I would step up the water changes.
What is exactly is a "power filter" ? If it uses any "bio-balls" or something similar that could be added to them too.

I have an intake tube connected to a powerhead that sucks water in and then to another intake tube then back out to the tank. In the filter, I have 2 filter pads a black one and a white one and just 2 other sponges that I'm seeding for emergencies. Is there anything I can stuff inside that can help control the nitrates or not like carbon or ceramic rings?

So I am just getting started and the more I read the more I think I want an aggressive tank. I currently have a 350 gallon FOWL with a pair of maroon clowns, a vlamingi tang, a royal gramma and an engineer blenny. I would like to get a trigger, a golden tail morray eel, lion fish, etc.
I am sure the royal gramma would be eaten pretty quick so would move him. What about the compatibility with the others I have? Also, would my cleaner and peppermint shrimp be eaten? Any other suggestions would be greatly appreciated. |

While a vlamingi tang is one of my very favorite fish, your tank will eventually make him seem too large (even in a 350 which I also have). But if it were me, I would consider a pair of crosshatch triggers as I find them fascinating and outrageously gorgeous. I would skip the lionfish as it limits what else you can put in there. But, you might consider instead an interesting frogfish (what kind of depends on your taste). A Christmas Island Imperator would also have to be on my list. My personal taste is to have fewer fish but spectacular ones.

Hi, i've been keeping salt since i was 15 and now that i''m moving on to college i've sold (trying to sell the last of the rock) both of my fifty fives and my previous nano crashed
but, I'm bringing my 20 gallon nano with me (my first tank forever and always) and it's equipment: Eshopps PSK-100H, 1 Koralia one, 1 Koralia two and a Bak-Pak converted into a refugium. i may also bring a 20 gal. sump when i finally see what my dorm is like. it has (Just enough for hard corals) lights (SPS) and a DIY auto top off and DIY overflow i have a 4 stage RO/DI from my 55's so i plan on doing quite a few water changes. anyway, i've always gone up in tank size and my parents have always fully supported my "crack addiction" with their hearts and when they could wallets. so, now i'm pretty sure i'm overstocking my tank by quite a bit...: well here's my list: PANDA CLOWN GOBY or YASHA PRAWN GOBY HEILFRICH'S FIREFISH PORCELAIN CRAB BLUE STRIPE PIPEFISH (?- Foster and Smith said 30 gal. this http://www.nano-reef.com/forums/inde...howtopic=74703 said 20 gal.... any advice?) well i'm kind of looking for a challenge so if i had to chose two between the four i would probably prioritize: 1. panda clown goby, 2. heilfrich's firefish, 3. blue stripe pipefish, 4. yasha prawn goby if this list isn't ok it would be really helpful if you would recommend a new list based on my priorities^^. thx!!!!

the other thing i was worried about is that i do have two acropora growing in my tank but they do grow VERY SLOWLY. i know it's because of my lights. i'm not worried about the coral but the fish. do you know how much damage the panda goby does to the coral??

i grew them from frags so they're 6" tall and 2" wide same for the other one.
i plan on only getting one panda... hehe.... so do you think coral damage will be a problem??

What's your thoughts on anthias in a 75 gal reef tank?
There was a orange one with a purple eye that I was looking at today at the lfs. You have any idea which one I might be referring to. I can't seem to find it. Thanks |

