I just started last week---a 120 gal that was absolutely loaded with bryopsis. Looking forward to this business venture--its something I thorougly enjoy. With my teaching experience---I also teach my clients what to do as I service the tanks--something that is not done very much by LFS's.

http://reefkeeping.com/issues/2005-12/rhf/index.php Adding Epsom salts (magnesium sulfate heptaydrate) to boost magnesium, for example, raises sulfate more than it does magnesium. Likewise, adding calcium chloride to boost calcium reduces sulfate if salinity is maintained. Nevertheless, so much sulfate is present in seawater that such changes occur slowly over time. Under anoxic conditions (ORP less than about 0 mV) some bacteria can use sulfate to metabolize organic material, producing hydrogen sulfide (H2S) as a byproduct (Figure 1, middle bottom). Hydrogen sulfide is the most reduced form of sulfur present in seawater, and areas of negative redox values are known as reducing zones. In reef aquaria the reduction of sulfate can occur in many places, such as under sand or inside live rock. It also can take place in denitrators if their flow is low enough that the nitrate is depleted while organic material is still available for decomposition. Hydrogen sulfide produced in anoxic regions can produce several possible outcomes. One is to diffuse into more oxic (aerobic) regions, even into the water column itself, where it can be toxic to organisms. In the water column it can be oxidized to sulfate or other sulfur species (elemental sulfur (S), sulfite (SO3-) and others; Figure 1, right). Such oxidation reactions are catalyzed both by soluble metals such as iron and by light. Hydrogen sulfide also can combine with metals such as iron (Fe++) to precipitate as black iron sulfide (Figure 1 bottom; FeS and FeS2). This blackness is the telltale sign of hydrogen sulfide formation that can be seen in anoxic seawater sediments, although similar appearing black precipitates may be formed from other materials." However when I suggested I was doing it until I got rid of half a pail of IO mix, I was told that would be okay I just bought a pail of H2Ocean---magnesium is about 1350 in there so I won't need to dose mag anymore

Capn, yesterday I collected some nice cold Atlantic ocean water.
It was full of seaweed and sand because I collected it from the surf, but my fish are in for a nice surprise on Memorial Day. Speaking of memorial Day, lets all remember what this special day was created for. Have a great Holiday

Good choice, if I was gonna switch, that would be the one. But for me, my LFS is right around the corner, they dont have much, but I get a pretty good deal on all my supplies. That's the chart I used to compare my test, then the reef calculator to make my NSW. So in my case, I need to dose something other than Epsom Salt to raise my Mag. I'll do a little research on that. Thank's again Cap.

you might consider using the epsom salts to bring the mag up to the desired levels and then maintain it with tech M since it takes alot to move the level of mag up but little to maintain the level. I was doing a 40 gal water change every two weeks with IO and that was what was throwing off my mag level so quickly

I love your kids and I salute them.
Capn do you want to buy some nice "carpet Mojanos" I mean anemones? This mojano split twice and they are the largest mojanos I have ever seen at about 2" tall. this one has been in the same place for a year or two and we have an understanding so I let them live as long as they behave. The one on the right is learning to play the piano.

Unfortuanately this little trick doesn't work so well for apitasia since they aren't as dependant on light as mojanos. Jeremy |

I ran some test today with API kits.
SGC - 1.026 dKH - 10 CAL - 520+ PH - 8.1 Meter Read NO3 - 5.0 PO4 - 0 I can't find a way how to calculate a lower dosage of the B-Ionic. Cal is pretty high should I cut my dosing in half? Started dosing at 25ml. Am I over dosing? My tank is a 90 gal with 40 gal sump with no less than 20 gal of water in it. What would my tank and sump volume be. I think I'm missing something on the calculator
