My name is jesse i have a 48 gal reef tank thats been running for about a year. I also have a 110 gal rimlees that i am setting up soon. I have used my 48 gal as my learing tank i used it for fresh water for years and now a reef for about a year. I am planning on setting up the 110 gal with a 30 gal sump and 20 gal refugium. I am now trying to decide on lighting either t5's or led's. One of my lfs guys said that led's are as good as the hype. If anyone who has used led's have any info on info on them i would appreciate it. I am planning on a mixed tank lps, sps, leathers and clams. That is what i have in my 48 now. Thanks for any input!

Hey guys. Another newb here. I am converting my 100g rainbow/planted tank over to salt. At this point I am still collecting equipment for the conversion. I have a 30g 3 chamber sump, a 1000gph pump, a skimmer, and some other miscellaneous stuff. I am hoping to get it setup and start the cycle in the next few weeks.

Hey everyone! Im a noob that knows just enough to be dangerous.

Im getting back into the salt world after a brief hiatus from the hobby do to work, but now I am currently cycling my new to me 120g tank in my new home.

I've learned a bunch on here already, and I will start to ask some questions soon.

My plans for my new tank are a cat shark, 12 yellow tangs, and 6 anemones. Oh, and a a few angel fish because they're pretty.

I guess I will start out by saying you all are amazing and the amount of information contained in this forum is mind blowing.

Currently I'm a student @ Vermont Technical College working on EE and CPE and have many hobbies.

I used to love fish when I was younger and got really into fresh water tanks, I had a beautiful 75g with live plants and a whole bunch of fish but had to get out of the hobby because my family moved a lot.

But a few months ago I saw a jelly fish tank on Kickstarter and did a little (very little) research and was like "I can do that" and bought a similar tank from that company. The company had really good marketing and everything was going very well until my LFS flooded and I couldn't get the water that I needed (RO/DI) to do the frequent water changes needed and it stressed out the jellies so much by the time I got the tank back to were it needed to be it was too late and my jellies died.

But overall my tank was in pretty good condition so I thought I would go for a slightly simpler setup with just some simple and hardy fish/corals. So as of right now I have kinda converted my tank to a simple saltwater sand/rock/fish tank. I was gonna wait a while to get some fish but my gf decided to get me 3 Chromis. I knew my tank wasn't ready yet as I still don't have proper lighting and my tank isn't fully cycled yet (but from reading this forum I think I still have a couple years), but in the tank they have gone. Obviously I'm having a slight algae bloom which I'm working on and hoping my fish and I can survive this ordeal.

Hopefully, I have the will power to attain/keep a slow pace but I can't guarantee anything. So let the mistakes and hard times that follow be a great and exciting adventure.

I can't wait to post some questions and help out some fellow reefers.

Just figured I'd introduce myself. My name is Drew, I'm 29 years old living in Lafayette, IN with my 2 sons and wife. I grew up in Tampa around the giant tropical and marine hobby of the 90's, however my experience was mainly with freshwater.

I have been keeping reptiles for quite a while now, and recently after some prodding from a friend started researching about saltwater. Shortly thereafter a friend of another friend casually mentioned that he had an old saltwater setup sitting in his garage that he'd let go of cheap.

During the wait for him to find and gather everything for me, I decided to start a little 15 gallon nano tank to mainly use as a seeding tank, which will later be used as a refugium, or a FOWLR for my sons (will be plumbed into larger tank's system to help with water conditions).

Well last night I got the call that everything was ready for me to pick up. We drove over to find a 75gallon tank with wooden stand, 20ish gallon sump, wet/dry filter, air stone driven protein skimmer, bio ball filter box and a 2x65w PC hood all for $200. So we snagged it and brought it home.

Got the tank set up last night, I need to modify the plumbing a little to run it the way I see the water flow working better, and currently everything is running through a vinegar cycle to clean it all up.

My name is Mitch. Have had my 65 gallon saltwater for a few years. started with mainly the live rock and my a few fish....just starting to get back to the hobby...and curious about how some of you might go about a refugium. I am finally ready to start building my reef.... I have a corallife set of lights....but have never set up my system with a refugium. What is the best way to go about setting it up....

Protein skimmer hanging off the tank or in the Refugium? I am running a Magnum 350 to filter the water somewhat and up to now that has been sufficient. So should I still use the Magnum to sent the water to a refugium and run the protein skimmer at the start or at the end?

Just picked up a 220g tank biggest I've had thus far but looking forwad to expanding literally just got it in today all acrylic beveled edge. Hi all. I'm in the planning process for setting my 75G back up. I had it for many years, but some life changing events required it to be disassembled, and I decided to wait until things had stabilized in my life before starting it back up.

Fast forward a few years, and here I am yet again. Right now, I'm still in the planning stages of things, re-reading and researching for the things I've forgotten and how some things have changed in this hobby. At the rate I move, I'll be ready to put water in the tank sometime next year. One thing I definitely remember from previous experience, is that only bad things happen quickly.

You probably won't see or hear much from me at first, as I do more reading and searching than asking new questions, as usually the answer is already out there, but I will definitely start posting pictures as things progress. First thing to tackle is a new canopy.....

