I just moved to utah from ohio and i would like to say I'm royally upset at the cost of electricity out here. As soon as we build a house we are doing solar panels. its stupid they dont do wind turbines and solar panels out here as it is with all the wind and sun we have!!!

Looks like I used 904 more KWHs and paid almost exactly the same as you did.

Time of use meter rocks!!!!

Southern Ca Edison. Baseline rate .10/kwh + .05/kwh delivery on baseline of 10kwh/day (~300/month). I use more than 5x that amount, and we have "tiered pricing". Average fully delivered rate on a typical bill is over $0.25/kwh. The fully delivered rate on the top tier, or about 40% of my electricity use is over $0.40/kwh.

At the marginal rate, running 1000W of lights over a big tank for 10 hours a day adds $120/month to the bill. (1KW x 10H x 30 day x $0.4)

Makes those LEDs coming down the pike look mighty promising.

Its been like that for years but the rates are increasing yearly. Every reefer will hit over the baseline and pay $0.41 kwh. Thats why lots of people are looking into solar

I don't mean to sound like a jerk, so i hope no takes it that way, but why do so many people choose to live there when the cost of everything is so high? I know some people have no choice on where they live, but for the ones who do why in the world would you choose to pay so much for things the rest of the country(on average) pays much less for? Is it really THAT pretty out there?

(Please nobody think i'm bashing cali, i just enjoy learing about different areas and what they are about)

Yes it is! Unless you have lived in SoCali, you would not understand. There is no place like SoCali. No place!

BTW, I know you said you aren't bashing Cali, but I also noticed you did not update your location either.

One bonus for us though is that we get the best choice of reef livestock. Not only that we ususally pay less than half of what others pay accross the country.

Somtimes I wonder why I live out in Cali but one thing great is the weather. It doesnt rain that much, today its 77 degrees, its not humid during the summer and summer nights are cool. There's no hurricanes, tornadoes. or snow storms. Yes we have earthquakes but it comes once in a while (knocking on wood).

Today at 77 degrees I can go snow skiing (30 minute drive) or head to the beach (35 minute drive, waves were excellent during this past weekend)

Cost of living is high but so is your salary. I do feel sorry for the people who bought homes during the last year or two at its peak. They have $3000-$4000 mortgage payments on a middle class home. Thats not including their $10000 a year property tax

gcarroll- i fixed my location for you lol.

cthetoy - thanks for the answer. I bet the weather is nice. I'm one of those rare people that enjoy lots of snow(especially during the holidays, how do you have christmas in 70 degree weather ) and hate high heat, so i suppose it's a good thing i live in michigan. I am also terrified of sharks so i guess i'm better off im my great lakes

I've got solar. Given the subsidies, its got a nice IRR compared to the top electricity rate tier.

You should come to Denmark, we pay around 70 cents per KWH!! But hey why wouldn't we seing that we ONLY pay 40-60 percent income tax

A few other numbers:

- 2 dollars and 60 cents a gallon on regular unleaded fuel.
- A fairly standard VW passet stationwagen costs about 75-100.000 USD

Well the benefits are free healthcare and free education all around, and you're given 700dollars a month (maximum 7 years duration) while taking a higher education. So it's not all bad.

Gas here is $3/gallon, we have to pay for our own health care, schools, etc. We don't get paid by the man to take higher ed classes.

that said - insulation sucks and heating/ac units are undersized in apt buildings! Last summer (no aquarium yet) I paid $330 for 1 bedroom 850sq ft.!! I cant wait for the 300g aquarium to arrive! (and $500 electric bills for a 1 bedroom!)
