87 degrees??? ... i hope you meant 78 degrees.
Those values look alrite i might suggest to add some magnesium. I believe TJ uses a 50/50 mix of coralife/instant ocean so his values will be inflated.

Yes I also use a Ca Reactor, but it is not tied in or linked with my Kalk Reactor. The Ca Reactor is on 24/7/365... My Kalk Reactor only has water move through it when the ATO turns on.

hey TJ, i was wondering something. i tested a fresh batch of my instant ocean water change water and was curious if the values i got are anywhere near what you got when you tested yours? I tested at 1.026 and 87 degrees.

CA. 420ppm (API)

dKH. 13.8 (SALIFERT)

ph. 8.2 (SALIFERT)

MG. 1110ppm (SALIFERT)

i thought i recall you testing your fresh salt water?
Those aren't far off. Instant Ocean and Reef Crystals post a very high alkalinity (12 dKH), but people frequently report getting batches with values like you tested.

The posted values for Instant Ocean at 1.0265 are:

Ca: 350 ppm
Alk: 12 dKH
Mag: 1070 ppm

Correct. I still use the 50/50 blend. The values posted above are what makes Instant Ocean a great candidate for mixing with another salt in order to hit the sweet spot.

87 is right, pretty high huh!

that was just a bucket of fresh salt water but my tank does typically run at about 82 degrees. its a little higher that i like but ill deal with that issue sooner or later?

thanks TJ, i thought that the calcium values i tested were a bit higher than the what you tested? i didnt know it was that far off though. im going to test another batch from the same bag to see if i come up with the same values? i dont entirely trust the API test kit, personally...

Prelude to pics...

I'm not very happy with the current tank situation. Due to the response I'm getting out of a lot of my corals (SPS and LPS), I believe there's too much light over the tank... and a lot of my corals are suffering. So I need to purchase a conduit fitting and raise the light a few more inches at a time until I can find the sweet spot. Nothing has died at this point, but a lot of stuff just doesn't look good right now. As a result of almost losing my AE Pumpkin Patch Chalice, I moved my chalice collection into the shade, under the rock overhang on the left side of the tank.

Also, the nuisance algae situation is continuing to get worse. So I'm just riding that one out for now.

However, all is not negative... A few of my SPS corals posted their first noticeable growth in a LONG time. Mainly my Blue Tort, Stubby Pink Birdsnest, and thin branched Teal Acropora (not sure of the species name).

Oh... and Red Planaria Flatworms have gone gang busters in my tank for some unknown reason... They're EVERYWHERE! I haven't added anything in a long time, so I'm not sure what the deal with the explosion is?

Thanks. It's been growing pretty fast since I upped the lighting. The base still has a brownish hue to it, but all the new growth is nice and purple. Also, I have 2 hitchhiker corals in the tank that are slowly coming back. There was a little encrusting left over where I broke them off when I took the rock out of my 90g tank, and sure enough both are growing again. One is a super purple digi, and the other is a purple rim monti cap.

Thanks Mitchell.

Hopefully I can figure out what's going on with the lighting, otherwise I may be forced to get rid of, or set up another tank for my chalices and palys. As a start, I reduced my photo period back to 6hrs today.

Sorry to hear about your algae issues, but I'm sure with your skill and dedication that you will get it all straightened out. The pics look great like always. Thanks for keeping us in the loop.
