I also meant to add that I'm planning on adding the deep cycle battery backup... maybe two or three batteries in parallel to power my entire tank in an emergency mode.

Are you using a relay to switch power when power is lost (ala Tunze style) or do you have it setup a different way?

Count me 3 lol,... I'm looking into stepper motors right now, the kind they use in diy robots ect. They seem very easy to control their speed, but I'm still trying to find a easy way to reverse their directions without being attached to an arduino....bet frogg knows how

you can find a used ups's with out batteries on ebay cheap. You need to size it to power the items you want to run in a outage and then buy the correct size closed cell batteries that will last your guessed amount of power outage time. When power comes back on the ups will recharge the batteries until next time you need them.

Of course this is all in theory. lol.

I also put two of these rotators together but from my own design. Here is what I came up with. It even has the ability to adjust the speed of the rotation! The increase of growth I have had since adding these to my display has been like nothing I have ever seen! I am rotating a Tunze 6105 and one WP40. Both are controlled by an Apex.

I used the actual Tunze c-clamp mount to hold both the Tunze and the WP40 from the top. Works like a charm. This one is the Tunze 6105 but it illustrates the idea.


Here is a shot of the box itself. Ignore the acrylic spacer under the box. I have very thin bracing (Oceanic Tech Series tank).


Here is the inside of the rotator. Basically a motor, axle, swing bar, bearing, gearing and the speed control.

hollback,...I read your posts on the Swirler Stein thread,...and really got interested/hooked from your coral growth results remarks. I read somewhere(might have been the same thread) a fellow said that his coral had been growing towards his fixed power head flow, but after he installed the rotating power head the coral started growing more natural.
Working on a diy design now. Store bought, their around $300 bucks.---Rick

The motor is a high torque, low rpm motor that is literally not available anywhere. The only place I have been able to find them is in bulk for $160,000 for 40,000 of them! They were used in the automotive industry and are very popular in the Halloween prop community but they dried up at the end of 2011. Luckily I purchased a few extra motors before they disappeared. I will try to find a part number.

Most of the basic parts came from McMaster but there are also about half a dozen custom CNC machined parts.

OK: I'm gonna jump in on these as well.

My tank is a bowfront 155 Gal (approx 72"L x 18-24 D x 24" H). Mostly softies and LPS right now. I've seen others using 2x40's in 180, 210, 300+ gal setups.

I was about to order the dual kit with 2x FS14000's but Eric from Fish Street wrote back and said the WP 25 x2 package would be enough. Based on what others have posted here, I thought the WP 40 (or FS14000 which is basically the same) would have been a better choice.

I like the smaller size of the 25's but suspect the 40's/14000's will provide wider flow and more option, unless my tank size needs me to dial the 40's/14000's way down anyway, negating much of their benefit over the 25's. I'm not looking for waves sloshing over the edges of the tank.

I'm with you. I just ordered two 40's for my 120 48x24x24. I'm planning for SPS dominate and wanted wider flow. Also I'll get to run them at full power before water changes or once a week to get detritus suspended and down into my filter sock.

I'm really not sure have to 40s would be any problem at all.

You would not use the jebao controller if you hooked the pump up to an aquarium controller. The dual controler, at least the 6 amp version, can be adjusted from I think about 12v to 24v, and you can adjust both pumps max power in 10% increments from the dual controller anyways, so there is no need to dial the power supply down more.

I built a Jarduino controller, and it will run two pumps in anti-sink or each pump on/off for set amount of times, will also turn off power when feeders come on, but will not control speed or ramping. I would still like to be able to use the dual controllers functions, but have my controller power the dual controller. I don't have one yet, so I don't know if I could run two 40's with my set up.---Rick

The power from the 25's would be enough for your tank, but the 40's have a wider flow that I think may benefit your tank more.

I'm running a 40 and a 25 in my 55 gallon and I personally like the 40 better because of the flow.

I have a 40 on my 75 and thinking of putting a 25 but not sure if that would be too much. The 40 works great butt I'd like some flow coming from the other side.

That's the way I have it on my 55.
I have a 40 on the upper left side towards the front and a 25 on the lower right side towards the back.

They are running Anti-sync off of a Reef Angel controller at between 30 and 70%.

It kind of keeps the water going in a circle around the tank.

The back pump takes care of flow behind the rock work and the front one takes care of flow in the front of the tank.