Currently have a 15g with 19lbs Tucani live rock, live black sand, Marineland reef capable 24" LED light, Hydor Koralia 240 pump, 50w heater, and an over-tank trickle filter. Current readings - 76 degrees, 0 ammonia, nitrates, nitrites, 8.4 ph, 0.0125 sg.
Went to the LFS on Thursday the 10th to get some of my cleaner crew. Picked up 5 Astrea snails (major PITA, turning them back over all the time) 5 assorted hermit crabs, 3 Nassarius snails, and 1 small emerald crab. Lost 1 astrea this morning that hadn't been doing well from the beginning - first question should I take it out or let my crabs feast as they have been? Emerald hasn't found it yet but the hermits have it half gone already (it was the smallest snail). As I'm pretty noob to saltwater, I have no idea what species of anything else I want to put in the tank (been researching nonstop and my head is spinning). My local petco is pretty gross, but found a much cleaner one closer to my LFS (hour away) that has an adorable scooter blenny. My husband and I fell in love with it (I've always wanted one) and if it's still there will probably get it this upcoming Thursday. Did a ton of research on them and how to get copepods...only to see tons of copepods in my tank this morning! Is it advisable to get this as my first fish? or do I need more established copepods? Also planning on getting more of my cleaning crew (at the very least some more nassarius, LFS told me I needed more than double of everything of what I currently have..but that seemed like overkill for the small amount of food in my newly established aquarium). What other fish would be compatible with what I have? (likely planning a pair of blennies and maybe 2 more fish that swim more) Not very keen for clowns or anything even remotely semi-aggressive...or that jumps lol. Any advice on some first corals to get? (waiting a bit on these) Really have my heart set on a pumping xenia and maybe a feather duster or christmas tree worms but that's about it as far as planning...I like variety, and really don't want everything to die off because of a wrong addition. I don't have a QT yet but might set up a spare 10g for one if I can find room. Is it advisable to put in some Red Smooth Leaf Kelp or would it be eaten quickly or grow out of control? Really like the look of it and sites that sell it don't seem to give the right info or conflict with other sites (this seems to be my problem for everything I've been looking into). Last question, on my live rock I have light green and dark purple coraline algae, at least I did at the beginning...Now I'm noticing all kinds of colors and textures popping up all over the place. If someone could direct me to the right place to ID all this stuff that would be great. Sorry for all the questions, Hopefully some of you are bored enough to answer all of them I'm pretty noob when it comes to species and what goes with what. Thanks a bunch! cliffnotes - I'm noob, what am I able to put in my first reef tank? |

this one is for Todd. I have a lost a 5 inch sailfin, 5 inch powder blue, a clown fish and a pj cardinal over the last month since I added a green carpet anemone. These fish literally dissapear over night. The clown and the pj were always surface swimmers on my reef so I can't see the carpet catching them. I would think the 5 inch tangs would be too large for the carpet to engulf overnight????
Your thoughts or any one elses too, of course

Seriously it is almost impossible for a fish to jump out of my system. Both the surface and the overflow are covered with egg crate. I've seen a wrasse go through the egg crate but not a five inch fish. The fish room is very small so if a couple of 5 inch fish hit the surf I am sure we would have smelled them

Steve beat me too it -- and I am sorry for the loss of your fish.
While I have had relatively good luck with S. Haddonsi (( only lost 5 fish in 12+ years to them )), they are known fish eaters, and would not be surprised at all if it pulled in a 5 inch fish. Their sting is shockingly strong (( my hand will swell up from it )) and they are like velco (( could fully lift one out of the water when it was stuck to me )) -- I now will only touch them with gloves.

first i'll start by saying hello everyone...Im new to the forum! I've had fresh water tanks for a few years now for my kids. Now im movin on up to somthin for me! SALTWATER...YAY. anyway, this is what i have so far:
29g tank, just got 40lbs of sand, and 40 lbs of dry rock from Marco rocks. Went to the LFS and got pre cycled water that they took from the tanks they have there. so that cut off a couple of weeks for me. ive had it running for about a week now. So yesterday i went and got 1 small live rock from LFS to seed the corraline. it had some green bubble algea on it when i got it home, i have sense taken that off, but theres also somthin else that im not sure what it is on it. Looks like some kind of spongy bugger like stuff. (pic below) any help figuring out what it is. second. what should i start stocking the tank with first. and how long should i wait before doing so. i was thinking about a britle star, then when algea starts up...getting a lawnmower blenny. a couple of clowns and maybe a blue damsel to start. then gradually add corals etc. (id love to have a tang, but i know i know the tank isn't big enough) any feedback would be great!!! thanks in advance -Mike |
