Having a 55 myself I would not put any tang in there or a foxface but that's me. Either of those dwarf angels would be great. I like the flames myself but QT it with at least prazipro if you can. A midas blenny would be a fun and colorful fish to add.

A red velvet wrasse would stand out well. But any fairy or flasher would be good.

Long term stocking plan for my 125 fish-only tank

This is my long-term stocking plan for my new 5', 125 gal tank:

8 blue eyed cardinals
6 bangai cardinals
1 tasssled file fish*
2 niger triggers
1 blue-faced angel
1 harlequin tusk
1 yellow tang
1 hippo tang

The order listed above is the order i am planning to introduce these fish (except i plan to introduce the two tangs together at the end). here are my questions:
  1. Will i be overstocked?
  2. i know the tassled file fish gets big but i'm prepared to trade him in eventually. is there another issue with this fish?
  3. is the harlequin tusk going to be too aggressive for this combination?
  4. is my tank too small for a blue-faced angel? can i keep the blue-faced angel with no live rock or is that a requirement? (i work at home and can feed 5-6 times a day).

overall, i want a peaceful community tank with the blue faced angel as the boss.

6 mexican turbo snails
4 blue leg hermit crabs
1 peppermint shrimp

I am wanting to add:
a dwarf angel - can't decide between flame or coral beauty
a small tang - if possible? - thinking yellow or blue
some type of wrasse - my fav is bird but I know my tank is too small and its not reef compatible, so maybe a fairy wrasse?
skunk cleaner shrimp
and any other fish you think is appropriate? Im looking for vibrant colors.
I would not add any tang to a 55, your foxface is pushing it. Your 3 occ. clowns will become 2 in time -- once a true pair forms and they start spawning they won't take kindly to the third clown.

IMO --- you will be overstocked. The blueface will get too big, too bad because they are great looking fish. I would skip the hippo tang too -- they will get over a foot. 2 nigers is really going to be pushing it.

Don't have any experience with a tusk, so can't speak about it.

OK thanks on your insight. Hmm, these clowns have been in the tank for 3 months, is it suicide to add another clown? My LFS didn't fill me in on this bit of information or I would have made it an even number. I think their thinking was that I would probably lose one anyway and then it would be 2 left but, do I have to leave them now until one bites the dust, so to speak? There is definitely 2 that are close and the other one is kind-of an outcast usually, he is the smallest and appears to have roughed up bottom fins a bit. He stears clear of them and usually hangs out on the other side of the tank.

Okay, so I wont get any tangs then. Bummer.

reworked my stocking plan

ok, based on todd's input, i'm reworking my list:

8 blue-eyed cardinals
6 bangais
1 harlequin tusk
1 tassled file
1 niger trigger (instead of two)
1 semilarvatus butterfly
1 purple tang

would i be right to assume that a semilarvatus butterfly and a yellow tang would not get along?

longer term, i still want that blue-faced angel and may eventually convert my 200 gal freshwater over to salt to accomodate her. do you think it would be a problem adding her last after the tang?

When it comes to clowns, it is best to stick with one pair per tank. More then that usually works for the short term, but then any outsiders will be picked off. It would be best to get the one oddball out before it gets killed.

The purple tang is borderline, put it in last, they are pretty aggressive -- have seen one draw blood on a Clarkii clown.

How big is the 200 -- length-wise? Doing it after the tang might be an issue, depends on how big the blueface is.

what tangs stay small?

200 gal is a six footer. i would prefer a yellow tang to the purple but am worried he will fight with the semi. any thoughts?

what about a mimic tang? do they stay small and relatively docile?

I doubt the yellow tang would fight with a butterfly. They are usually aggressive towards other tangs.
A mimic and a kole tang would be good choices IMO
If you are going to add more than one tang then add the yellow tang last

Is a blue throat trigger truly reef safe? What is not safe with it in a reef tank?

I think I have my list compiled. What is the rule again for inches per gallon? is it 3 in to 1 gal? anyway let me know if I'm overstocked, this list isn't set in stone and of course they will not be added all at once.

1. kole yellow eye tang
2. yellow tang
3. flame angel
4. yellow watchman goby
5. firefish
6. purple dottyback
7. green/red mandarin (will add when tank is mature)
8. filamented flasher wrasse
9. yellowhead jawfish
10. Ocellaris clownfish (2)

If this isn't overstocked I would like to add another wrasse and maybe another goby/blenny

The inch per gallon rule isn't used anymore, and is about as useful as the watts per gallon rule -- there are way too many variables for it to be effective.

As for your list --- what size tank?

So I still haven't gotten any feedback on my list, so I changed the order to represent the order I want to add the fish. I want to add them in small groups perhaps and will separate the groups by spaces. Let me know if this is ok in a 125g tank with 30g sump.

