Hey Chicago,will you still need 4 fittings to get the coverage on your tank and is the extra power just to get some decent par on the bottom. I got 60 on mine.

Have just ordered mine, 120w,the extra grunt would probably be nice, although the extra $100 per fitting makes me wonder. I am not as deep as you.

Can someone explain beam angle versus optics.

The light will be on 4x2x2. I've been in touch with twilight and I'm about ready to order but i need to know what is best for my tank.

I'm going to order a mix of royal blue, blue and a few violet. I need help with the white. what temp should I go with. I would like the light to be 14k-20k. is 2:1 the way to go or 1:1? I don't think i'll go with red or green. do you think the red and green will make a difference? I would rather not sacrifice blue or white, your thoughts?

The beam angle is the spread the led will initially put out. It is usually 120-140 degrees and very wide. Optics kind of work like a magnifying glass, focusing that wide beam into a narrower area, while increasing the strength of the light. You want that strength to penetrate a deeper tank. That's the non-technical oversimplified answer.

2:1 should be fine. I prefer multiple colors of whites to enhance the spectrum. Green is not really needed, and a few reds and violets enhance color.

I also picked up a new Apollo SolarBlast fixture last night and posted a review in the other thread. Until these companies make something Apex compatible, and with the same led bin quality, I think its the best choice available for Apex users right now.

Great thanks for the info, I'm in contact with Twilight for 2 lights. I'm ready to buy I just need to work out the details of the leds I want.

I'll let you know the outcome when i make my decision.

I would do 2 with blue white and maybe 5 violet bulbs. and I would do 90 degree optics. without optics you would have waste at just 4-5 inches above the water. i have a 60 cube which is half of your tank and i ended up buying optics because i don't like the spill from the standard 120 degree's.

so you are suggesting the bridgelux leds are better in the Apollo fixture
than the fob d120 boxes? by how much?

I believe so, but I'd need a PAR meter to confirm. Not all Bridgelux leds are created equal, or Crees for that matter. You can't really tell by just looking at them.

New Warranty info from Evergrow. I really like that they'll include extra leds for free with an order, if you want to change the color or replace a few. They'll cover shipping year 1 and they have a US distributor. Awesome!

They were purchased from Evergrow. The DIY option I believe is like $15. A few weeks back they were running a free DIY special. I have the list of LEDs they offer but its at home. The schematic I just did on MS paint. Feel free to use it. I just emailed it to them and they built it exactly.

Wow that is pretty cool about the free led's. I am surprised they include violet as those are $0.50 extra. I will admit I had a slight issue with one of my lights where one of the dimmers didn't dim just full power. They responded immediately and sent me detailed instructions on how to open it up and fix the problem I am still not sure exactly what was wrong (I just switched the power supplies) so suspect a wire connect came loose. No big deal and was pretty easy to work on. The inside looks real clean on these lights. All the wires were tied up and there was wax on the connections so they can tell if you mess with them. They also mentioned the 3 year warranty to me and said to contact them anytime. I still stay in touch with them and have given them some requests on items to order.

If anyone is interested I am working now on the openreefs.com project and hope to make these lights eventually work with the controllers.

I made my Nova A4 into an Apex controllable one. It requires replacing the drivers, and re-wiring of the fans.

I'm not sure of the exact specs of the d120 driver, but you would need:

2 PWM dimming drivers
around 80-100 volts each (if they are wired in a series connection)
600-630mah
~60watts each driver

I bought the custom drivers off aliexpress too. It's a little bit of a pain, but it is possible.

One with 90 degree optics should work just fine.

Eshine makes some nice looking lights, but they are expensive, and their warranty is suspect. One person here reported having problems trying to get a broken controller replaced. He was just given the run around for awhile.

I see one plus with evergrow is their warranty you posted for 1st year coverage here in the US.

Twilight has programmable controller I believe (but that may be just one more thing to worry about breaking down with no US support)?

What would be a good fixture for a 40B?

The ones that I ordered are for my 40 breeders. I am setting up two with another 40 breeder as the sump. The led's themselves are 90 degree but I got 90 degree optics anyways.

There are lots of options. The Evergrow lights are quality, and I was impressed with my Nova A4. I've since retrofitted it with Cree leds as a DIY project. The case is coated steel. It wont rust with the coating on it. Communication was great, and they have a nice warranty setup. I highly recommend them.

The twilight one has a controller built into it, but no one has received one yet to test. All of our orders are recent. Seems like a great option too.

Gehl and Greensun are also good companies. I'm sure there are more.

I run one over a 20L and i start getting drop offs outside of 24 inches.
