I think we have taken this Thread out of context, being the fact that this in my part is better than Tap water or Filtered Tap water. As this is not a Long Term Solution, it does help when one has a small tank like a Nano. (which many have deemed as popular) While it may contain elements that are unwanted, its always better than tap water in my opinion. So being Location or Price, " Put it in the Tank or Drink it, U can't beat 2 chooses for the Price of One."

I'd just recommend a store that specializes in filtered water (eg Culligan or the like). There you have more assurance that the water is of higher quality and not hit or miss from a machine where maintenance may be questionable.

I am not sure about where you are at but in Arizona there seems to ba a water store on every other corner and a freestanding dispenser on the other corners and in every supermarket. If I have to buy water for any reason I choose a Water & Ice store so I can talk to the owner and have then test the water in my presence. Most of them are proud of the quality and will be glad to test it for you. There is still nothing like owning you own RO or RO/DI unit though, you have 100% control over the quality it puts out. For me it was an easy decision since we drink RO water like crazy and use it for the icemaker too, the wife didn't bat an eye when I wanted to purchase it. We freeze bottles half full and top them off and have cold water all day long. Almost as good as homebrew which I also use RO water for brewing.

I get all my RO water from my LFS. I only get about 10 gallons at a time for only a little more than $2, less if I'm buying something else.

I had to go to Walmart today and get some RO water(My RO/DI is @ 50 tds and im buying Kati Ani unit instead of replacing filters)
I took a good look at the machine. It is a Culligan machine. It has sediment filter, carbon filter, reverse osmosis membrane and uv sterilization. It appears they have a checkoff sheet that the check all paramaters and change filters as neccessary in 14 day increments. TDS reads 5 today. It's my best option for now and I have no problem with using walmart water, which i have used alot of over the years. |

allaboutreef,
just curious what is the tds reading from your lfs water? I would not b surprised if walmart's water has a lower tds reading than the lfs. |

Some may call it lazy, but I call it smart. I use my own RO/DI system. I have gotten tired of going to the store over and over again to purchase water.

I've had an RO/DI for years. It's not much fun hauling water from the store, but it's better quality than tap water.
My RO/DI filter needs new filters and I'm tired of buying new filters, and especially wasting rejected water so i decided to buy a rechargeable Kati Ani unit. I'm just waiting for it to arrive....... |

DI alone will never give you the same quality water as an RO/DI will. It takes the whole enchilada to get it right, prefilter, carbon, RO and DI. In my case in Phoenix with a tap TDS over 800 I would blow through DI like crazy and be constantly recharging resin. Not worth it to me.

I'm only doing it because i'm following the advise from professional people (people that do aquaculture fulltime) here in w pa that have beeen doing it for atleast a decade.
If for some reason i do not like it i will just run my ro/di. My tap water tds is 150. |

I know Anthony Calfo promotes DI but it would never be cost or manpower effective in lots of situations besides not producing the same finished water quality.

Welcome to Team RC Rat.
A unit like my Barnstead will produce super high quality water using multistage DI and special organic removal stages. Only problem is that changing the filters runs $475 and when filtering tap it runs through a set in less than two months. With the RO pre-stage it doesn't make any better water but the cartridges last for close to two years before they need replacing. Having an RO do most of the dirty work will save you BIG $$$ over time.