Ocellaris clowns (2)

Firefish
Flame Angel

Filamented Wrasse
Bluehead wrasse
Yellow Coris Wrasse

Royal Gramma

randall's/orange stripe Goby
Starry Blenny
Yellow watchman goby

Yellow Jawfish
Green Mandarin (not until tank is mature)

Yellow Tang
spotted Bristletooth Tang

Is it ok to add blennies and gobies earlier on or is where I put them ok? I was just afraid there wouldn't be enough for them to graze on early on.

that's a great list and the order is great too. I am assuming you are adding the yellow tang together with the bristletooth

Exactly. This is why this thread was originally crafted. By far compatability is one of the biggest factors in stocking a tank

according to this profile it is

http://reefkeeping.com/issues/2009-04/fish/index.php

I still have problems personally with the word "truly" If you mean 100 per cent then I would say no trigger is 100 per cent reef safe----and it is usually the small inverts that they go after.

I have a 180 drilled with a sump. I plumbed in a refugium, but I have yet to find anyone locally who has some cheato they are willing to spare. I am planning to fill it with mangoves as well. I am currently running a coralife super skimmer 220 that is doing little to nothing for skimming. It acts more like an airator in a can.

Anyway, there is a little over 200lbs of coraline covered live rock alot of which is very porous. There is also 200lbs of live sand in the tank.

I plan on making the tank a full blown reef while keeping my girlfriends porcupine puffer housed in the tank. I have faith it will work because she takes no interest in snails, hermits etc. I haven't experimented with other crabs, but I know shrimp are much approved snacks for her. She never sharpens her beak on the rocks or even cares to acknowledge small tankmates. Should I rethink this or what?

Hello-great thread and I have read through a scary amount of the 100 pages... I am finishing the cycling on my tank and ready to introduce some fish. I have a 40 gallon tank which I plan on adding some softies, really like the look of zoas, and maybe some sponges- like a red ridge sponge. I do want to keep it more as a reef tank eventually though lights might need upgrading. I have a 65 watt 50/50 actinic light and a bakpak biological and skimmer, around 35 pounds live rock and 45 pounds live sand. In my reading and based on likes I have narrowed down my fish:
definite- 2 percula clowns, ywg (or similar watchman) and tiger pistol (cool symbiosis)

Optional and some combination of the below (to which I appreciate the feedback-no not all of them!)- some combo of flame, coral beauty and/or koran angel probably 2 of those three (introduced at same time and later on in process based on reading); some cardinal fish seems like they need 2-3; Exquisite wrasse (aka emerald fairy); cleaner shrimp, fire shrimp curious to how well these all get along- saw a youtube of a pistol after a cleaner shrimp; maybe a firefish or two, mandarins are just too pretty though will procrastinate due to the feeding difficulties, lawnmower blenny (how do they get along with YWG).
Probably not all of the above and will also add the nassarius, maybe one turbo and some nerites. Hearing mixed reviews on crabs- maybe a couple of scarlets or red legs for detritus. Thoughts on various combos and interaction on the above appreciated.

To Reef Central

Walking out the door, but... what size 40? (( 36" long? ))

Either way, the Koran angel is a no go --- would need at least an 8 foot tank, and even then that would be pushing it.

thanks for the quick response Todd ,it is a 40 gal cube style. Good to know on the Koran couldn't find much on them when I searched. I know the coral beauty and flame are less reef safe than the others but would be an awesome addition to the tank.
Appreciate thoughts on the others

Looks good, though I would skip the yellow tang in a 55.

They are one of the larger "large" angels.

I would be a bit wary about doing 2 dwarf angels in that shaped/sized tank -- would only do it if you have an easy option for one of them if it doesn't work out.

2 Ocellaris Clownfish (amphiprion ocellaris)

1 Firefish (goby) (nemateleotris magnifica)

1 Coral Beauty (centropyge bispinosa)
-or-
1 Flame Angelfish (centropyge loriculus)

1 Bicolor Dotty back (pictichromis paccagnellae)

1 Bluehead Fairy Wrasse (cirrhilabrus cyanopleura)

1 Royal Gramma Basslet (gramma loreto)

1 Yellow Watchman Goby (cryptocentrus cinctus) AND 1 Pistol Shrimp

1 Sailfin/Algae (Lawnmower) Blenny (salarias fasciatus)

1 Spotted Bristletooth Tang (ctenochaetus truncates)
-or-

Open to suggestions on a larger, reef safe fish

Are they in the right order?
Too many? Room for more?
Any changes you would make?

34 Gallon Solana:
Currently have
2x Clown Fish (False Percula)
Yellow Clown Goby

Future stocking "list"
2x Firefish
1x Watchman or Yosha Goby (for pistol shrimp pair)

Too many fish? Anything incompatible? I have 3 different types of Goby's, Is there a potential problem?

Also want to get cleaner shrimp, wondering if pistol will kill them
