Monterey is very very nice. It is mostly all cold water displays and critters found more in that area. They only have a small reef section and it is designed for kids. The cold water displays are amazing though and Monterey is a lot of fun. I can't speak for the Waikiki aquarium, although I would love to visit it sometime. It looks great.

Monterey, Carmel, and south to Big Sur is a great place to vacation as couple, especially to drive/eat/beachwalk. In the winter the resorts in Carmel valley, East of Carmel, are usually warmer (T-shirt weather) than the coastal cities, and just a short drive away from the coast. Its been a few years since I visited the aquarium in Monterey, but the big displays are focused on the coastal California marine environment. The diving around Monterey/Carmel does not compare well to Northern California (North of Salt Point) or the Channel islands, IMO. The Channel islands are some of the best cool-water dives I've made.

No t-shirt weather this year, it's cold for us Cali folks. I live right across the bay from MBA and it's about 50 out now.
FWIW I've had 100' vis on numerous occasions here in the MB ![]() ![]()

If you're in the area pm me. I'd be more than happy to point you in the right direction. The waikiki aquarium is great, I get my SW from there through the membership program since it's about 10 minutes away from my house.

The new Steinhart will be cool about 5 years after its open maybe. I was there a number of years ago and it was a nice place but really in need of an update.
Large aquariums take a long time to establish just like our own home tanks. I was very disappointed with the Georgia Aquarium's reef this summer, I want to see it in a few more years when the live corals grow and are actually healthy. I thought the Aquarium of the Pacific in Long Beach Cal. was the best all around public aquarium for me. C