Hey world! Iv never done this internet stuff before, but i thought i'd give it a shot. I am a highschool senior from maryland, and a major lover of all things fish related. I guess it all started with a little gold fish bowl i got for christmas when i was sixish...and it turned into an obsessioin that drives my family nuts . I have kept freshwater tanks ever since, and have learned alot about fish from volunteering as a exhibit guide and aquarist assistant (I am a jellyfish keeper ) at a aquarium. I have had my first saltwater tank for about a year now, it is a 75 gallon with a 4 inch sand bed, and about 100 lbs of live rock. It contains soft corals and a few fish, although my favorite by far is my mandarin dragonet. She was a little scrawny when I first got her, but now she is my fat happy baby. One day, when i have the time, space, and money i hope to successfully breed dragonets. I also love giant clams, and am a bit of a zoanthid freak. Thats realy all there is to me

Hello RC, my name is Adam. I have some past experience in saltwater, having a 125g FOWLR in the past. Now I'm diving into the real thing... A full blown mini ecosystem reef tank! I recently started a 55g setup, live rock and sand and a friendly fellow member of my local fish club (c-sea) gave me a mated pair of clowns, copperband butterly and few others free! Anyone getting into this hobby I would highly reccomend searching for a local fish club, can be very informative and you get to meet new friends! Anyways, I just set up my 4 lamp t5 system last night, now I get to start coral hunting!

Hello, this site was recommended to me by several different people and I've been poking around for a while now and now that my tank is getting closed to being cycled I thought I'd introduce myself and get all the help I can get. In reading through all the different posts I truly feel inadequate on my knowledge. Ive always been fascinated with fish keeping. I've had freshwater tank since I was sixteen. I have always wanted to set up a salt water tank and recently had the opportunity to purchase a 55 gallon tank with everything needed to get started. The gentleman I bought the system from is a well seasoned fish keeper and he's been a wonderful source but hate to keep bugging him. My system is very simple, 55 gallon tank, protein Skimmer, filter, 80 lbs of live rock, several power heads and heaters qand lighting (not really sure about that yet but the seller said its a good system) I'm doing a FO tank to start and hope down the road to convert to a reef tank but baby steps now. So any start up advise would be much appreciated.

My 14 year old son expressed an interest in getting a saltwater tank, after having some success with a small freshwater tank, so for his 8th grade graduation I got him a 24 gal nanocube. Please allow me to introduce myself. I'm David, I live in western Washington, and I've been in the saltwater hobby for a little over a year and a half. I got started in the hobby with a impulse purchase of a small 12 gallon aquarium at the pet store, and once I realized the mistake I made I quickly started studying the requisites of the hobby. After plenty of reading, I quickly grew passionate about the hobby. I've learned a lot with my small tank, and now I'm about to get going on a new 75 gallon tank! I have made plenty of mistakes and feel I've learned a lot about what not to do, but know I have a lot more learning of what TO do! I still consider myself new to the hobby, and so I'm not shy about asking questions, or taking some advice! Well, I look forward to being a part of this well appreciated community, it seems all the people I've listened to in podcasts and blogs are a part of Reef Central, and I'm thrilled to be included! I hope to learn and share my experiences here with anyone and everyone!

Hello. I'm from Edmonton, Alberta, Canada. (Yes we have some snow on the ground as of about a week ago). I have a 150gal Cichlid/mixed tropical tank, a 45gal tropical hex tank, a 55gal Cichlid tank, two Fluval Edge's, a brand new Red Sea Max 250... still in the box (bought it here in Canada at such a good deal, I had to finally take the plunge into reef), and finally to round off the household... 3 Miniature Schnauzers. Really looking forward to getting into reef, after being in tropical/freshwater for the past 30 years. (Lots to learn about reefing).

hi im ant not really new to the hobbie..been keeping fish of one sort or another for 25 years..just been out of the learning part of it for about 10 years or so ..things have changed a little ...i set up a little 37 cube berlin about 10 years ago ..then opened a race car fabrication business..and let just say my tank didnt get the attension it should have..the stand is starting to decentigrate i have more time now..so i closed off my screen porch and am making it a fish computer room with the 95 gal tank 36 x 24 x25 tank in the wall viewable from 3 sides...should be nice..trying to do it right the first time

i belong to a jet ski forum as well and they are the best for learning..used to be you had to rely on the local shop to learn everything..because of he green hulk.net my jet ski goes mid 90's because of what i have learned there...i have been lurking here for a few weeks..reading catching up on things.. i have had 125 fish tanks 65 gal reef tank among others back in the 90's almost opened a store at one point in my life..

I've had fresh water tanks off and on but this will be my first attempt at salt. hi just joined rc after reading thread after thread for two days, lots of great info. sure ill be asking all the noob questions. just starting salt after doing mainly cichlids.
picked up a hqi 24 nano cube off craigslist for $25 was going to use as a qt. but the lighting was great and seemed like such a waste to just be sitting there. so here i am thanks for the help im sure ill get
