Mine definitly pulls water, watch food flakes get sucked in daily.

What you are seeing is a lower intake for the over flow. as stated the over flow is made of glass with a black acrylic sheild over it. in the front part of the over flow there is about 1/4" gap between the acrylic and the glass. when the system is running the water running over the top of the over flow will creat a syphon effect and will draw water in from the bottom and pull it to the top and into the over flow. with the system shut off the way its made there would be no way for it to drain your tank down! the system works really well on my 150!

Agree, planning on a 120 or 150 upgrade in a few years from now.

Is everyone running the stock overflow system? Or are you converting these to herbie?

Do they all come with 3 holes in the overflow now?

From my understanding when talking to the sales guy, is that this is their new style of tank. Whether or not this carries over to all sizes, I don't know. I'm going to go to their warehouse and pick it up, if I meet the guy I'll make sure to ask some questions and relay them back into here.

So I go in to pick up a 120g, and I walk out with a 150g 😃. He made me an offer I couldn't refuse. The 150g I grabbed had 3 holes in the overflow. They currently do not have any 3 hole 120g tanks at the moment. He said They should have some in the next 6 weeks.

In regards to the the newer style tanks: the 90g, 120g, and 150g will now come with 3 holes drilled for a 1" bulkhead in the overflow.

So I guessing the 90 gallon they just shipped me today is the old style with a 1 inch and half inch.

From what he told me, those are in stock. You should probably ask him.

I responded to his email and he said that they only have the 150's right now. What is the benefit of having the 3rd hole? Just so that you can have the return concealed within the overflow?

it allowes you to use a herbi style drain system

I've seen someone on here that uses the 2 holes as the herbie drain and emergency and plumbs the returns back over the top of the tank. What are teh thoughts on this, since I know the one i'm getting will have 2 holes. Uses stock, or use herbie?

honestly its really up to you. i use the stock setup on my 150 and i rebuilt the stand pipe to a "super durso" and its tuned to the point you dont hear it. my buddy has a 120 that we drilled and did the herbi on and i dont think his makes anyless noise. but the sound level is going to depend on what your ambiant sound levels around your tank is like. i hear my mp40's over my drain

Do you have any pictures of your "super durso" set up?

I'm just getting back into the hobbie and had a 29 gallon about 7 or 8 years ago, so I'm new to the whole overflow and sump system. Is the emergency that the herbie uses necessary? Is there any need to increase the size of the return hole, as I've seen some do here?

So you use the 1" hole for the durso and the 1/2 hole for the return?

Pretty much spot on. My tank will be in my living room, so I'm aiming for silence. A herbie drain with a dc return pump and mp40qwd's, that's my plan. You can run a herbie with the two holes, but using a 1/2 for a main drain on anything over 75g is asking for trouble.

idk what size tank you are going with but for a dc pump my new dct6000 that i got for my 66 is super quiet for a pump i think.
