Quick clown question; if you have no intention of ever attempting to bread clowns is it better to keep them singly or should they still be paired?

I love a species tank of a pair of clowns in a reef setting with a fancy carpet anemone and no other fish. They will show wonderful behaviors including bonding, breeding.

However, if you do keep a pair, once they bond and start breeding they become aggressive. Especially in a smaller tank, this becomes problematical. One by itself will not have this downside but without a host anemone is a rather uninteresting fish.

I have a 29 gallon FOWLR with 10 gallon sump and 55 lbs of LR. I have an emerald crab and some snails and a brittle star doing well. I want to get a pair of small ocellarus clowns a royal gramma and one other fish. I was thinking about either a firefish or a blenny. Would this work ? Should I wait until my LR is a little more established before adding a blenny ? will a firefish and royal gramma get along ? If the firefish isn't a good idea, what would a nice colorful easier to care for suggestion be ? Eventually I might go reef.

One other question. I don't want to add an anemone until my tank is stable for a year or so. If I add an anemone will clownfish, who have been in the tank for a year without it, interact with it ?

Clownfish, once sexually mature will become aggressive although A. occelaris is one of the least aggressive. They may take over your sized tank. For an anemone, you will need good lighting. However, clownfish are very particular and may or may not associate with your anemone. Get Joyce Wilkerson's book Clownfish for a list of which anemones will work with which species of clown. What lighting do you have?

A blenny should normally be added to a mature tank. A firefish and royal gramma will normally get along but in a smallish tank, it is less predictable.

I hope if things go well to move up to a bigger (100+ tank if things go well...)
Sounds good. I'll start with the clowns and royal gramma and then add the firefish, then. Should I add the least aggressive fish first ?

Least aggressive is always first. In your case, that is firefish.

I have two question

I have a 80 gallon tank with 20 gallon sump. It has a Current Fission protien skimmer 225gal. I have to compact 3 foot light one is Actinic the other is 6500K.

I have a bubble anenome that looks really good most the time, but then will shrivle up and almost completely close at other point. I thas eaten about three times since I have got it. ( about every other day.) Am I over or under feeding it?

The second is The current fission skimmer is pretty loud. Someone suggested adding a mesh mod to quiet it would that help?

This thread is primarily about fish since that is my expertise. What kind of lighting did the anemone come from?

Hello. I am Pat and will be accepting ALL advise from EVERYONE, LOL
I am brand new to SW and have a road ahead for sure.
Fir now I will be setting up for FOWLR, and have a 29 gallon tank about 1 and 1/2 " Live sand and prolly not enough LR but for now it seems fine.
(I bought the set up from a youngin who appears to know quite a bit)
I have three power heads (2 that are not missing theier brackets, so...) and an old whisper 60 double sided filter (NOISEY, if I can't quiet it down will get a new one, MAIN REASON I AM ASKING RIGHT NOW) I want to know a good filter to get.
I have a couple in mind but was very much confused afer readinbg a buit mnore about the testimonials of them.
Marinetime pro Emporer 400 for one. (got the idea it is loud)
Whisper x70 and a aquaclear with 300+ GPH like the rest of these. (got the impression it move TOO much water for my tank, but I also I read for my tank that would be very good.)
I Am new but not ignorant, I had Fresh water for years a long time ago, and I KNOW this is a different animal all together but I look forward to having a few cool fish in there. Until I can get a 55 or bigger when I move out of my second floor apt.
SO how many fish will be not too many?
Cleaner shrimp (saw them at the store and tey are VERY cool) Few snails perhaps?
Crabs?
I have it running with Distilled water (For almost a week now) Have to get a new test kit, bought the wrong one and I seem to get fluctuating reading with my hydrometer.
I saw an INT THE TANK type, is that good?1.028 I think and 78 degrees/
I will post more and look for answers in a few hours.
THanks a bunch. Let me know what I forgot...

SO how many fish will be not too many?

As you noted, Saltwater and Fresh water are two completely different animals; however biological filtration works in a similar but not identical manner. So, for your tank, assuming you pick fish whose personalities go together, you can have about 4 smallish fish although not added altogether since you biological capacity needs to be developed. Towards this end, your first step is to get test kits for ammonia, nitrite, and nitrate. You should also have a refractometer. Learn to test and read your water before doing anything further

Cleaner shrimp (saw them at the store and tey are VERY cool) Few snails perhaps?
Crabs?

Generally I don't trust crabs but small blue legged hermits should be fine. Once your tank is totally cycled and stable, cleaner shrimp would be fine

I have it running with Distilled water (For almost a week now) Have to get a new test kit, bought the wrong one and I seem to get fluctuating reading with my hydrometer.
I saw an INT THE TANK type, is that good?1.028 I think and 78 degrees/

I would encourage a refractometer over a hydrometer and calibrated with Pinpoint solution to 1.0264. Keep your tank at 1.025/26

I will post more and look for answers in a few hours.
THanks a bunch. Let me know what I forgot...

Note that this particular thread is not a how to do it thread except with respect to marine fish. We will be happy to answer all questions about fish, but equipment and other issues should be separate questions in the New to the Hobby forum. If we tried to answer everything in this thread I would need to drink much more coffee.

