I'm just playin man. This thread is for anyone with a cheap skimmer that works well. There is another hot skimmer that needs to be tested as well. The finnex hot or hit, will run either way. And imo it looks good as well and its shipped for around 45bux. I may get one to test. But i still think the typhoon needs to be ran as a NW and it will be 2-3x as effective.

Here's teh skimmer i'm talkin about. Looks pretty good, similar to the ps75 in price and size. I do think its a bit larger in diameter.

Re: Re: Flamed

Oh it's so easy to yank the chains of a cowboy fan. And being I stated I have a hydramaster (pre dates the typhoon) I know they are a well built and designed skimmer. I was just pulling your chain and yep got ya didn't I ? Cowboy fans. hahahahah.

Well I was hoping you were just messing around, because I am not here to diss the PS skimmers. And I thought it was odd, because you and I have both been talking on here, and being cool, then you said that! Didn't know how to take it. Anyway, back on subject....... oh and GO COWBOYS!!!!!!

I thought this thread was to help others tweaking the odyssea. So this odysseas are not worth trying for $40?

No they are worth trying for $40 for sure. I haven't done all of the mods on mine, but I have done the meshmod. I am also using the stock pump, and others use better pumps on theirs. They are certainly worth $30-$40. I am just saying if you can cough up another $20-$30, you can get a Typhoon, and it is heads and tails better then the PS75 IMHO.......

from what I saw in my ps75 keeping the pump stock made it much easier to tune in. You have to understand that mesh modding, although good, has a chance of really screwing with the dynamics of the pump. Pumps spin very very fast (exact rpm not known) so you MUST account for human error. One person may center and weight it perfectly, out of sheer luck most of the time, while someone else won't give it that much attention drastically screwing with the dynamics of the moving parts. In my personal opinion I would rather upgrade the pump un-meshed than mesh it. I was having the same "tuning" issues when meshing the pump.

You have to open up the water valve. I know this might not make sense (assuming this is your first skimmer) but mess around with the output. It has a valve there (output). Twist it untill the water level changes to a desired level.

its opened all the way. It is foam what is getting in the cup but then it becomes clear water and fills up in 10min

Something is not right as with the valve all the way open it should be no where near the top. Where is this mounted ? Sump or HOB ? If in the sump your PS is too deep in the water.

Do you have the air line/s fully open ?

If you can POST a PICTURE of your setup.

I will post a picture tonite. It is set as HOB, the valve is fully opened and the airline is fully opened.
BTW the powerhead venturi adapter has 4 inputs for the airline, can i use more than one airline? will this increase perfomance?

Thanks

I've had so many problems with odyssea products, I cant believe I'm giving them another try.

YES. I run one line to the center and another to one of the outside connections, not the nipple venturi connection. I think more air means less water and that may help you. Are you using the output sponge ? I do not use any as mines in a sump. If you do maybe it's clogged ?

How fast does it go from bubbling to overflowing the riser tube. I ask because it sounds like you might have something clogging the output or even the air intake

i know i had some cheato and a nice chunk of algea in my intake.

it's been running for a few hours. I'm pretty sure nothing is clogged. I want to be clear that is foam coming up and filling the cup, but like I said it seem like clear water, not the regular skimmate. It takes like 30min before overflowing.

Just finished reading the ENTIRE thread

I thought that I would give a PS75 a try and possibly mod it for fun to see if I can get some better performance. Then when my bioload gets a bigger, upgrade to a PS160 (though luke's results with the via aqua have me questioning).

No fish yet, only about 20 lbs. of curing LR in water that has been running for 3 weeks now. In short, not a lot of protein to skim. This is my first SW tank, thus my first skimmer as well. So I guess this is also a test of how noob friendly the pump is.

Set it up Friday night after work, here's what I woke up to Sunday morning:

Since then, I am now getting a lot darker, thicker skimmate. I will post a pic when the collection cup fills up some more, I just emptied it. The skimmate looks like a thick dark green tea now. My roommate caught me smelling it by the way. If you would have told me 6 months ago I'd enjoy smelling decaying SW material and hoping it will stink more one day, I would have called you a liar, and told you 'Good day, sir'.

I have found that tuning the skimmer has been a PITA though, but it's all a matter of time until that gets easier.

None of these skimmers will hang with the via aqua's. Here's a few pic of the last two days. I'm skimming dryer then ever. Seems like the deltec guys will tell you your skimmer sucks unless its as dark as coke. Well this is raw sewage folks, smells like sewage. Freakin disguisting. I wish someone lived around me so they could come check this baby out. Its tough when there aren't any reefers around here!

And I don't want to hear the you must have a huge bioload. I don't. I have a few softies, a 3.5" rock beauty angel, a 2" blue tang, a cleaner wrasse(tiny), valentini puffer, lawnmower blenny.....cleaner shrimp and a few snails. Thats it. In a 125g tank. So the skimmer is just that cool! lol

I spoke with a guy for a while today about meshmodding his typhoon. He's gonna do it within a week so we'll see what happens. It will pry pull 2-3x the air as it would stock or with the the wisper 60 mod. The skimmate should be much darker and more as the meshmod will make the bubbles smaller and give them more surface area and time to bond with the proteins.

But it still won't be close to the via aqua's capabilities. lol
