Snorvich -- thank you for your answers...I knew that a mandy would not work without a refugium...sorry I didn't make myself clear. So there is no way to really get a "school" of fish in the aquarium...so it would be better if I stick to two clownfish...and some bengaii or spotted Cardinals...could I get a dottyback or firefish as well?

One Firefish, absolutely. Most dottybacks are very aggressive with the exception of the Orchid dottyback (P. Fridmani) but definitely not a firefish and a dottyback.

This is not really a discussion thread. A pair of maroon clowns and an appropriate anemone (if you have the lights to support it) would be a wonderful species tank even in a 29 gallon tank. But you could put no other fish in that tank.

You are most welcome. If you decide to do this, the anemone you need is E. quadricolor which is the hardiest anemone for this species of clownfish, Premnas biaculeatus.

Putting together a wish list

I'm putting together a wish list and wondering if you the experts could provide some feedback.

First, the tank details:
- 90G AGA
- 30G sump
- NWB-150 skimmer
- 2x 250w MH
- 70lbs rock in display, 30lbs in sump/fuge

I'm looking for a mostly fish with a few corals, just something to give it a little color/realism.

As for the fish wish list, here's what I wrote down, please comment. If the skimmer needs to be replaced; not a problem.

Fish:
- 2 x Ocellaris Clowns
- Lawnmower Blenny
- 5 x Blue-Green Chromis
- Yellow Tang
- Picasso Trigger
- Flame Angel
- Green Mandarin

Is that mix even possible? Way too many fish? I see the Picasso is listed at 10" size on LiveAquaria, is that realistic given they list only 70G is needed for them?

The wife really wants 4 Oscellaris/Percs Clowns; I've read mixed posts ranging from 'if they're all introduced at the same time they'll be fine' to '4 clowns is a disaster'.

Your thoughts/comments are greatly appreciated.

Thanks.

Fish:
- 2 x Ocellaris Clowns Relatively peaceful compared to others
- Lawnmower Blenny
- 5 x Blue-Green Chromis I would skip these as they will likely willow themselves down to one; and there are much more interesting fish to use that bioload
- Yellow Tang Add last. But if you must have a tang, I recommend a chevron as yellows can be aggressive as they age
- Picasso Trigger Triggers and reef tanks don't really mix; pretty fish, but aggressive
- Flame Angel Wait until your tank is mature and has algae for grazing
- Green Mandarin Again, wait until your tank is about 9 months old

Is that mix even possible? Way too many fish? I see the Picasso is listed at 10" size on LiveAquaria, is that realistic given they list only 70G is needed for them?

I don't really think that 70 g is realistic unless you have a FOWLR and that is the only potentially aggressive fish

The wife really wants 4 Oscellaris/Percs Clowns; I've read mixed posts ranging from 'if they're all introduced at the same time they'll be fine' to '4 clowns is a disaster'.

You get two clowns of the same species in your sized tank. Perhaps in a 500 gal tank, but my friend had to unpair his two sets back down to one each of two species. World War III is an understatement

Your thoughts/comments are greatly appreciated.

Always glad to help

Thanks.

Steve,
Thanks for the comments. Any recommendations to replace the bioload of those chromis while still giving some color to the tank?

I planned on the flame angel and mandarin to be the last for the tank to make sure there was plenty of algae and pods available.

I think after reading how the picasso's are 'caution' for everything that will be my pipe dream some day so I'll remove them from the list.

So with this amount would you consider this an average or high bio load?

- 2 x Ocellaris Clowns
- Lawnmower Blenny
- Yellow Tang
- Flame Angel
- Green Mandarin

What about an orchid dottyback?

That bioload is on the low side

What about an orchid dottyback?
Orchid dottyback (P. fridmani) is one of least aggressive dottybacks, but still mildly aggressive compared to other fish. I tend to like fish with interesting behaviors e.g. a goby/pistol shrimp combination or perhaps a flasher wrasse. Both could be added with no issues to your fish list. Firefish are nice but are shy so no aggressive planktivores

Okay....just to recap

55 gal tank with about a 40 gal sump/fuge
Will have live rock...not sure how much yet...depends on how much the above costs...
Enough sand for a four inch Bottom -- live sand.

2 Ocellarilous Clownfish
2 spotted cardinalfish
1 helfrichi Firefish

I think that I am going to hold off on the Mandarin until I know for sure that I can do it correctly.

I am looking at the size of the fish and wondering if that bioload is fine (will have some corals eventually...would love to have a clam or two, and would like to have a shrimp and some snails and one hermit crab to pacify my 12 year old daughter).

Could I realistically have another fish? Was considering a goby/shrimp combo

Clams are a function of your lighting. A cleaner shrimp or two, and snails are fine. You could absolutely have a goby/shrimp combination.

I have a 75G with a 55 G sectioned off for the skimmere, return and fuqe. I currentlyhave 90# Live Rock with 150# live sand. So here are the fish I was thinking about starting with.

