thanks kevin2000
I did test the water that i use which is the r/o water from walfart which came out to be 0 but also since it is drinking water i was told that they may add stuff to it...i am going to be using distilled water from walfart which I was told will be better but not as good as using my own r/o unit which I plan to purchase here shortly. I hardly use flake food but do use pellet (formula 2) and frozen which I do not rinse off. Do you use one of those little strainers to rinse the food off with. I am assuming you use r/o water to rinse off? I dont feed much...I feed frozen about 1/4 of a cube maybe not even that much and then pellet the next day and vice-versa |

Rinse the frozen food it makes a difference . The packing water is loaded with nutrients, When you do strain it of you'll be surpried at what the water looks like.
I put a porton of food(no more than 2 days worth) in a plastic coffee can filled with chlorinated tap water and let it thaw. I then pour it all through a brine shrimp net(fine mesh). Dump out the water and dump the thawed food into the can, rinsing it off the net with added ro/di water. Then I add a little garlic and feed with a turkey baster and place any unused food still in the can in the fridge. I use tap water with the chlorine for the rinse to help control any bacteria in the food. In the Nov 2006 issue of coral magazine,a study was summarized which showed that virtually all frozen fish food products even when continuuosly frozen carried vibrio bacteria which can be harmful to fish and recommended a rinse with tap water just like you do with your own food. I also feed flake (Ocean nutrieion Prrme Reef) and Spirulina every day but sparingly. There are lots of vitamins and variety in flake you just don't get in frozen unless it's laced with flake contents.
