It is nice to see an update on this tank.

Did you ever have any problems since so many cleaning products are used in a bathroom?

It was nice to be able to make an update...with the lack of attentioned paid to this tank over the last year it could have easily gone the other way. I can't tell you how many times the top off ran dry and I wouldnt notice for a week.

As for the cleaning products....Not that I know of. I guess I wouldn't really know if it had a negative impact either unless it went really south. But as far as I can tell , other than a misplaced rubber ducky , no bathroom related foreign objects entered the tank.

I'm really glad to hear that Jeff. I guess if something had happened tue to bleach or windex, you would have told us how it affected the tank, skimmer, and livestock. That's pretty much what I meant.

Are you going to give it a good cleaning and post new pictures so we can see in it better?

The mirror is mostly cleaned with water only. Occassionally I will spray some newspaper with windex (outside in the hallway) and give it a once over but no chemicals (except those that escape the human body during the normal use of the room!) are allowed to be sprayed into the air. So to this day I have no adverse situations due to chemicals.

BTW, I think you missed the last picture...that's the after picture once I trimmed everything and cleaned the glass. I basically started over (except nowI have a basement fulll of frags).

Jeff

Oh! I thought you were joking around and had posted a picture from the beginning, not that you were restarting it now. Wow, you really pounced on that tank.

Man i couldnt do a tank like this cause if i did i would never leave the bathroom! Side question do you have any heat issues from the tank being in the bathroom? i take VERY hot baths and showers and my bathroom gets really hot while im in there. Just wondering? Looks AWESOME i would do a Huge overkill fuge/sump if i had the room but alas i dont so im stuck with a 55g display, 18g fuge and 14.5g sump.

With the bulk of the water in the cooler basement I find that temps in the tank very stable even if the room is fogged up. And even in the summer my heaters spend a significant amount of time doing their jobs.

And yes, I usually spend more time in there doing my business and watching the tank while reading Calfo's book on coral propagation then I need to

Jeff

And yes, melev, I really jumped on it....using a 3/4" cold chisel

However, with a few minutes work (and a chisel/hammer combo) you can start over:

The funny thing is that 80% of the overgrowth was on that top rock. Of course now I have tons of frags.

My next project is to replace the plumbing as it is all encrusted on the inside with calcification from when I was dosing baking soda and it is killing my flow. At least I think that's the problem.

Ok im not the tang police but i gotta say im a bit Peeved I want a Hippo and a yellow tang but i refuse to get them because my 4ft long 55g tank isnt big enough for them, those fish need at least an 8ft long tank for swim room Both can get to be 12inches long or bigger and to cram them into a little 26g Bowfront No MATTER WHAT THE TOTAL VOLUME is just plain wrong and CRUEL!

I respect your right to voice that opinion and hope you'll just leave it at us agreeing to disagree on this point.

Now on to more important matters: Does everyone eventually experience a decrease in flow due to build up in the pvc tubing or is just more inherent in systems with sumps that are a level below (and therefore have longer runs of PVC)?

Yes, it will decrease as more and more stuff builds up in the plumbing. Weatherson posted pictures about a year ago showing the inside of some of his pipes and it was rather amazing.

Wow, I doubt I could find it that easily. You might either send a PM to Weatherson, or perhaps check www.weatherson.com to see if he posted them on his site. If you find 'em, post the link here for others that want to see the blockage.

Have you cleaned the SCWD lately? They can crud up real fast and really slow down flow.

That piece of crap nuked itself in 6 months. I thought it might have been from calcium deposits so I cut the thing open and it was clean as a whistle...just a broken piece of plastic.

I took a look down the return spout last night and noticed that the sides of the pipe are no longer the nice smooth surface we get with new PVC...now I'm no fluid dynamics engineer but I can only imagine what's going along the 15' of pvc tubing that I use. I guess I'll try swapping out the return lines this weekend and see what happens.

Jeff

Oh and I ordered a 1" SCWD...let's see if that fairs better than the 3/4" version.

Thanks, Rich. That's because its filled with dwarfs

I'll post a pic with clean glass later as my 'nimble' just came in the mail. It looks pretty cool. I hope it works as half as well as everyone says.

There is still no 26 bow like your 26 bow any where else!

Is that lion new? How's it doing in your reef?

Hey Bax!

I've had the lion for about 2.5 months and it seems to be fine. I know they will eat anything that they can fit into their mouth but I don't keep shrimp and everything else in my tank is too big for a meal.

Once and a while it gets caught up in the flow and it looks like a sail boat fighting against the wind but for the most part it sticks to the middle front of the tank where the flow is more turbulent but not as powerful.

How's your tank doing?

Jeff

My 26 bow is currently a QT, but when I redo my sump room I may plum it into the system and do something with it like a clown anem or fuzzy lion tank, I don't know yet? Since it will eventually be connected to a 550 gallon total sysetm (once my 220 is up and running) maybe I'll put a tang in it just to hear the Tang Police scream!!!

Aside from a minor Alk issue due to my CO2 bottle running dry, the current 120 main is doing just fine! Thanks

quick update

The 1" SCWD was a bust...what a POS. I ended up moving the pump for the closed-loop up to right below the tank so now I have the (almost) full flow of the 70RL working for me. It's pretty intense. I will probably order a Super Squirt or a Vortech sometime in the near future to convert from turbulence to wave motion.