A oceanlaris clown possible a pair.
Yellow Watchmen goby
Kole Yellow Eye tank
Manderin when the tank is ready
Possible a Wrasse of some sort
and maybe a couple of firelfish.

How doe as this look so far?

newbie suggestions

Hi

I have a 44g pentagon tank with a sunsun 303b canister filter w/uv sterilizer the media trays are filled with floss/activated carbon, ceramic rings, live volcanic pebbles. I have a seaclone 100 protein skimmer, and 2 powerheads with spongefilters. Theres about 35-40 lbs of live rock, and 40lbs of crushed coral mixed with argonite sand.

Its been up and running for 3 months we have a kenya tree coral that came on one of our live rocks and has lived through the culturing/cycling. Theres a couple turbo snails about 6 or so astrae snails a couple nassarus snails, 6-8 mixed hermit crabs mostly blue and red legged. a couple fiddler crabs? For fish we have 2 clowns, a lawnmower blenny, and a neon goby. We would like to add a flame angel, a couple cleaner shrimp, and lastly a mandarin goby. We've considered obstaining from the flame angel, and getting something else. Would this tank be too small for a copperband butterfly fish?

We have 1 50/50, and 1 blue actinic 18", 15 watt T8's

I was appreciate any advice on stocking levels, or other suggestions.

p.s. My stand regretably doesnt have room for a sump, nor do I have the floor space where the tank sits now (not to mention it would take away from the tank ascetically.)

oh, and all water parameters are great.

I have a 75 Gallon tank with a 40 gallon sump (20 for fuge). I don't know how many pounds of live rock, but enough for landscaping and some in the fuge. Crushed coral for the bottome. NAC7 skimmer, bio pellets, and carbon for filters. I will be adding mesh screens on the top.

Current Livestock
2 Percula Clowns
1 Yellow Tang
1 Flame Angel
1 Butterfly
1 Foxface Rabbit Fish
2 skunk cleaners
snails
NO hermits

I am thinking of adding
2 firefish - I have read here only one or a matched pair IIRC. How can you tell if they are matched?
2 Anthias or 2 wrasse -recommendations please>

Thanks Steve

A oceanlaris clown possible a pair.
Yellow Watchmen goby Excellent, I presume with a pistol shrimp
Kole Yellow Eye tank Tang -- acceptable but marginal for this sized tank
Manderin when the tank is ready Assuming you do not add another copepod eater, 9 months down the line should be fine
Possible a Wrasse of some sort If you want the mandarin, don't put a lined wrasse in there
and maybe a couple of firelfish. If you want more than one, be sure it is a bonded M/F pair

How doe as this look so far?

Fine so far

A mandarin would likely starve, a flame angel is a grazer and your tank is a bit too small, the cleaner shrimp will be fine
We've considered obstaining from the flame angel, and getting something else. Would this tank be too small for a copperband butterfly fish?

First, copper bands are difficult fish, secondly your tank is too small. Sorry.

We have 1 50/50, and 1 blue actinic 18", 15 watt T8's

I was appreciate any advice on stocking levels, or other suggestions.

When water parameters are mentioned we always want values not "water parameters are great". thanks for your cooperation in that last one!

Current Livestock
2 Percula Clowns

1 Flame Angel
1 Butterfly What kind of butterfly
1 Foxface Rabbit Fish
2 skunk cleaners
snails
NO hermits

I don't know of any physical way to tell. It is somewhat hit and miss but if they are hanging out together at the LFS, you have a chance

2 Anthias or 2 wrasse -recommendations please>

I like both. Replendant anthias are wonderful but require feeding a couple of times per day

Thanks Steve

Copper Band Butterfly, and I forgot to mention green/target mandarin and a scotter blenney.

For multiple feedings is pellet/flake acceptable? Or must it be frozen/live.

Thanks again/still

If you have your copperband eating, that is half the battle. However you have some fish that will become fairly substantial in size so I am concerned about long term health and stability. A mandarin and a scooter blenny compete for foods so you may deplete your supply of copepods with two fish eating them. If all fish are eating pellet/flake that may be fine, but I personally limit pellet to one feeding (autofeeder) and feed live or frozen for the remainder.

steve quick question, i have a 220 mixed reef tank and it only has fish in it at the time but one is a 6inch blue tang. right now it is very peaceful but ive added NO new tankmates for some time now. do you anticipate this being a problem.
also i noticed above you said chromis typically kill each other off till one remains. i started w 6 2yrs ago and have one left. is there any theory on this???
corey

The Chromis thing seems to be a function of social hierarchy with the strongest prevailing. Some have reported that current in the tank seems to diminish this tendency but I am not convinced.

A hepatus tang will become very ornery as it matures. I do anticipate problems if you add fish. The larger it gets, the meaner it will become to new additions.

Is that read "I don't recommend adding more fish." Thanks for clarifying.

FYI - Everyone has been in there for 6+ months.

Which is a good thing. What I try to do on these stocking plans is look into the future when the fish have grown, their perceived ecological niche has shrunken, and how they will act then. I do not recommend adding more fish, especially grazers.
