This is a cycleing tank so I am still waiting for stock so please help me with the order also. Thanks to all the Vets.

2 picasso clowns
2 banggai cardnalfish
1 McCoskers flasher wrasse
1 Yellow Watchman Goby & 1 Pistol Shrimp Pair

Also if I might have room for more, please recommend something that is colorful and compatable.

I will have CUC of some sort and Corals.
Your stocking list sounds fine. Be sure the cardinalfish are a bonded pair (male plus female) or they will be only one. If you can find a female to pair your flasher wrasse, it will be an interesting display. I would add clowns last.

Thanks Steve for the quick reply. It is exciting to know the list is close to being finalized. So If I find a wrasse pair think I will be fine with the stock level?

Your stocking level is fine even if you don't pair the flasher wrasse. I suggested pairing it as it will evoke interesting behavior in the male. Females are difficult to find as they are less frequently imported.

Lighting for Anemone

I am thinking about purchasing the following anemones bubble, white sebae and/or long tentacle and wanted to know if my lighting system was adequate to keep one happy. I have this type of lighting system. Current USA Nova Extreme T5 Aquarium Lighting Fixture, 4X24 Watt, 24 inch with Two 24 Watt SlimPaq 10K and two 24 watt 460nm Actinic Blue T5 HO fluorescent lamps.

This thread is really about fish which is my area of expertise. However, my compatriot Todd has expertise with clownfish and their anemones. Perhaps he can answer this for you.

To Reef Central

Thanks Steve.

First, do NOT purchase a white sebae (( H. Crispa )), they are bleached -- have lost all their internal algae, which provides their "food".

What sized tank? Need to know that to determine if your lighting would be enough.
Also, do you have a sandbed? -- H. Crispas and LTAs (( M. doreensis )) are both sand dwelling anemones.

That won't be, IMO, enough lighting for any hosting anemone -- would like, if using T5s, at least 4*54 watt (( 48 inch )), with individual reflectors.

Thanks so much Steve. I will be on a look out for the pair. Looks like I have my list. Thanks once again

I do have another lighting system but I am unsure of the exact specs since someone gave it to me. It says current on the side it is 48 inches in length and has eight bulbs divided in half four bulbs on the left four on the right. Do you have any idea what kind this is and if I switched would it be enough light.

58gal (36x18x21)

Filtration:
LR
Sump
Skimmer
Fuge

Current stock list:
Clown"1
Leapord wrasse 4"
yellow coris wrasse 1.5"
regal tang 2"

I am looking to add some fish that school or just hang close. I plan on getting another clown down the road.

I would like to get 5 to 6 green chromis would this be to many to add to my tank? How many would you recommend I heard they will kill each other off if there not in larger groups?

What type of clown?

I would lose the regal tang before adding any fish.

I, along with numerous others, have had back luck with chromis (( regardless of number )), end up with just one after a length of time. So, I personally would skip them.

Could try some Orange Lined Cardinalfish (( Apogon cyanosoma )), or Longspine Cardinalfish (( Zoramia leptacanthus )) if you want a group -- though that would really depend on the type of clown you have. I had to sell my pink skunk pair (( from my 58 )) because of how aggressive they became after they started spawning.

We have a 29 Gallon Biocube. It is pretty much stock. We are new to this hobby so all we did was make sure it had fresh lights. We had a 12 Gallon Nano and recently upgraded to this. It has been running well for about 2 months now.

We have 2 nassarius snails, 3 other snails, 1 cleaner shrimp, 1 fire shrimp, 5 small hermit crabs, 1 larger hermit crab, 1 pistol shrimp/yellow watchman pair, 1 banghai cardinal and recently (about a week ago) added a scopas tang and a red scooter blenny.

The scopas tang is fun to watch because he is fast and active but the goby will not even poke his head out now. I can still see him so I know he is still there. The tang has him scared. We are having trouble getting food to the goby and the blenny who does seem to be eating the mysis when he can get any. The tang takes over when it is feeding time.

Should we get rid of the tang? If so any suggestions on fish that will do well with what we already have but still be fairly active and peaceful.

Please help the newbies!!!!!!
Thanks in advance!

I would definitely remove the tang and bring it back to the LFS. A scooter blenny is problematic in that sized tank because it eats primarily copepods (although it will also eat frozen) as it feeds constantly.

