25g
Aqueon 20 HOB filter
Aqueon 250 gph circulation pump
AquaC Remora Nano skimmer
20# LR, 20# LS
Has been up and running for 4+ months, readings all check out nice.

I currently have:
Inverts
1 Astrea snail (was 3, 2 died one way or the other. crabs most likely)
3 Red Leg Hermits
10 Nessarius snails

Fish
2 baby Ocellaris Clownfish (purposefully bought young, I'd really like to hope they mate)

Will I be able to add:
1 Yellow-Tail Damsel
1 Red Flame or Coral Beauty Dwarf Angel
1 Short Spine or Pencil Urchin

Any other advice is appreciated. Thanks

Given that you bought "baby" clownfish, they will sexually mature, then bond, and eventually mate. When that happens they will pretty much control your 25 gallon tank as they like to "keep" 25-30 gallons as their "territory"

Will I be able to add:
1 Yellow-Tail Damsel If you are going to do one of the angelfish below, I would pass on this
1 Red Flame or Coral Beauty Dwarf Angel Your tank size is marginal for either of these fish, but yes, you probably could do one of them. Your tank needs to mature a bit more since these fish like to graze
1 Short Spine or Pencil Urchin These urchins are somewhat of a bulldozer with regard to aquascaping.

Any other advice is appreciated. Thanks

is there a percentage figure of the chance i'll have the clowns spawn? is it anywhere close to the ratio of fish like Mollies or etc? I'd really like to be able to raise a few.

I understand about Clowns' sex change and etc, that's why i had waited till my LFS got a shipment of 1" young fish and got a pair from the same batch.

I'll wait a bit on the dwarf angels...i already have a good amount of brown, long stringy algae. I'm debating on which dwarf...the red flame is GORGEOUS but $$$ (i.e., $60 at Petco), and i've yet to see a coral beauty in person, but it's lower cost is a plus. I understand that saltwater fish is a more expensive game, but I'm REALLY nervous about dropping that much scratch on one fish, that I can't take back, that will go into my first salt tank.

Given that you raise them properly and feed regularly, I would say your odds are 100%. If you are planning to raise them, I strongly suggest Clownfish by Joyce Wilkerson which is available in paperback at Amazon or wherever.

You should be good

Well, my bias would be to get a Hawaiian or Marshall Islands Flame Angel but if you have hair algae you may be over feeding and have nitrates. Remember a nitrate test will not give you a true number as the nitrates have been absorbed by your hair algae. Do you have a skimmer?

I do have a skimmer, it's only been up and running for 2 days now though, but it's in motion.

The hermits do a fairly good job chopping the algae down. I am currently running on tap water too, so that could be a cause for my HA and diatoms. I have a BRS 75gpd RO/DI kit in the mail now though.

Yes, good water is essential and the skimmer will definitely help!.

I plan on transferring my 64g into 120g and unsure of how many fish I can have.

The 120g will have 2 inches of LS about 100lbs of LR, 27g sump with skimmer

Currently Have
1) Green Chromis x3
2) Tank Bred Percs x2
3) Midas Blenny
4) Pin cushion sea urchin
5) Hermit Crabs
6) Numerous Snails

I Would like to add the following over time:
1) Linckia starfish
2) Green Mandarin (once tank matures)
3) Leopard Wrasse (once tank matures)
4) Carpenter Flasher Wrasse x2 maybe?
5) Flame Angel
6) Clown Goby
7) Royal Gramma
8) Firefish x2?

2) Green Mandarin (once tank matures)
3) Leopard Wrasse (once tank matures)
4) Carpenter Flasher Wrasse x2 maybe? A pair or harem would be great. But they may intimidate firefish so the firefish must be added first with a gap of a month or more until you add flasher wrasses
5) Flame Angel
6) Clown Goby
7) Royal Gramma
8) Firefish x2? Only if they are a bonded pair; otherwise long term you will have only one survive

Wondering if I can put a Hector's goby into bare bottom tank. I would make sure it's eating frozen food before buying. Tank if 15g. Thanks.

Ok, I haven't set my tank up yet, but it is a 180g standard. Right now I am trying to determine my fish list.

I have been researching the Blue Hippo tangs, and outside of RC, no one states that they need 240g. I was wondering why there is such a discrepancy. I have seen some state that they can be kept in 75g(obvious BS), but I have seen many recommend 150+. From what I have read, the largest ever recorded was 14" yet I see many people claim that they all grow to a foot or bigger. I am just trying to get better clarification about the compatibility of Blue Hippos in 180.

Thanks for the input.

Hector's Goby, also known as Hector's Hover Goby, has a bluish-black body with bright yellow horizontal stripes and an eyespot on the dorsal fin.

A 10 gallon or larger aquarium with plenty of hiding places is suitable for this fish. It can be included in a reef aquarium and the fish will sift the sand as well as graze on hair algae. It is non-aggressive towards other fish and will not bother invertebrates in the tank.

