Well, it would appear the "big" rios are bad and the small one (600 & 800) seem to be good.

Mine are still pumping away (over 8 years now). In fact, the one used on my BakPak is in the CPR BakPak Overflow attachment. When it makes that sucking sound, meaning it is running out of water, I know it is time to add some.

1/4 Rios (600 went out), 2 other 600's and 1-2100 fine
0/1 Penguin
0/1 Maxijet.

Had one Rio melt, Others have been running for 3+ years with no problems.

Rio is what comes standard with the Bac-Pac skimmer, isn't it? Mine's still going after 4 years. Honestly couldn't tell you what it is, because it's never been a problem. But, then neither is my mag24, hehe.

RIO 3100 - 0
RIO 2100 - 0
RIO 800 - 1
RIO 600 - 0
RIO 200 - 0

MJ 1200 - 0

Currently running the RIO 3100 as a sump return, the 2100 stirs salt makeup, the 600 stirs TopOff and the 200 is retired.

The 3 MJ 1200's run on my wavemaker with no problems.

My only complaint about the RIOs is restarts. I burnt up the RIO 800 running dry

Christian

The problem seems to be when something causes them to jam. Calcium deposit, some type of foreign matter, what ever. They then overheat from trying to run, and the end result is for it to ooze something into your tank. This "something" has been said many times to cause catastrophic system crashes.
With all the people here relating the problems they've had, I can't see why anyone that's read this would continue to press their luck. What's the price of a well known quality pump in comparison to the value of your system, and the animals' lives in your charge?

What really stinks is you have to use a rio pump with the aquafuge.

I learn after the 1ST time also but purchased 2 rio 2500 and 1 rio 800 initially (all in the garbage long time ago. I replaced (2500) impeller and tried in both units, worked very briefly, and said GOODBYE TO RIO (kept impeller as souveneir)

Rio 2500 crapped out

rio 2500 crapped out after only 3 months. Cleaned up once a month. Burned up and polluted tank. Unfortunatley didn't have another tank to put livestock in. Will never use rios again!!!

Mine didn't totally die, but I took it out because it started making noise and I use it only to mix water now. I use a maxijet 1200 instead.

Add another one to the list. My 2500 didn't trash the tank but it came close enough hissing and such. Glad i caught it in time.

1/2 RIO 3100
0/2 RIO 2500
0/1 RIO 1700
0/1 RIO 800
0/5 Maxijet
3/3 Powersweep

Rio pumps are okay, not impressive. Sucks to have your main pump die, but at least it got me to buy a better pump, one that I am waaaaay happier with and that I believe will work a long time.

Powersweeps are utter crap. I will never buy another.

One Rio 3100 burned up mixing saltwater, the whole bucket turned black.
Two Rio 400's just plain wore out and barely pumped water within a year
One broken maxijet out of 4
One perfectly running Magdrive 850, 3 years strong.
One Dolphin 650 running good for about a month

WOW, I cant believe all these RIO stories. I have had mine for almost 10 years! I have a RIO 2500 and nothing has gone one it. I orginially had it as a sump on my 60, stayed there for 4 years then was used on a fresh water thank for 2 years. Sat for a year outside in the garage then put it in a pond for 2 more years, man it took a beating in the pond. Now its back in a salt running like a top. Maybe the old RIO's were nice. I wouldnt trade mine for anything.

What? I can't beleive this, why do rios suck so badly and yet people go out and buy them all the time, even if they fail?

I am only running 2 penguin 550 powerheads, no problems with them, but am thinking of getting a rio 1500 for a sump, but having second thoughts.
