I have to because of the Instant Ocean salt mix I am using. As soon as I am finished the last pail I am switching to H2Ocean which has a much higher magnesium level in it.
I am using epsom salts right now because it is taking so much to keep the mag level at 1400 ppm(corals seem to be happier with that rather then 1300 ppm)

check your salt mixture out here---it can make a difference on how much 2 part and mag you use

I use Instant Ocean also. So your using B-Ionic Mag and epsom together? How do you know how much epsom salt to add?

no--just the epsom salts right now--I get 2lbs of it for the same price of 500grams of b-ionic mag

I use the dosing calculator on the reef chemistry forum

http://reef.diesyst.com/cf/chemcalccf.html

put your existing level of mag in there--the desired level--select the product and it gives you how much you need
and important--how much to dose a day to bring up the levels

BTW
using epsom salts is not a long term solution to raising mag levels. Long term use has the possibility of building hydrogen sulfide up in deep sand beds which is not a good thing for fish.

I am just dosing with it until I get rid of the last IO salt mix
which I have checked out with the chemistry guys as being okay to do temporarily.

I'll post test results after 7 days of dosing.

OK Capn... 7 days of dosing B-Ionic. I did some testing this morning. I also did a five gallon WC last night.

SG - 1.026
PH - 8.8
dKH - 10
CAL - 500
NO3 - 10
PO4 - 0

Is the PH high because test was done without lights for 10hrs?

NO3 could be up because I just noticed dirty filter sock? I will change that ASAP.

I will test PH and NO3 later in the day.

Do you think the CAL is high?

Your thoughts please.

tangweed---always make the weekly tests before you do a water change. Depending on the salt mix you are using you won't get results that reflect the weeks dosing.

Ph seems like a miss reading to me --pH in large is related more to the exchange of co2 in your tank and the level of it in the surrounding room. Make sure the surface of your tank is really churning and not covered and open a window close to the tank over night

What salt mix are you using

Nitrates have nothing to do with dosing but all to do with feeding routines, the flow in your tank, the amount of live rock and the filtration system you have(dsb or refugium?)

Do you think the CAL is high?

Your thoughts please.

I will test again tonight.

IO for salt mix.

Plenty of flow in tank. Very little sand in tank. I built a spot in my tank for refugium but have nothing in it or light as of now. If you click on my house I have pictures of my sump. I also have a Pin Point PH meter but need a new probe.

what's the total volume of water in your system and how much two part are you using?

90 gal tank with 40 breeder sump. I'm thinking it to be about 120gal volume. Not sure on volume calculator. Dosing 25 ML daily Also 50lbs plus of LR. Lots of swimming room for fish.

Also tank running warm 81. Set up in family room of house (basement). No windows of any use. I'm also running a dehumidifier.

crank up your skimmer then and make sure the surface of the tank is really churning

you are under supplied with live rock--you should have between 100and 150 lbs of live rock in that system to control the nitrates but in the meantime start feeding a whole less flake food.

Skimmer running good... lots of junk.

Surface is crystal clear... no cloudiness. Side view of tank very clear.

Will do less flake food... might have been over feeding a little.

I'm not a big fan of tons of LR in set up. I was kicking it around about adding more. Now I will when I get some extra funds.

A friend of mine feels the same so he has most of thier live rock in a remote tank in the basement. Something I'm thinking of doing with our big build when we get a house.

Get one of those pond liners, fill it with a bunch of live rock and plumb it so that the drain from the display goes into the live rock and then flows into the sump to be skimmed...or something along those lines...maybe the live rock pond would be plumbed like a refugium off the return. Still working on the design.

thanks for your help Chris--appreciated

Tangleweed--get your chemistry stablized with the 2 part before adding anymore live rock to the system.
