Silicates can also come from tapwater/RO-water.

A regular RO/DI doesnt get rid of it, you can buy a separate silicatefilter that you plug onto your RO/DI unit to remove it from the RO water.

Im sorry for my bad english/explanation.. 2nd language to me.

Thanks...actually there has been a water shortage throughout town these days, and they have been sending in extra water trucks to fill all individual tanks, maybe the water was bad. In usual times there is no need for Ro/Di units here as the water is desalinated sea water, my friend (marine biologist) has had it tested or something, and was telling me that it is fine. Explanation as clear, thanks.

So should i just conduct a water change....sand bed.....

Well it has been a horrible week so far fighting what seems to be a losing battle against hair algae. Thanks to Randy Holmes (hope it's correctly spelled) forum, I raised the pH with kalkwasser (turned off the calcium reactor) over the last couple of days, did a 120 Liter water change (was about time), siphoned the detritus off the sand bed, added mechanical filtration and reduced the lighting period. This was over the course of the last two days and it seems to have considerably subsided. I will maintain a higher pH for a couple more days and slowly increase the photo preiod until back to normal.

But it has been a while since I posted some pictures, I had to rescape the tank, actually couldn't get it back to how it was before the cleanup, and have a few new pieces since my last photo post.

I really like the coloration on this echinopora, light blue with very vibrant red.

white sinularia with dark brown polyps.

Some pulsing Xenia, not in great shape though

Caught this right after taking the last shot, tang vs. shrimp, the tang quickly left the area.

Since the dinoflagellate problems the zoanthids closed up and have not reopened, hopefully with the water changes and everything they may reopen.

And last of all a full tank shot, on the right i have a new toadstool leather ...massive, although its closed up in the shot.

This is the day after the water change, siphoning and cleaning of the sand bed. Water was still quite cloudy...
Lighting period is still at 2 hours only for the MH and ten hours for the actinics. Today I will up the MH to 3 hours and get it back to 8 hours over the next week.

Here are some new pictures of the tank...nothing much different.

My trusty mushrooms that have been with me for a year now, rock is completely covered, although growth in the new tank has been slower then in the 55G.

My Blue mushrooms, started with one and now have 6-7 that have spread out throughout the tank

My Blue Maxima, started as a tiny 1 1/2 inch baby and us now around 3 1/2 inches.

I go this around three weeks ago i think and its doing quite well.

And my favorite one right now, leather?

Well its been a while, personal problems have sidelined my interest in my tank but it was getting a bit swampy, so I decided that I should fix things up. I'll be going to France shortly so I'll be able to replenish my stock of Prodibio and need to replace my pH probe also, calcium reactor has been off for a while so its back to manual dosing. I have been diving and got some really nice pics and footage which i will also post.

When I meant nice, it was refering to the content, my poor digital cam is not really great when it comes to taking pics at 25m deep.

On this one this guy suprised me, I was taken macro shots of the anemone when this head popped out under me. Not the most pleasant time.

Wouldn't budge until later when it started swimming around, and then the action started. I'll upload the video this evening, movie is titled "Octopus orgy gone bad"...72 Mb, don't have time to edit or compress.

and this is another moray eel...actually he is the reason i went back to the octopus, he led us back to their mating session.

By the way any good software to convert mp4 to mpeg or avi?

My recent vacation.....was a disaster for the tank. I had 2 people taking care of the tank, but I think they were overwhelmed by the amount of work required. Anyhow, when i came back, it was basically a swamp...

-skimmer: off
-top off: empty
-return pump: spurting out more air than water
-calcium reactor: lets just say my fish, corals, and everything else in the tank have had a lifetime dosage of calcium. ph probe went completely haywire
- streams: one went off after falling in the sand, and second was actually lying in the sand.....kicking all the substrate around.

As a result....all sps, except 3 pieces died, as well as all my zoos, some mushrooms, feather duster, some lps, and one fish.....sniff sniff.

sand was covered in thick slime because of the corals melting away, coralline all over the glass panes....horrible.

Spent four days cleaning everything, getting rid of everything that was dead....partial water change....cleaned out the sand....a week of cleaning the glass....

But had enough.....it was very demoralizing to see all of it go to waste is only 14 days.

So.......I am shutting down the tank...finished bye bye had enough.

Well actually I can't stop, it is rather addictive. I have already transfered most of the things from the giant cesspool to my 55G tank which i just quickly put in place. God, it's difficult to squeeze all those corals into that tank. Well the problem is really with the live rock.....way too much to fit.

Over the weekend, which here is thursday and Friday, I'll siphon out all the water and sand and proceed with the cleaning of the tank. I'm also going to order a new skimmer from the states, hehehe got my bonus....extra cash to spend.....and we'll start again.

They may only swim around in circles, and ignore me,but i love my fish. Can't get rid of them. Well most of them.

Dilemna....

Decided to keep the 55G running also as a breeding tank for the clowns. I will keep the 9015 skimmer running on that one. SO i need a new skimmer. I don't know what to get from the following, any help would be appreciated...I cannot go bigger because of the height restrictions of the cabinet.
- deltec ap702
- shuran aquaflotor 200
- H&S 200 (either the eheim or aquabee)
- Tunze 9420

All are rated for around 2000L or more, so on paper more than enough. I am not worried about electrical costs, just performance....if anyone can suggest I'd appreciate it.

In France, several shops tried to convince me to go with Shuran....saying that it outperforms the Deltec....I wouldn't know since I've never had either....

Thanks

I have a ER but several of my club members have Deltecs and swear by them. I have never heard of Shuran.

I measured the exact space i have and apparently the shuran will not fit, so now it's either the deltec or the Tunze....and of course the 300 euro price difference in favor of the Tunze.

Deltec AP702 891 euros
Tunze 9420 530 euros

which one?????

Again I have no experience with the Tunze. I have never heard anyone blown away by them, but I am always hearing people brag about how great their Deltec is. I am also of the feeling you get what you pay for. Of course, if you can't afford the Deltec than that is a different story.

yes it is a different story, actually i sent an email to the online fish store in France i ordered all my current equipment from to get me the price on both skimmers with shipping cost and delivery times, so we will see....

I was also checking out the ATI BubbleMaster 250 today looks pretty interesting and the size is perfet, some pretty good reviews on it over at Singapore reef club (www.sgreefclub.com).

I hate skimmers ....so difficult to choose.

Sent an email today to www.meerwasser-onlineshop.de for price on the Bubblemaster, they already told me they have in stock and they are checking for shipping price to Saudi. Then I'll have to decide between the 3 options. Sorry actually 2 options, Tunze is out of the question as you need an additional 10cm clearance to remove the cup which I don't have.

So it's between the Deltec and the ATI.

As for the tank, well sand has been rinsed using saltwater, whatever rocks were not transfered to the 55G (which is most of them) have been cleaned off, and the tank has been refilled with 200G of new saltwater. So it'll stay like that for another 2 - 3 weeks during which I'll have time to get the skimmer, a new sump, and rework the plumbing.

The 55G is as clean as a whistle, the 9015 doing a more than excellent job of skimming the tank, although I've been having some problems when I turn the skimmer off for cleaning. The pump doesn't start unless i take it apart, don't know what the problem is. Posted a thread on Tunze forum, hopefully Roger will be able to help out. I'll try to post a picture of the tank tomorrow.
