My purple chased my yellow around untill it died That took about two weeks. They were about the same size. All added at the same time.

My advice would be to just keep the purple, no more.
If you want fish that are colorful and swim around alot in the open....... Get anthias. Awsome fish, and better suited to aquaria IMO.

As you can tell from the postings it is somewhat of a crapshoot. I have not had good luck mixing the species. PT's are very aggressive. Some people have not experienced problems.

If you decide to try this, I would recommend a smaller PT with the other species of choice and put them in at the same time.

Good Luck

I am not sure if I would even want to do this but do you guys think it would help if I added 2-3 yellow tangs and only 1 PT or would it not make a difference?

Now thats what I'm talking about. I would really like to have something like that. I think tangs are the best fish around and having a mix of them in the same tank is simply awesome.

Thanks for sharing.

And keep them coming guys.

Just keep in mind, it's not all fun and games with multiple tangs. First, you need a BIG tank, with a lot of swimming room, but also rockwork that provides some serparation and hiding places.

The achilles rules my tank. He never looked twice at the yellow, but used to hound the purple if he left one end of the tank. That is, until I added the PBT. Since then, the achilles hasn't looked twice at the purple, but still chases the PBT occasionally. Fortunately, they're equal swimmers (both being acanthurus tangs), so it's just a quick dart across the tank. The aggression lessened dramatically after the first few weeks, but you still see it every once in a while. No one has ever been hurt by it, either.

I suspect the aggression will be transferred again when I add the next batch of fish.

Did you ever have a problem with the yellow and purple tangs?

Nope, never, but there were bought and QT'd together. Buying/adding together in groups is a great way to avoid aggression.

My tang stock is:
3x yellow tang
red sea sailfin
purple tang
powder blue tang
blond naso
vlamingii

I got the yellows and sailfin together and added the blond naso a few weeks later. The powder blue and purple tang were QT and added together without major problem. The vlamingii was the last add. Before each additional new fish added, I rearranged most of the live rock landscape so there was no established territory. Also, my live rock is elevated on PVC which leaves extra swimming room which they take full advantage of. Lots of hiding places and sleeping places seem key for my group.
