i had the exact same problem with the same grape/fan algea. My filter in my ro/di went bad and i wasn't testing for phosphates. my tds got up to around 200 and that stuff went crazy. i took one medium sized piece and put it in my fuge and spent about 2hrs cutting and pulling the rest out and getting rid of it. i have since ordered new filters and a salfiert phosphat test. i recommend you rip as much of that as you can get to out and be done with it. if you have this stuff in your display and have a nitrate/phosphate spike and don't attend to it in 2weeks or more there is no stopping this stuff.
Also since you have TBS rock and your tank is new make sure you take your time and get all the bad critters out of the display. i had 4 gorilla crabs that reeked havoc in my tank until i finally got them out into the fuge.

sorry, did'nt get far enough in the thread to see that you already ripped it out before i posted. looks 110% better already. just one more thing if your running ro/di on well water with low psi(no booster pump)make sure to check your tds frequently. it only took me 2 15% water changes with higher than 0 tds for that stuff to go crazy. good luck!!!

I changed out 50% of the water yesterday and brought my Nitrates down to 20ppm everything else is 0ppm. I also removed more plant growth and blew off the rock's extensively. I am wondering if my skimmer is not working right would that bring up your nitrates? My skimmer only produces small amount of skim. I cleaned it 2 week's ago and it has only produced 1/2" in the collection cup and 1/2" in the overflow cup. should I be cleaning this every week no matter what it produces and should it be producing more skim?

My nitrates were high till i removed all the bio balls and all filter pads, left only a 100 micro filter sock, and skimmer, with my heavy duty sand bed and refugium.
