The water in California is cold because you get your water from the currents from Alaska. Here in NY we get our water from the Gulf Stream which is from the Bahamas and Caribbean, it is warm, very warm. Our water here in NY now right near the beach is about 70 degrees, I was in it yesterday. It goes into the higher seventees by the end of the summer. We even have an infestation of lionfish here now in New York.
Next month I can collect all sorts of tropical fish like those butterflies along with lookdowns, big eyes, filefish, puffers, and those butterflies. These fish will die here in the winter. They will also die if they stay with the stream and continue up north to Nova Scotia. I am sure more fish die traveling on the Gulf stream that are collected for our tanks. These fish IMO, should be exploited for our tanks as they are doomed anyway and we would not be removing breeding fish from tropical waters.

That's a good point Paul. Here is Ireland we often get massive sunfish, as well as other tropical fish. The reason is the same, they come along the gulf stream.

In fact, it is not only fish that arrive, but we also have "native" citrus trees and other tropical species in The Burren"on the west coast of Ireland. These are more rare than other flora, the main thing people visit it for is the arctic and sub-tropical flowers which grow natively side by side. It's the only place in Europe like it too.

Boffins recently discovered a massive (cold water) coral reef a few KM's off the west coast. See here :

http://www.marine.ie/home/aboutus/ne...oral+reefs.htm

Dead cool.

Conor.

Sad news. All my fish died overnight. I have a thread about it on New To The Hobby. Bummer.

Sorry Rae. That is a Bummer.

Conor, that is cool.

Capn, I just aquired a pint of much smaller saltwater fish eggs and the fish are enjoying them. The salmon eggs are too large for my gobies but these are just fine

Thanks for the explanation, Paul. I had absolutely no idea the ocean was/can be warm out there!

I think you also have a good point about taking advantage of the doomed fish traveling that way.

I think being able to collect my own livestock would add a new level of enjoyment to this hobby!

My understand is that the gulf stream was responsible for the massive cod and herring fish off the grand banks---by providing warm warm plankton.

Cap'n, you should watch "The Blue Planet" (BBC) with the great David Attenborough. Actually just get everything he has ever made, your grandkids will love you for it.

From memory, the cold currents drive up the nutrients from the deep, which causes then drives plankton blooms - all because of warm water meeting cold.

I must go grab the DVD's and watch it again, facinating stuff.
Don't know if ye can get BBC HD (and the others), they always show his stuff. Otherwise buy the DVD/Blueray sets.

That Gulf Stream is not in an insulated pipe, it cools as it moves north and mixes with the cold Nova Scotia water. These are tropical fish and even in NY waters they are at the lower limit of their temp requirements. I am sure most of them also get eaten along the way. We have massive schools of bluefish, makeral, and porgies which will decimate any tropical fish quickly.
The schools of baby blues or snappers are all over the place and nothing is safe.

I forgot about the Mackeral--last time I was in NS we were pulling them out three or four at a time---they follow the tide in and out of Bedford Basin. Its a real rush when you hit a school of them.
I don't mind them on the barbeque either

To Reef Central Jason

Just so you know--this thread is restricted to those that respect ancient reefers and believe in reverse undergravel filters

Well, that leaves one of me.

I sold my boat last night on E Bay and am thrilled. Now I can bring my new boat up to the north shore. I can fit a lot of pods on this boat

I don't know how E Bay works but the last 5 minutes there were about 10 bids. I would imagine the guy with the highest bid will contact me this morning to take the boat. It went well over my reserve.

I also wanrt to clean up my SCUBA equipment. the Sound is looking better and I would like to collect some interesting things from a little deeper.

On a side note my bumblebee gobies are still lookinjg great.
I can't swear that there are still 5 of them because I never see all of them at once but the ones I see are over an inch long and plump.

There are now 2 pairs of gobies breeding, a pair of firefish, and a pair of bluestripped pipefish. I can't get the bumblebees to spawn, unless they do it i the dark in the back of the tank. I try not to look while they are doing that

I also started installing my new boiler last night. I hung it on the wall and will start piping it next week. It is 96% efficient and should save me $1,000.00 a year in fuel. That along with my solar electric will save me $2,000.00 in utilities. Now if I can get an electric car, I will consider myself energy efficient.

We can build a nice lithium ion battery pack and battery management system if you can get the shell of a car and a motor. 'Course that's only if you want to build an electric car yourself. Soon enough they'll be rolling off the assembly lines with warranties and everything.

So is a boiler a type of whole house heater? Sounds like a great deal for saving fuel.

How hard is it to keep pipe fish. Seeing as how I'll be re-stocking my aquarium in a few weeks (just in time for my birthday), I'm wondering about something new and different.

Yes it heats the house. I was stationed in Colorado for a few months and I know it gets cold there. What do you use?
I just took out my old inefficient oil burner.

I keep bluestripped pipefish. You need to hatch live brine shrimp everyday. I have always hatched them because I keep a lot of smaller gobies along with the pipefish.
The larger pipefish are not too easy to keep. They only eat live food until you teach them to accept dead mysis or other dead things. Sometimes they never accept dead food.

the price on eBay can jump inthe last few minutes as bidders "snipe" with last minute offerrs, trying to top the previous bids with small increases

The boat sold last night. The last five minutes saw about 10 bids.
There were 23 bids for the entire week.
I am very happy with the result.

.
You get an email of who was the highest bidder(you can also check on your add) and it is up to you to contact the buyer and make arrangements for delivery.

No pipefish for me then.

We've got a gas furnace for heating the house. I'm sure it's not very efficient, but it works well enough that we aren't replacing it just yet. Hard to think about when it's 98 degrees outside!

Yes I do. I take the heat from the outside the house and push it through my boiler to cool it

I do this so when I go on a boiler forum, everyone thinks I am so
creative.
