Thanks guys....getting there
Thanks guys for the input and suggestions...
I think I am going to go in the direction of doing a custom sump either L shaped (with a slant corner to avaiod a dead spot) or multi level....I am playing with the design now...I may even build a ro/di resivor for ATO. I like the round sump, but I think I can get better use of my space with an l-shaped or multilevel. I will be workig on that and postign my design/ideas... Next I need to figure out about a custom canopy. I just need to design and use lighting that will keep heat to a minimum- as there is no way I can add a chiller. I am steering towards all T-5s.... any thoughts? the metals and others (except LED) tend to be on the hot side right? Also just got my copy of "The Conscientious Marine Aquarist" book...to build up on my knowledge base etc...and help me ensure I make the right decisions early on in my set up. |

My rock has been cured and has was added to my DT and aquascaped. The diatom bloom seems to be over and I added a hammer, a candy cane, some zoos and a ricordia. So far so good.
The rock is spaced away from the side walls as you can see in the second two pics. I have two Koralia 2 PHs in the back corner placed low to keep flow moving in these areas. You can see the other PHs. I think I may need one more shooting toward the front through the cave in the rock. I included a better pic of the 55gallon drum sump for thoes who may want to use this set up even though I have decided to move the sump to the basement. I think this is the easiest/cheepest way to go with the most amount of room and water volume for this type base. Opinions please. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]()

Thanks for the thread, although I have already read it! I've been doing a lot of searching about this option, but was curious about the size I will need for a corner tank. Just hoping someone in here had embarked on this journey. I guess I will be the guinea pig! I am going to start in Jan. I will keep everyone posted!

Hello guys, I'm not sure if I have posted here or not, I have had a 92g oceanic for about a year now and have been lurking around here. I am in the process of designing a custom sump that I will be fabricating myself with acrylic. I had an idea and wondered if anyone else has something similar. I was thinking of where to put the ato was thinking to utilize the space that I left behind the tank to reach back and clean the glass with a mag float. I am going to get a few long sticks of 3" PVC and cut them down to the hight of my tank and connect them all together in a manifold style on the top and bottom and tie that to a float valve. Sound good? I just did the math and a 4'-3" pipe will hold just under 1.5g, I'm thinking maybe 7 pipes and about an inch in-between to thread a 3/4" fitting will be about 30" wide and the tank side is 34" so it will be hidden nicely And hold about 10g. It should last me about a week and a half, What do you think? Worth it to save the space? Or just dump in a few gallons every few days?

It sounds good in theory but it will make getting back to clean the glass a pain. I have been toying with mounting my dry side mag float to a yard stick which could solve the problem.
I also decided to move my sump to the basement and make it much larger. My ato runs directly from the rodi unit but this makes it difficult to dose kalk which I really want to do. I am just trying to decide what pump to go with. If you don't have the luxury of a sump room then I think your idea has merit. What are you thinking, a bunch of "Tees" on the bottom? Post up a drawing.

I didn't think weight would be an issue, it will be on the floor snug against the wall and tank so it's more of a balancing act then holding the weight. The pipes should hold their own weight right?
Here in crappy...oops I mean sunny... Florida we have no basement. It would be a swimming pool very soon if you tried. So that's out and I rent so no holes in the walls for a fishroom. Last edited by dendrodude; 12/03/2010 at 05:50 AM. Reason: Add text |

nope. I am friendly, don't be defensive, I will have to watch how I word things in the future. I forget that people cant see expression or sincerity. It was a step in the right direction and I appreciate it. It did take me a few to figure out the export 2d thing.
a few tank pics I had a huge battle with cyano algae and won. Then the available nutrients were taken over by green hair algae. I built an algae scrubber and it is about 4-5 weeks, cleaning every week it has just now started to pull algae out of the tank to where I can notice it is making a difference. This is why I am redesigning my sump to allow me to fit the skimmer I am going to purchase and relocate the scrubber out of the way. My sump design as well. The algae scrubber and a MR1 will be off the return pump manifold. The whole housing of the algae scrubber will also be removable |

Hey Kids! thought i'd post some pics of the 92. A while back you might remember i had to re-seal it; well it's been up and running for a while now and my lazy backside finally snapped a couple shots for you...
![]() ![]() however, my 430 ballast keeps blowing out my 3 24" T5 bulbs so the only thing running is a 250w MH. Perhaps i just need to put in a workhorse and leave it be. |

Hi -I just discovered this thread and can't wait to read it.
I have a 92 corner with a 20 high sump. It is lit with 250W MH lighting. It has been set up since 2004. This is a pic from years ago, but I need to take a new one to share. I had a crash in August and I am working on getting it back. ![]() Last edited by jenghes; 12/21/2010 at 07:23 PM. |

Here is a more recent pic - I had a tank crash in August and had to basicly start over with corals, fish etc. I am still going through the algea stages (dinos, cyano, HA) and have bubble algea. I am working hard at kicking the issue.

Very nice Jenghes.
I love those frag station and think that they may have to find a place in my tank.... gonna check them out for sure....... I wish I could fit a bigger sump under my tank but alas.......oh well. I am planning on purchasing a calcium reactor and trying to figure out how I am gonna do it under there. Keep us posted on the progress of the rebuild.....

I forgot to post my 20g high sump. It is a little unconventional since I only have single walls in it - but it works for me. They are plexiglass and I drilled lots of little holes in them to allow the water to pass through.
The first section is my inlet/sock/skimmer. In the sock, I have a stocking of GFO to force the water through. I also drape a stocking of carbon. The second is the "fuge" I keep some rubble/chaeto and right now a pair of baby onyx clowns, since the sump is fully devided, they are safe from the pumps down there. Once our basement is finished, I plan to start a small tank for their permanent home. It is lit with an el-cheapo spiral bulb. The third is the return pump. On the other side under the tank is my MH ballast. ![]() ![]() |
