much so that it made me check my salinity(1.022), i even did a partial water change and increased salinity to 1.025, just to be safe. i also took it out and gave it a hot water bath , but it's been 2 days scince then. also, i noticed that when i first put it in the sump it actually was overflowing it was foaming so much, but then it stopped. i put in a bag of of chemi-pure in the sump, could that have stopped foam production? i bought an es5-2 a while ago and it was foaming in a matter of hours, even with chemi-pure in the sump. am i missing something?? |

whenever i add something to the tank, ANYTHING, the skimmer goes nuts or foam production stops. why dont you take the chemi pure out and let it go for a day. Also, keep you hands out of the water as that will decrease foam production.

thanks for the reply, i did in fact take out the chemi-pure when i gave the skimmer it's bath, so i'll just have to wait.
btw, how would i know if i received one of the newer pumps with my euroreef? it does have one of the new quick disconnects on the neck instead of the union, and the pump doent say sedra or dolphin on it, it just has a number on a sticker with a euroreef logo on it, thats it. it looks pretty much the same. it does seem like theres an extra vinyl washer on the impeller. i also took the elbow off of the pump output and plugged it straight into the body, i heard you can get as much as 25% increase in efficency that way. |
