If I dont need a chiller and only plan on running one heater, is the single plug ranco enough?

so basically what it does is if the temperature starts to rise higher than the setting I tell it, it will shut the heater off?

Correct it is just a very reliable thermostat. It turns your heater on and off. The heater internal stat serves as a back up if the ranco were to fail in the on position.

If you look at the johnson it has an additional feature that you can decide what you want to happen if the probe fails. This is a pretty cool feature. So if the probe fails with the ranco it will just leave the heaters off. With the johnson you can tell it to leave the heaters on and you will still be able to have heat via the heaters internal thermostats as long as you use glass heater of course.
