That Philippe Grosjean drop-off reef tank is truly amazing.

Thats actually quite an interesting idea!

Just an update from when I last posted pics last December. 85g SPS system.

I had color/growth issues until the last few months. Primary changes include increasing the photoperiod to 9 hours from 5 or 6, and feeding more food.

My orange montipora is out of control. It's not even on a rock, lol. It just sits on the sand.

Love the look of this tank - can you post a link to your build thread please. Thanks.

You know, I did make a build thread but dang if I can find it! I swear I put it in the SoCal reefers forum, titled something like 85g SPS Build Thread.

If you find it, let me know, lololol!

My system's not terribly complicated. Just use a Profilux doser (Bulk Reef Supply 2-part,), 250w Radium in a Lumenmax Elite reflector, Galaxy electronic ballast, Tunze Nanowave Box, ATB 840 Skimmer, dose about 5 ml of vodka a day, 9 hour photoperiod, feed pinch of flake food a day, 1x per week feed Coral Frenzy (1/4 tsp or so).

I did add some nitrate to my system about a month ago, via a freshwater supplement. Corals seemed to like it but who knows. Nitrate never registers in my system, so I wanted to see what would happen if I had the tiniest bit show on the test kit.

I feed my rose anemone a good blast of PE Mysis each week. I had it a month and it split twice, lol....not a bad thing as it was a super expensive coral from Cherry Corals

I keep my alk high 7's or 8.0....whatever as long as my morning pH isn't below 8 I'm happy.

Thanks Adddo! When I search for threads posted under my name, that particular one doesn't come up for me. Odd.

Awesome tank, I love the design. I can't imagine how difficult it must have been to make sure the stand exactly match the dimensions of the tank otherwise the stress would definitely cause a failure.
That's definately a unique tank, but if I was going to do that I would just buy a square tank & block off that underside section of the reverse "L" with my stand facade & make a box inside the tank.

You wouldn't have to deal with all the structural/stress nightmares that way.

On the whole Modern tank "open top" concept........although they look pretty they aren't practical if you value your fish. Someone needs to get more creative & come up with modern setups that aren't open tops.

I don't know if this is old news or not, but I just saw the new line of Fluval Edge tanks, and dang they look sleek!

Almost all the pictures you find are freshwater, and six gallons is a little small, but if someone could DIY up a bigger version I think it would make a stunning reef!

I've been wanting one of those for about 6 months for my office.

If I was going to do a large version for saltwater, it would be HUGE... about 5 feet tall.

btw, those normally retail for $130 but i saw them on sale at petsmart today for $99. So tempted.

Here is my "new" tank. Had the tank for a while now but we redid the stand when we redecorated the place, so kind of new The red stand automatically made it seem more modern.

The tank:

be leary of those edge tanks, the pictures of the fully planted FW tanks are highly deceptive. The lighting is wholly insufficient to grow anything. I think it has two small LEDs in the hood. You would need a major upgrade to grow much of anything.

Justinreef - I'd love to just hang out in that room. It looks great.

I like the Edge tanks too, but I'd think it would be best for a dwarf seahorse tank, or all inverts that crawl around. Maybe a suncoral tank.

I wasn't talking about growing any corals in it, or even freshwater plants. I just think the tank looks cool enough that I wouldn't mind having one on my desk filled with glo fish and a plecostomus.

That being said, if you wanted to do saltwater what about a non-photosynthetic cold water anemone and some pacific coast inverts? I guess you would have to find a way to plumb in a chiller.
