Definitely glad to have you with us. Start a thread documenting your tank and your experience with it, and let me know when you do so I can follow along.

Sounds like the people that suggested you come here are great guys and steered you in the right direction. Start new threads and ask away, try out the search function, chances are, someone has asked the very same question already. Good luck with your new 55.

Hello my name is Robert, just started a new 10 gallon fowler set up and all is looking good. Did measurements this morning and just the ph was at 7.8 other than that everything is was perfect. Water was at 1.024 and temp about 77.6. I added 2 juvenile clownfish and they seem to be doing well. I am moving into a 75 gal. setup, but wanted to start here and see how it goes. I have all the equipment, proclear wet/dry 150, berlin skimmer, ca 2200 and rio 800 pumps, max jet 1200 pump, heater, oolitic fiji sand, coralife 4ft lunar aqualight, etc. just trying to learn how to put it together and start out slow. Purcahsed a RO/DI system to help with water. Any tips would be helpful?

I live in central florida and would like to know where I can get a good price on base and live rock? Also when I'm ready for frags and anemones, and fish... The local stores are always trying to sell you stuff at inflated prices and this whole setup I have been shopping on craig'slist or given to me.

As for local places, Reef Central has a great section for local clubs, check them out here. there are eight clubs in Florida, I'm sure there's a couple near you.

Good Luck.

Just wanted to say Hi all..

Ive been keeping fish for a couple of years now, all African Cichlids. I THINK I'm ready to try my hand at saltwater. I have been researching and reading for weeks. I just picked up an awesome 90 gal that I plan on using. Right now I'm piecing together a list of all materials needed and trying to find the best prices.

Anyways, great place here.. I have learned a lot already!

Macrorocks is having a special 50# pounds of their nice base rock for $109 shipped to your door. I've heard good things about their stuff., I may order some too in near future for my new 55g reef tank under construction.

I need a bit of help. I set up a 30 gal tank 2 weeks ago.. I have 2 inch's of carib sea crushed coral as a sub. I also got 35 lbs of cured Fiji from my LFS.
I set up the tank and put the live rock in the tank. I also have a 150 gph filter and 2 , 750 gph power heads in the tank. Heater too. The tank has been cycling for 2 weeks like I said. salt level is 1.023.. In the first week the ammonia level started to climb . I know this is normal. In the second week now the Ammonia is gone down abit about 5 ppm and the Nitrates are at around 10 ppm.
I thought the ammonia would go to zero then the Nitrite would climb then go down then same with Nitrates.
Is this normal?
Could some one help out. I know its best not to start to panic and to take it slow .
Thanks Again Everyone.
Mark

It’s completely normal for you to get nitrites, to start as the ammonia is starting to come down, especially when you introduced live rock to your tank. You are in the midst of your cycle which is a good thing, once the ammonia reaches 0 then you can start to add clean up crew.

If you have anything in the tank that has started the cycle (like a dead shrimp) then it’s time to remove it. Ammonia at 5 is pretty darn high. Unless you mean 0.5. Not that it matters, your bacteria will eventually take control of everything once it colonizes.

Hello All, I just found this site a few days ago (could have used it 2 years ago when i started my first tank...would have saved me a lot of confusion and cash). I started with a 75 gallon bowfront....then discovered the power of a refugium....but my coarals wouldnt grown....then I found out about this crazy invention called metal halide lights....and upgraded to a 125 gallon tank....and built a awesome reef tank that I loved....but there were so many fish that i couldnt put in it....and craigslist had this great deal for a 240 gallon acrylic tank (just had a lot of scratches and a ugly stand)...but i was to impatient to do anything about the scratches or the stand and set it up as a fish only....right next to the reef tank and fed out of the same refugium, so it was one big system. then i got sent to iraq and the people i was renting from told me a week before i left that they were going to sell the house while i was gone (i already had fishsitters lined up and everything) so i had to tear the whole system down and sell all my fish and corals. when i got back i just set up a 36 gallon reef that has been doing awesome....but its to small again. So i am in the process of setting up the 240 as a reef tank. but this time im taking everything i learned and am doing it right. the tank is at ATM right now getting the scratches removed, im getting a very nice stand built for it and ive got a whole bunch of new equipment showing up daily at my house. so this is going to be a fun build. And in doing research for it i found this site, joined and this is my very first post.

Hello there! My name is Rochelle and I will soon be starting this amazing hobby =0) When I was very young, my 20-something sister had a huge tank, and I was mesmerized. She recently gave up the hobby and gave me all of her equipment. She is very excited to help me set-up my 75g tank. Looking forward to getting to know everyone and learn A LOT from this site!

It needs to new flow pumps I've found online for 17.99 and two new T5 bulbs. I've had lots of freshwater experience in the past, but this will be my first salt water setup. New to RC

Hi,
My name is Karen and I kept a 37 gal tall fish-only tank for 4 years. I had a small Humu-Humu Trigger, a baby Red Volitans Lionfish, and a lawnmower blenny. 7 months ago, I bought my first Mushroom coral. Completely fascinated by that, I started adding other soft corals. Moved to a 75 Gal tank (for room) with T-5 lighting and added 3 young Ocellaris clowns, one orange, 2 black. I kept adding corals, trying my hand at LPS, then a Gorgonian, then SPS. Strangely enough, the Trigger is very happy, is the welcoming committee for anything new, only moves the corals once in a while, and all fish are hand fed. I am so obsessed with the reef now, I come home with a new coral every other day to once a week! I do have a 10 gal hospital tank where I collect corals in need of TLC.

It really has become a huge part of my life, helps keep my sanity, and is a big hit to the wallet... But well worth it!!

I'm here because I find myself perusing the forums for advice all the time. I am always trying to do research, and finally bit the bullet to get some real help!
