So to clarify, you're saying don't shop at Petco, right?

im not saying that at all...I buy all my dog food at petco....I was in there to pick up some of those plastic legs for my coralife twin PC ballast for my 20 gallon tank the other day, and they wanted 12.99 for them. i told the woman checking me out that the price was outragous, so she sold them to me for 8.99. Petco is for normal people, not addicts like us.

2 rios lasted less than 2 months. One was only used for 24 hours every 2 weeks for stirring fresh salwater. WASTE OF MONEY

So was it a UL Listed version?

Reason I ask is the UL versions are supposd to have a thermal cut off. As long as you still have the pump you should contact Rio and see what they have to say about it.

I never had a Rio fail, but when I saw the amount of heat they add to the aquarium, I took it off line.

A small RIO almost killed me and my entire tank. I was im my room one day watching TV, and I hear this crackling sound from my tank. I go over and notice nothing. Later I smell smoke, I look over and smoke is pouring from my tank... Like it was a FIRE!! I get to the tank, and the smoke is pouring from the Rio.

I go to touch it and it exploded. Literally, sparks and smoke went everywhere. And not little amounts, im talking about 4 ft of sparks and tons of smoke that clouded my room. Thank god the breaker went off and I didnt get electrocuted. Didnt loose any livestock either.

The list just goes on, and on, and on, and..........

I was never able to get an answer from Taam, but has anybody else contacted them and gotten a response? I only last a couple (nuts, maybe three?) hundred in hardware, but if I'd gotten zapped like derekman, pico keeper, and lots of others, I'd be after somebody's hide.

I emailed them. Was completely ignored. My girlfriend works for a products liability lawfirm, I almost asked to write me a letter. As far as I'm concerned, RIO SUCKS!

They dont even have the balls to reply to my emails for help with customer service. I'm a maxijet user now, no problems yet. Plus I added a prop and shroud to mine and let me tell you, those modded maxis move some SERIOUS water! I had to get a smaller prop, since the first time I turned them on, they turned my tank into a whirlpool of sand and fish.. I had instant xenia frags for everyone!

If I had a dime for every person in a LFS that I whispered to in an attempt to keep them from electrocuting themselves by buying a Rio, I'd be a millionaire. Seriously, every time I go into the store near where I live, I find myself trying to talk someone out of buying a dangerous product like a Rio after the owner spent 10 minutes trying to get them to spend real money on that piece of crap.

I just bought a rio +1400UL for my sump. Does the UL rating mean it's safe?

I wouldn't buy one if it had the Pope's stamp of approval.

3 Rios, never a problem.
2 Hagen aquaclears, needed new prop after 6 years.
1 Tunze - Sometimes has trouble starting up
2 Maxijets - Flawless!

Most people without problems are not going to post. If you make a thread called Broken Tunzes, you'll get lots of complaining about them too. (Though I do still think Tunzes are well made)

Start a thread about peoples experiences with Maxijets going up in smoke, or even not re-starting, and I bet you won't have 18 pages in that thread and others.

Put another way: Why supply your product with a pump (a very important piece) that is known to break? Reputation is important so i guess the money must be good
Most people do not know their rep, so the money keeps flowing.

Lets face it though, Tunzes generally dont EXPLODE or leak OIL or ELECTROCUTE people. Yeah, pumps die, but for the love of God, ELECTROCUTION? SPEWING OIL? Seriously, Rio's are in a completely different league of manure.

I've cut a couple of rios in half to check, there is no oil in them. Any product that goes in water that includes a power cord has the potential to shock you. I am more concerned with the failures with the split cases. If the coil melts down you just put copper (and who knows what else) in the tank, not good.

I agree Grim, but I personally have never heard of any stories of other brands splitting open like the many MANY Rio stories. Have you?

The frequency of these stories about Rio's is enough to steer me clear of that garbage for as long as I am involved in this hobby.
