hey!
those strainers work good, but do add some restriction.
you should try it with and without the screen to see what you think....

some people use different ones, or put a "tee" with 2 of those on since they hold back a little...
but if the flow is good... then dont worry about it

these are what some people have been switching to...
big enough for no restriciton, but small enough to not eat fish

I have a closed loop on a hammerhead gold with one of those strainers dahenley was referring to. I also use them on the intakes for my return and skimmer pumps...They work well!!!

I love your oceans motions. Great call on that!

As pictured above... he has a spacer between the bulkhead and strainer. This is great, because it prevents sand from entering the closed loop which can scratch the OM and can cause problems with it spinning later on.

hey dahenley, i tried to buy that strainer you pointed and some other plumb fittings at Bulk Reef Supply, but that's what happened:

So I asked him if I could transfer money to his personal paypal account or wire money, after all I really need that fittings.. once again response was a big "NO, you can't"

about the oceans motions 4way?!?! THAT's AMAZING DEVICE. i'm running two of them and that's my best shot 'cause in this project i have no room for an OM 8way - I can't imagine all the plumb hassle

you're 100% right! a just make a spacer/riser (???) about 2" and to prevent any grain entering into the closed-loop i'm going to use a FSB, any considerations?

just an update, after all plumb-work and play with the both closed-loops, i decide to disassemble them all - pumps and oceans motions:
  • to see how difficult this activity can be
  • to measure the time spent
  • to check and lubricate both pumps and oceans motions

i just took this opportunity to take some pictures.

this is the Reeflo Super Dart Golf pump @4300gph // 110v // 175watts:

Thumbs up preparing for FSB

fellows,

as I said before in this project i'm going to give a try to FSB, that means faux sand bed, fake sand bed, fake substrate and and whatever you like...

i'm gonna make a FSB over the starboard (HDPE) sheet.. you know, just in case if i change my mind i decide to remove it.

but now iiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiitttttt'sssss tiiiiiiime!!!! (forgive me Bruce Buffer)

introducing the challenger, FIGHTING OUT OF THE BLUE CORNER! This sheet is a wrestler, hold a professional record of gazillion wins, a few losses. 10 feet long, 3 feet wide, 3/8 in thickness, weighting 64 pounds, 4.6 stone. Fighting out of any whosale store, Sao Paulo, Brazilll!!! .... Michel ... THE STARBOAD-HDPE .... Myers!!!

details:

and his opponent... FIGHTING OUT OF THE RED CORNER. This circular saw is a mixed martial artist, holding a professional record of infinite wins, zero losses. Standing 7.4 inches, weighting in at 7 pounds, 0.5 stone. Fighting out of my woodshop, Sao Paulo Brazil. This saw is undefeates in it martial arts career. It is the reiging, the defender. Ladies and gentlemen, the one, the only ... Jason ... "THE Leatherface" ...Voorheess!!!!!

when the action begin, "the guide" wil be the referee in charge:

do you remember the bottom braces thickness?

i had to make these recess on the starboard to make it possible to cover all around the bottom:

closed-loop holes marked:

these are the bulkheads nuts:

Very nice Euler... Thinking of changing my SSB to Starboard too...

Which skimmer will you be using?

going to bare bottom, uh? in this project I opted to starboard just as a 'base' to FSB - just wait for the next post to see it - i'm updating the photos to photobucket right now.

regarding the skimmer, i'm going to use a bubble king supermarin 300 - what are you using?

Talking FSB - how i did it

...guys be prepared, it's gonna be a long post with tons of pics!

as i said, i'm going to use a FSB prepared with two-part epoxy resin + nature's ocean samoa pink #2 + carib sea fiji pink #1.

ok, let's take a look at workbench:

bags of samoa pink:

boxes of fiji pink:

i just mixed (very well mixed) in a bucket the two substrates - 2 parts of samoa pink + 1.5 part of fiji pink:

and separated 1 part of this mixture:

close:

after that, i got another bucket where i mixed the substrate part with the epoxy resin part A - first the resin:

can you see the viscosity:

then i drop the first part of mixed substrate - 1 out 3.5:

check out how the substrate goes down and resin came up:
