Excuse my ignorance, but isn't Darwin suppose to be saltwater chocodile there? I remembered that a black ocellaris collector got eaten a few years ago.

Maybe that's the rumour ...

Yeah we have all the nasties over here. The person who got taken was a collector over to the East of us.

Saltwater crocodiles and box jellyfish are the main ones to be wary of.

I did not appreciate the significant of this from the very first post. Wild black & white A. ocellaris. I love to get my hand on those clowns like you. Thanks Lewy

At least the crocs will smile at you. The box jellies you'd be lucky to even see. When I went to QLD I was reading the list of nasties off to a friend of mine (box jellies, cone shells, crocs, sea snakes, etc.etc.etc.) and they were like "why do you want to go there again?" That was right after the Steve Irwin tragedy.
I can't imagine anywhere I'd rather live. I must see Darwin next time I take the trip... that and PNG.

I'm very surprised to hear this. Everything I have read has indicated how critical it is to not let the sponges be exposed to air??

Thank you for the pictures and insight to your part of the world.

Maybe Mr Sponge croaked it after the photo was taken?

I'm sure you remember exactly where you took the photo

Oh, and on a side note, Darwin is a beautiful city. I drove the Circumference of Australia in an old Holden Commodore about 10 years ago. Amazing country!

Unfortunately I wasn't into marines then so I didn't appreciate the reefs just as much as I would now.

Great thread !

Hard to remember where I took the photo. But there were several other sponges in the area.

I detect some sarcasm in Deepseanige's comment . I was actually serious about what I have heard about those sponges. It would be great to hear that some are able endure effects of low tide.
