I think there may be a slight tendency to over complicate thing a little on this site. A long time ago, In a land far far away, I started my first salt tank. I had bought a hundred gal off a guy for a good price, what did I know it was my first ever fish tank. because of all the nay sayers I was setting up to do FW. I had CC over an undergravel filter, I was gonna do a chilid tank. A few days in to the cycle with live gold fish, I went to a different LFS where one guy said "It's not as hard as everyone makes it seem." He told me how the salt watter hobby is a sort of "Old boys club." Well I bought a bag of salt, went home removed the gold fish, dumped the salt in the tank, And never looked back. (the few days with gold fish are the only FW EXP I ever had.) Over the course of years I have done a lot that would get me flamed here.
I'm sure you have to. At least now with the internet it is easer for folks who want to learn to do so. I think we should all encourage the new folks. SK8R This is in no way a flame on your post. I just wanted to say there is more than one path to the end of the road. If you have a few grand to set up a new SW tank then great, If not buy what you can and set it up as you go. JMHO Cope

Just how do you do all the chores needed without putting your hands in the tank once in awhile?

Suzi,
Gloves of some sort. Full length up to the upper arm, or smaller ones that aren't as thick and therefore let you still "feel" whatever you're grabbing. Just make sure you don't use gloves that have the powder coating on the inside. (beat you to it sk8r!) |

Well I thought about the soap on the hands thing. I rinse my hands and make sure there is nothing on them. I HATE gloves. I'll take my chances. I do limit it as much as possible for the sake of the critters.

don't pee in your tank---it may be good to do it in the garden but not in your tank--too much ammonia

i got one, not sure what number you are on
"No matter what anyone or any group of people on any website or LFS says, if you ask somewhere else someone or a group of people will tell you the exact opposite, yet both will claim to be right." that has had to be the single biggest problem i had as a beginner over a year ago, one LFS would say one thing, the other LFS another thing, then you guys would say another thing, then another forum board would have a different consensus, etc...etc.... in the end i found out it was best to look for a majority theory on a particular subject and improvise yourself to fit your own needs, budget and ideas people told me peeing in my tank was going to mess it up, not true in my case people tell me you cannot figure your sump/return pump into your total water turnover rate, only powerheads, while another tells me you can ONLY count your sump in turnover rate and cannot count powerheads people told me lots of things, in the end i made up my own mind and combined that with what seems to work for most people, it worked so far |

#? The Lfs told you they quarantine all the fish for you for 4 weeks. So there is no need for you to QT.
