Good news. My new Reef Fanatic Solenoid showed up this morning, so I'm going to get it hooked up here in a little.

I just had 2 Fire fish taken out by my pistol shrimp in less then a day. Although not a 100% sure it was one of my pistols it could have been my coral banded shrimp, but I saw a Fire fish go in one of their holes and snap, snap. came out messed up. It disappeared that night, then the next day I found the other all tore up. They also had a really strange mark on the side, not a cut but it looked like a bruise or even a burn, that was one of the reason I deduced it was the pistol even though the banded may have delivered the final blow.

Any experiance with aggressive pistols? The more I read, I seem to find out they can be real nasty sometimes. I have one that is about a couple inches large

Looks like I will have to tear down the tank soon, because anything I put in gets murdered.

Sorry to hear that, the pistol shrimp I had pretty much kept to himself, and didn't bother anything. That being said, you may need to tear the tank down to catch it. I couldn't get my pistol shrimp out of my 90g tank no matter how hard I tried. I ended up losing it when I dosed my tank with Interceptor, since I couldn't successfully remove it prior to the treatments. Good luck.

It will not be fun, tearing down....80lbs of live rock, DSB etc... Have to have a friend help...

I really don't want to kill him, or the 4 others I have, but I would assume interceptor would kill everything including other stuff? It will sorta be making it up as I go along. I have never done this before so it will be an experiance. Everytime I do somthing I mess something up

I hear you on that... I try to keep my hands out of my tank as much as possible now. The same thing happens to me, everytime I try to do something in the tank, I end up breaking corals, knocking stuff over, etc... etc... I'm planning on removing the RBTA this weekend, and that's going to be an adventure in itself. One I'm definitely not looking forward to, but I've put it off long enough.

So far I've kept this tank shrimp and crab free, and have been pleased with the results... or I should say that I don't feel like I'm missing anything by not having them in there.

As far as the Interceptor goes, it would kill any shrimp or crabs in your system that happen to be left in the tank when you dose it. When you do tear everything down, I would perform a large water change after you get everything put back together, and run fresh carbon.

For kicks... lets run down this last month, and how great it's been.

- A bazillion flatworms arrived. Seriously red rocks are cool.
- Bubble algae... don't worry... it's red though, because flatworms cover the bubbles.
- I've lost 72 wrasses because my Mystery Wrasse has a serious attitude problem, and no respect for my wallet.
- Redbugs, if my SPS hadn't suffered enough... lets toss these guys in the mix.
- Faulty solenoid... I hear alk swings, along with redbugs is the best way to get your SPS colors to pop.

Since I seem to be just tossing money away, I think I'm just going to start blending up my cash with my fish food. That way I can dose it directly to the tank.

Aw man, i'm sorry about your fish Tswifty. :-(

You're going through a bunch of c**p one right after another, but i gotta say, this is a quote waiting for a sig:
"Bubble algae... don't worry... it's red though, because flatworms cover the bubbles."

man, that is harsh about your Picasso...I can't imagine. Any deductions as to what could have happened? Sorry to hear

I have had a horrid month, 4 fish dead, pumped in enough kalk to my tank to make a vanilla milkshake. It literally made an SPS have a blister(never seen that before!!!). It had a bubble with the polyps still attached to the end of the bubble, but the tissue was completely off the coral. Strangest thing I have ever seen. It looks to have reattached to the coral, but a couple polyps died( I think) Will be monitoring over the weeks to come. Probably will now start a slow death.

I will start fresh with a tank tear in August, to extract super pistols.

...must be something in the water.

Thanks guys. Hopefully we will all have a better August. Anyway, I have no idea why it jumped since it's been in the tank for like 5 months. I did get an in-stock notification on a fish I have been searching for this morning. So I may cheer myself up by ordering it... we'll see.

hey TJ,

How much you know about salinity? I have noticed that the area of the ocean I live on(Caribbean Reef) has a much higher salinity then what they usually say, It usually comes in at 37-39ish and when I keep my tank at this, my corals seem much happier.

It's true certain areas have higher salt levels than others. There was a thread a while back that I believe even included a map and the salt concentration for different regions. As far as if it is better or worse... or long term effects from running at higher concentrations...? beats me?

Personally, I try and run my SG between 1.026-1.027, but as you can see from my chart it's rather difficult to keep. Which I attribute to skimming wet.

RBTA is out!

...and I didn't topple all my rockwork, or cause serious chaos in the tank! I'll post pics later tonight.

This is an awesome aquarium, I love your setup and the livestock seems to enjoy it too!

Just out of curiousity... I spotted a tang in one of your pictures. Do you still have him? I'm far from being the "tang police" and was actually curious to know if you think a system like yours is too small to house a small sized tang. LMK Bro!