We will most likely take the Tang back to the LFS. Then we will obviously give the tank mates a week or two to readjust before getting anything new. I am now feeling like trusting the LFS with advice may not be such a good thing so can you give some advice in fish that are a bit more active that will do okay in our Biocube 29.

Also is there a way to feed the blenny the copepods successfully? Like to give him a bit more to eat, we like him?

Thanks again for the advice.
Staci

Staci, if your LFS recommended ANY tang for your tank, they have a major credibility problem in my eyes. Remember we here at RC and especially in this thread have your best interests at heart; we do not sell fish, your LFS does.

Yes, I too like the scooter blenny; it will eat mysis, it will also eat capelin fish roe but that may be difficult for you to find. Nutramar ova would work, but feed sparingly. Multiple times per day is best for this fish and others, but with only a moderate amount of food.

I am very fond of possum wrasses. While they are cryptic (that is they hide in your aquascaping), they do come out and have interesting behaviors. I think one would do well in your tank.

But remember that a very active fish will not do well in a smallish tank. Try to think interesting behaviors rather than active.

Copepods can be semicultivated by creating a small pile of rubble in one corner of your tank. This gives them a little mini refugium where they can breed without being immediately eaten. Best would be a real refugium with chaeto, but on a nanocube, that may prove problematical.

I am not a fan of urchins because they tend to be bulldozers and knock stuff around. If I were getting an urchin, I would consider tuxedo urchins. Triggers are a bit of a problem for cleanup crew (which I recommend) but while presenting some difficulties, have interesting albeit aggressive personalities. If it were me, and I were new to salt water, I would tend to choose smaller fish with interesting habits and personalities which are not aggressive to their tankmates. Examples would include: a shrimp/goby combination, a blenny, flasher wrasses, the nonaggressive fairy wrasses, etc. My advice for new to the hobby is to start with easy fish to get experience rather than more difficult fish, e.g. triggers, that require greater expertise and problem solving. Also, while this thread is primarily about fish, I would also suggest that bioballs are not the best filtration, and pose that question in the New to the Hobby Forum.

I was looking to stop at about 5 fish. For coral, I've got a couple LPS now, a few polyps, and a small toadstool. I do want to get an anemone, some SPS and maybe even a clam, so that's why the angel is at the bottom

I've spent a little time thinking about which clown to pick as I wanted a variety of colors and bright ones at that. I was a little unsure about a wrasse as Live Aquaria has them listed at 50g and everything else seems small and friendly. Listed in preference order:

Have
Royal Gramma

Want
Pink Skunk Clown
Flame or Longnose Hawkfish
Canary Blenny

Like
Second Clown
Lubbock's Fairy Wrasse
Firefish (if no blenny)

Wish
Coral Beauty
Maroon Clowns
Pygmy Cherub

Thanks!

The Maroon clowns are out -- no more then one pair of clowns per tank.
Do you plan on having any shrimp? (( the hawkfish might be an issue ))

The clowns could turn aggressive (( even the pink skunks )) when/if they start to spawn. I had to sell my pair of pink skunks because they became way too aggression -- attacking my dwarf angels.

Can't speak of the canary blenny -- never had one.

Might have a few issues with the royal gramma being in the tank first -- might have to re-arrange the rocks.

For that sized tank I would stick with just one dwarf angel.

The wrasse will jump, so make sure the tank is covered or has netting over it.

Right now a have an empty 55g tank with about 80 lbs of live rock. I have a 12g CPR 194 sump/skimmer that is rated for 100-150 gallon tanks. I have 2 x150w MH plus 4x24w CF lights.

I first one to get some invertabrates. I am thinking about buying a package that contains:

Dwarf White Leg Hermit Crabs 20
Blueleg Hermit Crab 20
Emerald Crabs 3
Brittle Starfish 1
Peppermint Shrimp 1
Turbo/Astrea Snail 20
Cleaner Clam 2
Nassarius Snail 10

This seems like a lot of stuff but it says it is for 30-90 gallon reef tanks.

When I add fish I would like to add:

Damsel - 1
Clowns - 2
Chalk Basslet-1
Flasher wrasse - 1
cardinalfish - 3
tang (not sure the type yet) - 1

Eventually I would like to add anenomes, polyps etc to make it a reef tank. Let me know if any has any suggestions on fish or inverts. The link I am looking at is:
