Thanks Capn. Nice tip on keeping the sponge out of the sump until needed.

hows it going today?
sorry i don't know how i miss that it was d to the p that was going on vacation. i want to ask about a stocking list. 1-hippo tang or a foxface. 2- pair of clowns. 3-pair of the yasha gobies or yellow watchmen. 4-and a pair of either purple firefish or red firefish. update on the skimmer they are going to replace it for me with no extra cost to me. that is a load off of my mind though i hope it arrives this week because the tank will start to drain into the sump this upcoming weekend. sorry didn't mean to hijack the thread but i figured this would be the best place to get the anwser that i wanted and give others an idea of a list. |

Today I managed to finally tear down the 55g prop/stock tank. I transfered the remaining rock to the 30g QT tank. The sand was pitched, and the tank is sitting on my porch with bleach water running through it. It's the first time in almost 4 years it's been shut down. I still have the electrical project looming, but I'm in no rush to get that done ![]() |

No worries on posting the list... ![]() Looks good... you will want to cover your tank with something as gobies have been known to go airborne. Blue Hippo Tangs get extremely large rather quickly... although capn could probably provide more accurate information, as he has one in his tank. I don't remember what size tank you were working on, but it's something to consider. Also, I really like the purple firefish and think they are a great addition. |

I just wanted to say congrats to Capn, Rayoto, & SciFi as we were all lucky enough to have pictures of our refugiums featured in this month's issue of Reefkeeping Magazine.

![]() I wouldn't forsee any issues then. I decided not to cover the back of my canopy with anything, because of the internal overflow. A fish would have to make quite the jump to get over the overflow and out the back of the canopy. I figure if he hates life in my tank to that extent, then I will grant him his exit ![]() |

unlike your tank i utilized a single bulkhead without an overflow on the bulkhead i placed an elbow and a strainer. this is what todd at reefsystems suggested i do said that it is ease of use. that and the fact that i am on a tight buget for this build that just seemed like the best solution.
your right if they want out let them out ![]() |

I think that was how the previous owner originally had the tank set-up... Also, I have seen a lot of tanks set up at LFS's using that method. Like you said, it is an easy and cost effective way to plumb a tank. With only one drain, you will need to watch nothing clogs the drain though.
I may do something similar in the future, as I am considering turning the 30g tank into a softy tank down the road. |

That's the best way... I bought Laura a 20g tank for her apartment back when we were in college. Until then she just tagged along with me to LFS's, and sort of "put up with" my hobby. I let her take care of it, (somehow I still ended up doing the water changes though) and stock it with whatever she wanted, and after that she was hooked.

Also, here are some random pics:
Here's the snail who has been banished to refugium patrol. He has been putting in some long hours munching away the remaining purple "fuzz" algae in the fuge. ![]() A few days worth of skimmate from the MSX-160, now that it is back to business as usual: ![]() ...and Laura made a new friend today while I was cleaning everything ![]() |

post more pictures of Lau..... tank. Can't you take that nice clean space you made and put a small in-wall tank ? I'm on pace to open
my own fish store with the stuff I'm accumulating. |

![]() Actually if I didn't rent, and plan on buying a house withing the next 3 to 5 years if not sooner, I would have put a large 200+ gallon tank in that space. That door goes to the garage, so I could have ran all the plumbing into the garage through the wall. Laura actually wants me to put a corner style tank there... but like you I have so many tanks and supplies lying around, I don't need or want to collect anymore. I figure 2 tanks running at any given time is enough for me.

I'm sure Laura can come up with something to put in that blank space
![]() ![]() Tswifty off topic but did you quarantine any of your new corals? What are your thoughts on that? I have been researching and I see a lot of recommendations for it (never have knock on wood), and have a coral shipment coming from reefhotspot and am not sure what to do. Capn, others any thoughts? |

I believe there are dips you can do in order to reduce the chance of introducing unwanted hitchhikers to the display. I know some people use FW dips, and there are also some medicated dips, but I am unsure about which medications to use. Once I begin to purchase some larger colonies, I plan on resuming my QT practice, and will probably research the various types of dips and methods. Capn may have some better insight, as I am still new to the whole coral scene. The pics below were of my QT setup. I installed a shelf in the 55g tank, along with 2 t5's located directly above the shelf. The lighting in the QT tank only needs to be strong enough to keep the corals alive, not stimulate growth. Also, I never use the original frag plugs anymore. My bryopsis breakout as I stated above road in on a zoanthid frag plug, now I just eliminate that opportunity. ![]() ![]() ![]() |

Actually its Tom, Tmz that would have the correct info on what chemicals to use with corals in a fresh water dip---I have never used anything but fresh tank temperature ro water

Small crisis today... A/C went out... Laura just called and the tank temp is on the rise. It's at 85 right now, which isn't too much of a concern, but I have her floating bags of ice in the sump until I can get home to figure out what to do.
It's 92 today, and it looks like maintenance won't be able to get someone out to fix it until tomorrow.
