I just purchased a wp40 and simply am amazed! It pushes water very effectively ! As I was reading thru this thread everyone is talking about a light sensor. Are the newer versions already built in? Or is this piece an add on you have to buy?

I don't think they are built in on the newer versions and it is not an add on.
It is a very small photo cell and 90% of the time is accidentally thrown out or lost.

I looked at the box and can't really find a model number. Either way called my lfs and they will give me one to replace the one that did not come w unit.
Once I receive should I turn unit off before attaching it to controller?

Yes. Unpug the unit before you put the sensor in.

I found the sensor in the bag that came with the controller!!! Holy small!!!
Is the sensor supposed to fit snuggly into the unit or is it supposed to slightly stick out? I tried sliding it in but it only goes to a point and then stops. I certainly don't want to push and damage the unit trying to make it go all the way in. Any feedback would greatly be appreciated.

It sticks out a bit.
I don't know if they have fixed the sensitivity issuebof the sensor. It can't be in total darkness. If it is then the it won't go into night mode. There needs to be some light. I used to have the controller and sensor under my stand, but it had to be near the on switch from one of my powe strips in order to have enough light to put it in night mode when the lights went out.

Yes thanks ! I did go ahead an plug it in and immediately saw the orange señor light coming on. Let's see how when happens when halides kick on. I placed on hood left side in the back corner. Light from halides does reflect on walls so let's see if it is bright enough to shut sensor off.

Also somewhere in this thread there is a link to a photocell that Radio Shack sells that is more sensitive and works better.

I have my WP40's for about a year now. They were both running beautifully until I came home one night to 1 of the pumps being off. I unplugged the waterproof connector then reconnected and it went back on. Both pumps hadn't been cleaned since placing in the tank so I decided to give both a vinegar bath. After the bath they both worked impressively...in W1 they both created a beautiful wave however I came home from work 1 night later and the other pump had shut off. I tried putting the old controller back on, (I have the older less versatile controller and then the updated S1, S2, S3 controller), no change... in fact sometimes when I thought the units were completely off they were just running at a lower voltage/speed/mode....say 25% ...but that was without the light sensor and without me switching to lower power on the controller. I can't keep coming home to no flow and it's a drag to have to disconnect/reconnect to get them to work again. Has anybody had this issue? If so, any solutions?

Have not posted here in a while; thought I would just give an update on my wp40s...
I have had one of them for 14 months now (bought new June 2013) and it has been running on my 90g constantly since then. I have not noticed any 'slowdown' in performance as some others have mentioned. I do remove it to clean the outside of coralline buildup about every 3 - 4 months. I have not had to remove the housing or cleaned the impeller. It has never broken down or stopped working. A couple of caveats, which may (or may not) make a difference: - I run pretty much in W1 S1 mode only. I tried the others; honestly, I became interested in this pump because of the 'wavemaker' capability -so that is how I run it. - I do not use the light sensor, I never installed it. So, running speed is constant - I do utilize the feed mode several times a week. it has never failed to restart afterwards My second wp40 I bought new in September 2013 (so almost a year old now) and at first I used it constantly, also in the 90g... had the 2 pumps alternating from opposite ends of the tank. Did not see any great benefit to that (vs. a single pump) so I have relegated the 2nd wp40 to mixing WC water duty. It only gets used a couple of days a month. I run it on H1 S1 first 24 hrs to thoroughly mix the water; then on 'else' mode until I actually do the WC (usually within a day or 2). Again, no problems with starting it up even sitting dry for 3 weeks at a time. My local Club did a group buy back in June 2013 (that is how I got my first wp40). Purchased 65 pumps in all (45 wp40s, 12 wp25s, 8 wp60s). Informally, based on susequent postings on my local Message Board... zero failures that I know of. Well, one, but he dropped his on a tile floor, and it cracked the housing... I also run a dc9000 return pump. Since September as well. Dead quiet; zero issues...

I don't think that a 'wave' motion in an aquarium puts any additional stress on the tank structure... Well, not an appreciable amount. My reasoning is this: Stress is determined mainly by depth pressure in the aquarium. So, the only additional pressure would be the added height (depth) of water achieved during the apex of a 'wave'... which is only maybe a half inch to one and a half inches of difference (depending on how strong your 'wave' action is)... if your tank is 24 inches deep, an extra inch depth during each 'wave' is only about a 4% difference. And keep in mind the convex of the 'wave' is a decrease in pressure by about the same amount. It's not like we are crashing waves against the glass, as ocean waves crash against the shoreline. And we are not adding or removing any actual water volume, just oscillating the displacement of it. My 2 cents
