I pulled the trigger and bought 3 of the 120w fixtures that are being driven at 2 watts for my 220 mixed reef, mostly softies with lps and Chalices, they will be here in 4 days, so I will post pics and results every week of the progress.. I went with the taotronics.

For the record, I went to my LFS today, and he had both the 1watt and the 2watt fixtures that are being discussed here running on his frag tanks. I have to say, the fixtures look great, and the corals looked even better! After seeing them in action I'd be very likely to purchase a couple of these in the future.

I had a hard time noticing any difference in intensity between the 1w and 2w models, but the 1w fixtures had more LEDs, so maybe that's why.

Funny, looks like this thread has morphed from why not to buy these units to "that sounds like a pretty good deal, i'm gonna try these units out." Mine should be delivered today.....

This will give me around 10inches from the water. I'm also going to do the screen acclimation for a couple weeks.
Just make sure not to block the air intakes on the sides. Also, these fans aren't the quietest in the world, so it might add some noise in the room this way.

Yeah I found that out today. I mounted them using L-brackets under the beams inside my canopy. This way there is no holes on top of the canopy and they are still about 9inches off the water. I'm in the process of switching stands too so this won't happen for about another week and that's when I'm gonna swap canopies and lights and will get some pics up then.

+1 Could not have said it better.

I think these are the ones Ezerasurfr bought. I just picked up one from aquariumleds.com. If I end up needing another one I may pickup one of the ebay units to see how they compare.

Tehfeer,

Funny you say that. I was thinking of buying the 14k one from aquariumleds to compare to my Taotronics.

I really want to buy one if these. But my confidence is not bolstered by the fact that my color options are white and "blace"

ezra those look good. Nice 14K look. I'm just wondering if I went this route on my 57G rimless (36x18 footprint) I would most likely need two as well unfortunately. Dunno if one of these would cut it.

I got my 20k 120 watt units yesterday and will try to get some pics soon, my tank isn't set up yet. I will put them over my bro in law's next his 14k hqi 250w and show some comparisons. I can easily say it is just as bright looking at it though

OK this going to be somewhat pic heavy.
I went from 250watt Radiums run on a Coralvue ballast with Lumenbrite reflectors to a 20k aquariumleds.com 120 watt LED unit.

The unit was boxed fairly well. It was shipped out of Toronto and arrived in Los Angeles in about 6 business days. UPS tracking number was provided.

As you can somewhat see from the second picture, the light was super bright.

Here is a pic of my existing setup. You can see the halide gave somewhat of a spotlight effect.

Next picture is with just the blues on. Its super blue - appears to be even more blue than the VHO actinics that I used to run on my old tank.

Next picture is the whites (don't judge me on the hair algae on the tunzes!). The picture gives off a very yellow hue, but its not that yellow in real life.

Last pic is both the blues and whites on at the same time. Color is very similar to the radium set up I was running. The main difference is that the halide setup seemed much brighter. Oddly enough, I seem to be getting much better spread on the LEDs. I think the spotlight effect on the halide was the result of the lumenbrite reflector.

Overall I think i preferred my halide set up because it visually seemed much brighter.

Still the LED's do have quite a few pros: I setup the actinics to come on first (giving that dawn/dusk effect, I'm saving about 120 watts for 7 hours a day, I don't have to replace a $85 bulb every year and heat isn't really an issue anymore.