Not nearly enough light for any hosting anemone.

Anemones are very particular and have particular light requirements; this is beyond the scope of this thread, however. Ask in the New to the Hobby Forum as a specific question about anemone requirements.

Size: Up to 29 inches -- IMO, it will get way too big for your tank. Not sure how many tanks are suitable for a fish that gets nearly 3 feet.

I am fairly new to all this and right now I'm running a 55g FOWLER (snowflake eel, Picasso trigger, clown trigger, and a v tail grouper) I have live sand with 55 lbs of live rock, aqueous 55 filter, 1 powerhead, and a red sea backpack skimmer.
I have just purchased a 230g (96"x32"x18") with a 50g sump, a Top Fathom TF 8 skimmer with a newer model collection cup, MantaRay pump, Aqua UV 57 watt 2" uv sterilizer, 75 GPD FIVE STAGE OCEAN WAVE RO/DI SYSTEM, a CoraLife light fixture holding 4 10,000k 96 watts and 4 actnics 96 watts with built in moonlight LEDs, (if needed i have 2 GLO T5 48" lighting systems, and a DIY stand. With all this I'm taking all suggestions on what else I might need to do a reef system. What can I take out of my 55g and put in my 230g and what fish/coral should I start off with? Preferably hardy livestock. Anyone and everyone feel free to respond because every suggestion will help.

I would stop listening to advice from that LFS. No more yellow tangs. One is sufficient. I would take out the remaining one and return it to the LFS.

I almost do not know where to start on this. If you want a reef system, pretty much none of your existing livestock should be transferred to your larger tank. In fact your small tank is dangerously stocked as it is with too much bioload and some incredibly aggressive fish.

Well then...guess I won't be transferring any of the fish. Both triggers are under 4" and the grouper is about 4.5". I may end up just turning the 55g into the reef tank.

Definitely doable and you can make a very nice reef tank with a 55g.

Okay...from my very first post you guys know that I don't even have my tank yet...but I have a list of fish that I would like. What I want to know, is how big should my tank be with this list and what order should I get them. I don't think my budget would allow me to go over a 55 gallon tank with a possible 20 to 30 gal sump/fuge and also allowing me to purchase two 10 gal quarantine tanks...one for fish and one for corals/invertabrates. Invertabrates...I would love to have a peppermint shrimp and snails, I was looking at emerald crabs...but hearing way too many horror stories on here. I would love to have some SPS corals and some Mushrooms. For My fish, becuase I have four kids who have all seen the famous Disney movie Finding Nemo...I have to have a Clownfish...I was looking at the Oceallarious because I have read that they are the most compatable in a smallish aquarium. I would like to have either one or two spotted cardinalfish. I also want a few blue green Chromis...would like to get that schooling effect -- or could I get that with the cardinal fish. I plan on purchasing Live rock and live sand to use that as a biological filter and to get a protein skimmer...I don't know all the ins and outs yet because I am still in the planning stages yet...but I don't want to kill my buddies...Oh, my kids have seen the red dragonette and are begging me for that and I told them it would at least be a year before we got that -- I'm hoping that there will be more tank breed species out there by then because I don't want a fish that was drugged with cyanide to begin with and I want to make sure that the tank is mature. I am taking this really slow (been thinking about a tank for over a year now) because the first thing I learned in my research was that slow usually is good...fast and you are going to be in a world of hurt. Anyway, any other ideas for fish or are the fish that I have planned good?

True. I don't trust crabs in general

I would love to have some SPS corals and some Mushrooms.

If you want lps or sps, don't put mushrooms in your tank as they are impossible to get rid of

For My fish, becuase I have four kids who have all seen the famous Disney movie Finding Nemo...I have to have a Clownfish...I was looking at the Oceallarious because I have read that they are the most compatable in a smallish aquarium.

One A. percula or A. ocellaris is no problem. Two has different issues

I would like to have either one or two spotted cardinalfish. I also want a few blue green Chromis...would like to get that schooling effect -- or could I get that with the cardinal fish.

No fish will school in your tank; chromis most likely will kill off the weakest so you end with one; cardinals (of the kind you would be able to keep) will not school or shoal and in fact eventually would pair up. But you could have a pair (M+F) of tank raised Bangaii cardinals.

I plan on purchasing Live rock and live sand to use that as a biological filter and to get a protein skimmer...I don't know all the ins and outs yet because I am still in the planning stages yet...but I don't want to kill my buddies...Oh, my kids have seen the red dragonette and are begging me for that

Sorry, that will not work unless you get a producing refugium

and I told them it would at least be a year before we got that -- I'm hoping that there will be more tank breed species out there by then because I don't want a fish that was drugged with cyanide to begin with and I want to make sure that the tank is mature.

Most fish you will look at are not cyanide caught; mandarins being the exception where many are

I am taking this really slow (been thinking about a tank for over a year now) because the first thing I learned in my research was that slow usually is good...fast and you are going to be in a world of hurt.

Slow is always good

Anyway, any other ideas for fish or are the fish that I have planned good?
