aha! after posting a few things and whatnot i found this thread. sorry i did things a tad backwards lol. well, here it goes: My name is James. i live in a small town outside of san antonio texas. For the past 10 years or so i been really in to saltwater esp. reefs. Prior of course, Freshwater. gone from a simple 55gallon to a 125. now have a 180 deep. gone through more diy sumps than i can count, made more mistakes than i care to Tell, and learned way more about this hobby than i thought was immaginable! i love corals... ok Australian Corals now! ive gotten rid of just about everything in my tank to stay primarilly with those. done bare bottom, DSB, protien skimmers only, bio balls (uggg), omg... refugiums! now ive gotten all the hype out of the commercial sales end of this hobby and run 2 protien skimmers (octos.), 200 micron filter bag, and LR with a 1inch'ish SB. i do 30 gallon WC's every 30-60 days, and all i check now is salinity upon WC's. i Do though use the pos apogee par meter just to keep in sink with how my t5's are doing for replacement. i run dual photoperiods per 24hrs. and have a 40 gallon corner dips. tank for the wife and her fox and goniopora (ug), but hay she's happy! i prolly log in about 5 hours a day into my tank just thinking, playing around, feeding, etc. I completely hooked and the more i learn the more hooked on this hobby i Get! so there's the shpeel. and Hello everyone!

Hello I am new here... I have been reading this forum and trying to learn before I start buying. I hav not bought anything yet but I pretty much decided on 150 gal. I had FW fish in the past but now I want to try SW. First thing I'd ask is if anybody can recommend some good up to date books I can read? At this point I keep going back and forth on whether I want to do reef or FOWLR. I guess it'll just hit me at some point. Right now I am just a little fearful of the corals etc... Them seem like something for the advanced aquarist.
Thank you Donald |

Hello, im going to consider myself somewhat new again. Been a few years since tearing down my 75g fowlr setup and getting back into things and relearning everything. At the moment im working on a 29g reef and still new to corals. Been cycling about a month and just introduced 2 green chromis. Hoping to introduce some starter coral in june. I learned most of what I knew from my last set up on here and hoping to relearn what has been forgotten.

I am not new to tanks but new to salt water. I have kept freshwater fish for 20+ years and make the leap to salt water last year. My tank sat empty with no fish, just water and rocks for over six months while I worked up the nerve to put in fish. After learning where to buy and where not to buy I have 1 blue and yellow damsil, two very transparent yet colorful fish, have no clue what they are called, and one clown. A small rock with three mushrooms on it and several hermit crab things. Not sure where to go next.

I found more info from talking to fellow aquarium owners and from sights like this rather than books, all though I do have saltwater aquariums for dummies, I like that one. I am determined to have a very large reef tank one day, a dream of mine, but for now I am happy with my 40 gallon bow front with some rocks and what not. |

Been looking around here for several months and thought I should intro myself.
My name is Jason and am very new to SW aquariums. Have a buddy that I will blame for getting me involved and been helping with his tank for about a year. Have most everything I need with the exception of substrate, as I am still trying to get my head around DSB or SSB, and which would be best for me but I know I will have sand. Once I get it figured out I will be able to start cycling. Looking forward to all the great help that you experienced reefers can provide! |

Okay, so I figured out what FOWLR means. I have some coral so I am not that. lol I am finding new "critters" in my tank every week! How is it that new life just springs up in my closed environment?
These clear white very small "bugs" are on my mushroom rock, I have seen two so far. Where did they come from and should I be worried? PS. Sarah, the pink is really hard to read, it's to light. ;o) |

Hello all, thought I'd introduce myself as I've been a part of this forum a while now learning all I can about this hobby.
I'm Dan and, yes, I'm a reefaholic. I live in the Kansas City area with my lovely young family. I purchased an AGA reef ready 125gal about a year ago and have been slowly acquiring equipment for my setup and just recently purchased my skimmer and now feel ready to fill the tank and take the plunge. Reef Central has been an invaluable resource for my endeavor, and will continue to be in the future. |

Hello everyone. I am new to the saltwater world and my tank has been up and running for just over 3 weeks now. The freshwater world just got too boring for me and my wife (even though we love those fish too) and we wanted something more. Found a killer deal on a tank and a stand and the rest was history.
Current setup: 100g tank 2 - Cascade 1500's CPR Bak Pak 2 Skimmer (HOB) Fluval 300W Digital Heater Working on a sump tank and getting a real skimmer. Right now there is just over 50 lbs of live rock in the tank with a damsel and two clown fish. Tank has been up and running for 3 weeks now. In another 2-3 weeks I am looking to add a dogface puffer as the next fish and then who knows! Plenty of room under the stand to grow the tank, but this is also still a learning process for us so don't be too harsh on what we have! I am also already getting ideas for the next tank once we feel confident to upgrade. |

Hey RC,
My name is James and I've always had a fish tank while growing up, fresh water, and have wanted to step into saltwater keeping for quite some time. After nine years of no aquarium I set up my first saltwater tank about eight months ago, OCT 2010. I've been bitten by the saltwater bug for sure. My DT tank is a 60 gallon mixed reef. I've also got a species only tank where my Bimac octopus calls home. Both systems are thriving. I'm by no means a saltwater nut and that's why I'm here. You can never stop learning. |

Introduction!
Hi! My name is Sarah. I'm pretty new this hobby. I've had a saltwater tank for almost 2 years now. My first year was pretty much all mistakes, so I've done a lot of learning. Right now I have a 29 gallon (tall) tank with 1 clown named Leviathan (I think he's a false percula, but he won't sit still long enough to count the spines!), 1 black longspine urchin, 1 emerald crab, 1 turbo snail, 1 turban snail, 1 bumble bee snail, and 1 nassarius snail. It's kind of an odd group, but they keep me company and don't bother each other. I tell my friends instead of calling it "my fish tank," I should call it "my invertebrate tank."
I only have a hang-on-back filter, but I am under the impression that my tank is small enough to get away with that, and I check my chemical levels regularly (never had a problem except during an early algae bloom). Also, I have an air pump attached to bubble wands to increase the airflow since my filter pump isn't very strong. I have some relatively high-range bulb for daytime, but I don't recall exactly what it is. I know it's probably not good enough for most corals, but it's better than the one that came with the tank. Anyway... That's pretty much it. I'd love to have a bigger tank, but my living situation is never vary stable. I'm a student, so it could be years before I have a semi-permanent living location. In two years, I've already transported my tank three times. In the next few years, I shouldn't have to move quite that often. Even so, I don't think I could move something bigger than 30 gallons even occasionally. Nice to meet everyone! All advice welcome! |