Hector's Goby is easy to feed and its diet consists of most marine foods. It consumes large amounts of algae, worms, and prepared foods such as vitamin enriched mysis shrimp and brine shrimp.

That recommendation is the consensus of RC staff including myself. We feel that any fish that gets to be a foot or more needs a 10 foot tank (gallonage is less important than length) because this fish particular fish is a swimmer and because it gets claustrophobic and hence aggressive/mean in smaller tanks. Also note that this species is highly susceptible to cryptocaryon irritans. Folks who recommend smaller tank sizes are often selling fish or trying to sell themselves that what they are doing is really ok.

I have seen some state that they can be kept in 75g(obvious BS), but I have seen many recommend 150+. Well, they do grow fast and they are very likely to reach 12 inches in captivity (although I have never seen one reach 14 inches, I have seen some reach 12 inches. See BrianD's tank video and that Hepatus Tang is in a 550 gallon and makes the tank look small. Remember, this thread is an expert thread not a discussion thread. Pretty much all of us have been doing this for at least 20 years.

Thanks for the input.

Snorvich, since I see you're online, I thought I'd hit you up with one more question. In lieu of a blue spotted jawfish, would a yellow headed jawfish be suitable for a 150 gallon reef? From what I've read, they have a slightly higher temperature range. Is their behavior similar to the BSJ? Do they require a substantially deeper sand bed?

As always, thanks for the excellent information; you guys are doing great work here!

Actually, my status is invisible. But in any case, yes, they are much easier and will do well in what most of us consider normal temperatures. Also, less aggressive, and just as interesting. Sand bed depth is similar for all jawfish. If you do this, you could get 3/4 inch PVC pipe and bury it in a couple of places so it can make a home in one.

For my 8g I was thinking of getting a blood red shrimp and cleaner shrimp along with a goby/shrimp pair, is that too much?

I think that would be fine. The goby will not allow cleaning, however.

Wrong thread. This thread is for new to the hobby who want to check out their planned fish list. Try the general forum Reef Discussion. Thanks.

I have a 20H right now with 2 - Small Ocellaris Clowns. I have a CPR Bak-Pak 2 Skimmer, and am adding an AC110 modded as a fuge. I'm trying to figure out what else to add in terms of fish. I'm thinking of probably 2 more fish. Maybe a Purple Firefish and a Green Clown Goby will these work in a 20? Any suggestions if not?

Thanks!

Looking for some input for a 180G I'm about to upgrade to from a 55g. I'll have a 40b Sump to go with the 180g tank. Plan on having some softies and LPS.

Current Fish that will transfer:
Yellow watchman goby paired up with a tiger pistol shrimp
Longfin Fairy Wrasse pair
Mystery Wrasse
Mated Pair of False Percs.
Shark Nose Goby
Starry Blenny

What I'd like in the future:
Mandarin
Flame Angel or bi-color angel.
Pair of royal Grammas
Midas Blenny

Open for suggestions on a few more fish. I wouldn't mind geting a couple tangs as I haven't had one in a long time being I've had a 55g.

The problem is that you clownfish will become sexually mature, bond, then pretty much take over your tank. You may get away with one of those two fish.

Thanks for the reply. The mystery wrasse has been great so far with my fairy wrasses but I do not plan on adding any more wrasses. It will be a few months after I setup the 180 before I add any fish but not to worried about the mandarin as everything in my current tank will transfer over including the bazillion various pods that are overrunning everything. I don't clean my glass anymore because of algea but to wipe the pods out of the way.

I've only heard about how entertaining it is to have a mated pair of grammas. I won't attempt to pair them up myself so I will be keeping a lookout for them for sale already paired up. I know it could take a while for that to happen but I think it will be worth the wait.

I would love some input on some Tangs as I have no experience with them really. Would something like a powder brown and purple tang work together? I think they look really nice and according to the tang list would fit in the 180. Naso blond tang would be my favorite but shows they would do better in a 224G 8ft tank. Any other suggestions on two tangs that could live together?

Any other fish suggestions I haven't mentioned that would go well with my current live stock?

Although this thread is focused on new to the hobby (I suspect you are beyond that point) I will be happy to offer some ideas. First, I would recommend reading this Tangs generally tend to be more susceptible to cryptocaryon irritans so it is essential that you quarantine any additions. You can check out my blog for quarantine issues and a write up on cryptocaryon irritans. I personally am somewhat partial towards Ctenochaetus tangs but I can easily see the appeal of a Powder Blue Tang. If you are leaning in that direction, it would be best to read the fish primer on these as they are a bit more difficult to properly keep. A discussion of the attributes of various tangs is more readily available in the Reef Fish forum. I am more inclined personally to keep many smaller fish rather than larger fish such as tangs.
