The actual tank and equipment are great. Why is it such an amazing display though? Are you referring to what it can/grow to be? I don't get it.

If this is a `real reef' ... then where are all the darn sponges?

I look for those before sand ... and generally are non-existent in aquaria.

Thus the lack of sandy areas as well ... sorta like the lack of large predators, parrotfish, cephalopods, and tons of other parts of a reef. IMO starboard is just aesthetically acceptable to some, not to others ... but would only be a small part of a `real reef' [IMO] that would be left out of our tanks. Sorta like how some like dark colored sand ... just that function plays a large role here.

Personally, our tanks are so much less complex, `complete', or representative that I find this focus on substrate to be somewhat silly as there's so many other constituents of the reef that we cannot support or do not include in our tanks - and are easily overlooked.

Just my opinion, but spending last week diving a couple times a day made me realize how our tanks are artifical, tiny replications and trying to make it a complete, representative system of all the parts to just one reef is just not feasible. Just my take, though.

Aesthetic-wise - it's doubtful we'd all like the same thing anyway - so not suprising we find different things pleasing to the eye. You like sand, I like starboard [or don't care] ... he likes redheads, I could care less. I'm glad we disagree, as it makes much better variety of eye-candy in tank photos

Fine, don't take my word for it.

Just kidding. You're so right.

I've got a few sponges; and I like red heads, too.

edit: I mean, I've got some hitch-hiker sponges.

It still looks all brown to me. Actually I am curious as too why? Is that just what you like? Please don't misunderstand. I have been a long time follower of your tanks and I do think you know your stuff. I just wondered why this latest tank which has become such the rave is so plain looking. I would have thought of all people you could have the bright purples/greens/reds/etc that I see in reef tanks.

I did see that one spot of green, and if memory servers you do have a few more.....spots. I just expected a lot more color.

Ah, but this is a Caribbean reef tank, with Acropora not usually seen in most reef tanks [A. cerv.] ... which is always `golden' colored.

Nothing's going to make them green/blue/purple ... they don't come like that. I think there are a few Montipora in this tank [Pacific] so he is cheating ... but I bet there would be plenty of fools like me who would gladly trade any # of neon Acropora for a piece of one of these rare [in aquaria] brown ones.

But if you've spent much time underwater in the Carib area ... they're terribly beautiful as they're `home team colors', brown or not. Just my take, but like a number of things in this tank ... it makes me warm and fuzzy as it looks like the reefs I've been to.

But maybe I've only been to those schwag Carib reefs

Ah..that explains it then. It still is a beautiful tank, no doubt about it. I still think he has all his snails super glued to the bottom of the tank though. Probably that is the reason you never really see many pictures of the room the tank is in, or at least the far wall. Before he figured out how to keep the snails in the tank, that current he has trucking through there spattered them all over the far wall.

Oh, and melev...I just found out where you live. Turns out on one of my trips down to Dallas to visit my good friend Andy, he knew all about you, being as you are all in the same reef club. Amazing how small a world it is sometimes. He tells me you just love people to bring all their sump parts to your house so you can build it for them. Says it is the one thing you absolutely LIVE FOR!!!

I can't tell you how excited I was to hear that.

Brian, for the type of tank this is and the type of animals that are in it, it has a massive amount of color. I don't punch the colors in photoshop.
