No I have to wait for him to be done playing to get it back. He takes it to the top of the tank and drops it, then chases it down. Does it for a couple of minutes, then I get it back. Of course I have to go all the way to the bottom of the tank to get it!

Here's my favorite. My tomini tang. I just am shocked every day by the great personality and the awesome colors, i have seen several tomini tangs, but i really like how dark mine is and how dark/bright the orange is. i will try to get some close ups with the new camera tomorrow.

I have to play, here is our Naso Tang. We have only had him for a couple of weeks. He came from someone who was selling their tank and the new owner didn't want him. His loss is our gain. He is so personable. When we walk up to the tank he will swim over by us. He begs like a dog. When I have Nori in my hands he swims by his lettuce clip waiting for his treat. He sees the Nori outside the tank and knows what it is. He is so cool. ![]() ![]() |

I'd like to start some discussion on this thread about Tang Myths and Theories. Here are some things that I hear alot:
Tangs should be kept in tank no less than 4ft - I disagree because i have seen tank in 32" tanks and the tangs are thriving, obviously these tangs are babies and will grow fast and need moving to a bigger tank fast but they seem fat, healthy and disease free. My LFS has a tiny Yellow and Hippo tang in an RSM! These tangs will grow fast obviously but they are also thriving. Tangs have a big affect on bioload - I have seen a 40g with a PBT (brown), Hippo and a Kole and they had 0 Ammonia, Nitrites, Nitrates and Phosphates. So IMO if you maintain a well kept system with a good amount of filtration then things may be fine. Obviously these are only a couple of things that are believed out there so I would like to know some things that you have all read. Thanks |

How many times do people want to argue over tangs? They are beautiful, awsome fish that have personality (Good and Bad).
How many grouper's are in a 55g, sharks in a 100g? Aligators in a 5x5 cage? ![]() It is only a myth if you dont look for the long term health and life of the tang. Or any animal for that matter. Tangs swim all the time, and graze none stop. If you put the amount of rock they need in a 30g to feed off of, they would have no room to swim, stress out, get sick, and die like most tangs do. Putting tangs in a 40g and maintaing zero amm. and such is possible for the advanced hobbiest if you have a big enough filter system and maintain the tank and such. I think the smaller tangs would be fine in 4 foot tanks. But you have to look at some tangs get to 8", thats only about 3 feet of swimming room (not 4') . That kind of setup should only be maintained by the most dedicated aquarist. Most fish stores have all there tanks plumbed together, then going to a sump, and filter system, which means more water volume. They still dont have alot of room to swim, and arent in the healthiest condition. Most people wont feed them accordingly to maintain them for long periods of time in a small setup, or over feed and dont stick with a water changing schedule. Then there wondering what happened? I dont understand! He was perfectly healthy?!?. Bottom line is most people shouldnt cram them because the majority of people are too lazy or too busy to keep up with the bio load. Here's a so called myth. Fish grow to their environment. Alot of people will say its true, and I'm not going to argue with them. Feed sparingly so they dont grow too quick!?? People do it too all kinds of fish and animals. They either dont know better, or just dont care. Majority dont care. Dont take this as you hit a nerve or I'm ranting ![]() There are successful people out there that take great care of their animals and value there life. I applaud them. I'm just simply starting what has been stated over and over.

Oh no, I completely understand what you mean. I dont really believe the fish grow to their environment thing. Just because something is too small for them to swim, thats not to say it wont grow. I rememmber on another reefing website I saw somebody who had kept a Hippo tang from a baby in a Cube (55g I think) and it was nearly the size of the front glass. It didn't look like it had any disease but I very much doubt that fish was healthy nor happy.

Kar i think if you have a good sized aquarium with good levels you can keep a good amount of tangs. Like 2-3. This is in a 4ft tank. I think that the 4 ft tank gives them enough room to swim and enough room to grow. I mean this is what i think is true but it might not be true. Like you could keep a naso in a 100g tank just be ready to upgrade or take him out in a year or 2. Same goes with the other big tangs out there.

One other story i have is that. I was looking onlin one time and i saw this beautiful 75g tank all set-up. I know it was reef but i believe it was mostly SPS. I mean this tank was great. Here was his fish list if i can remember right.
Naso Tang PBT Tomini I belive there was one more not sure though 2 types of clowns Blue throat and some more fish. This is what i remember from the tank The tank was amazing looking everything was good. The fish were completely healthy. They were fat. All the levels were zero. I just dont know how he did it.

I'm not trying to get a big debate about tank size and bioload here. I am just wondering about things you all hear such as Tangs showing there lateral line is a disease. Tangs can and will get ich.

Some say that the lateral line disease is from tangs being taken from the Red Sea ( which is a higher SG) and then we are putting them in our tanks with lower SG. Dont know if its true or not though.
