David, sometimes I take it from shore and sometimes I get it on my boat. You need to get that matter out of it. You can filter it through a coffee filter or if you have one a diatom filter. After that you could just check temp and salinity and dump it in.

Thanks for answering, I just finished with testing. Here's what I got-
SG 1.024
Mg 1000 ppm
Ca 350 ppm
Alk 6.5 dkh or 2.04 meg/l
PO4 und
NO3 und

Wouldnt filtering it be counter productive, I thought the reason for using NSW was to introduce populations of plankton not usally found in our tanks.

David, that is not the reason for using NSW. Where you live the plankton will not live more than a few hours in a tropical tank. You want the bacteria and other disolved chemicals in NSW. You want to get the floating matter and algae out of there. If you want pods or amphipods which will live in there collect those seperately under rocks on a beach.

Wow, your tank is by far my favorite that I have seen around the internet. I love the bottles, and even the can, though i think one would need the bottles for the can to fit in. I just started a 12g tank, now I want something bigger!!! Maybe I will go to the local antique store and see if they have any bottles with interesting shapes. Sure its not the same as something found underwater, but I live in colorado so the ocean is a bit of a drive... Thanks for the pictures and I look forward to seeing more..

Boosteedvdub, thanks. I was stationed in Colorado for a few months, in Colorado Springs. I remember going to a place not too far from there, "Cave of the Winds" At the bottom of the mountain we found a small cave. We crawled all the way in and thought we were the only humans that ever went there. About 20 yards in we were surrounded by old beer cans.

shew! i cant stand bud light. its like my tank, all water! lol! JK, i quit drinking one year on 7-26-05. i had to, my liver and i were fighting all the time!
the babies still hang in the rocks, theyre growing slower now. i feed cyclop-eeze, brine, and phyto to the tank for obvious reasons, they get their choice. i have seen as many as 12 so far. its hard to keep up with them they jet everywhere. the tang and racoon still search for them on occasion. im keeping them bloated.
ill keep in touch, be safe, happy, & REEF-ON!

Reefnetworth, I don't drink the stuff, I don't even drink beer. I am a Vodka man, sometimes Scotch.
Glad the babies are doing well. I remember when I used to occasionally raise them, I used to get all excited. I still would but I don't do it anymore. I don't even have a pair of anything except pipefish. They spawn all the time but I don't try to raise them. They are so small that I can't even see them.
We are going to Sicily soon and since my fish only eat fresh or frozen food I am a little concerned about leaving my tank (I will though) I have someone to feed them but they know nothing about fish,
Have a great day.
Paul

Paul, that is a very interesting tank. I set my fist marine tank up in 1974 and it had a reverse flow UG with 2 air driven corner protein skimmers.

I splashed out for a Vortex diatom filter 30 years ago and stlil used that occasionally for years later until I lost one of the screws that hold the pump and lid assembly on top of the jar. That diatom filter would leave the water as clear as air, about the only thing that clears water to the same extent is ozone. My first marine tank was FO, well before anyone had thought of Live Rock or keeping corals or any other inverts for that matter. That first tank was a very successful FO tank though.

Gazpep, I am on my third or fourth diatom filter. I don't know how anyone has a reef without one. As you know, your tank in 1974 was set up like all tanks then. I never had a problem so it is still set up that way.
By the way, I started my SCUBA diving in Sydney in 1970 or 71. I was on R&R from Nam. I stayed in Kings Cross. The Sydney Opera House was under construction.
Have a great day.
Paul

Yes Paul B, Kings Cross was a bit of a magnet to the US marines on rec leave from Vietnam. Whisky Au Go Go was one of the first, if not the first disco in Sydney...and the Bourbon & Beefsteak was another popular attraction. I spent quite a few Saturday nights around there.....

Funny thing about Sydney Harbour you can often see tropical marine fish there in the summer months - they come down on the current from the GBR, just like they showed in Finding Nemo, but by March they pretty much perish with the start of colder seasons. The harbour is actually much cleaner today than it was in the 70's after they shut down all of the chemical plants that were operating in lower reaches of the Parramatta river.

Anyway,my old '74 tank is long gone....amazingly yours continues.

Gazpep I went to the Texas Tavern. I am sure that is long gone now too.
When I was looking for my hotel I walked down to a busy intersection and since I am from New York I figured I would wait for the light and cross the street. There was no light and I couldn't figure out how to cross the street. Two Australian gentlemen came up to me and one was trying to tell me something but I couldn't understand him at all. He had a heavy Aussie accent but I realized he was trying to get me to help me to get this blind man across the street. He left him with me and now I really couldn't cross the street. After a few minutes the blind man said to me "whats the problem Mate?" I told him I can't figure how to cross the street. He said "no problem Mate" and he lifted his cane and dragged me into the street. Cars were going behind us and around us. Finally we got to the other side where he thanked me and left. Wouldn't you know, another blind guy wanted to go back across the street with me as a guide. Now I was back on the original side of the street and I had to look for another blind guy to cross me back. I finally realized there was a school for the blind on the corner.

Yeah great story Paul B , I bumped into a couple of blind blokes down there recently and they're still talking about you.....you obviously made quite an impression.

The Texas Tavern is gone, quite a few changes since the early 70's as you would imagine.

The girl I was with there (before I was married) brought me to the Texas Tavern and I asked what she wanted to drink. She told me "a Harvey Wallbanger". At the time I never heard of a Harvey Wallbanger and figured it was an Australian thing and they would all laugh at me. But there is such a drink, as a matter of fact, it is now one of my favorite drinks.
When I got on the bus in Sydney right off the plane from Nam I was looking out the window all excited. That was in about 69 or 70 when mini skirts were first in fashion. I just spent ten months in a jungle without even seeing a road so the sights were enjoyable. (there were no wimen in combat in those days, but the monkeys were looking good) Anyway, this guy comes over to me and says "hey Mate, how do you like our birds". I looked all over and said I don't see any birds. He said "you know, the Birds" I looked again and thought, lights on but nobody's home. Then he said, "you know, the girls" Then I understood.

Hello Paul I love the looks of your tank! I too think of always going old school with my tank but I am still new to the whole saltwater thing and like you said the internet just confuses people. I look at all the different tanks and I am just amazed at all the different varities. I think "Wow I wish I coud do that". How often do you change water? My tank is 6 monthts od today and its really come along way. I also like to say Thank you or your time in the service, I too am a vet but from the gulf.

Hey Paul How long is your tank? Is it 6'? Does it bow in the middle? The reason I ask is I noticed you don't have a center brace for your tank. I just bought a used 150g that is an older tank and I noticed there is no cross braces anywhere. I was debating using it but thought it might be a problem but if you have had your's running for 35 years without one it gives me hope this tank is salvagable. The glass on my tank is 1/2 inch thick.
